NY dope thread because why not

I totally glamorized the entire thing. All my musical idols were junkies, I heard stories about the NYC heroin scene, etc.. It was all just so enticing.
Hah, yeah man.. unfortunately when I was a kid I took that to heart. I was obsessed with the junkie rockstar bullshit... then I finally became one minus the rockstar part.. :\ Hah. But, I'll tell you... my music has gotten 10x better since I got sober. I mean, I'm grateful for the inspiration for the songs and shit but I mean as far as my ability to play it well, sing it well, and put on a good show... being sober beats being strung out by a landslide.

(read my blog about me face planting during a show for more info on playing high) Hah.
I'm the same way man, I saw the movie "The Doors" and i just wanted to do everything Jim Morrison was doing. I don't think anyone under 14 should watch that movie. Lol, I'm also a musician(more a producer), and i think when i'm on the junk, I'm more patient and i work longer on my tracks. I think i suffer from ADD when i'm sober, Cause i start something and quickly move onto something else, So sometimes i just want to make music while high.

No Junk

No funk
I gotta remember that one. The drummer that said if you want to be great you gotta do heroin was Gar Samulson(rip) the original drummer for megadeth. I always wanted to learn guitar and didn't start till after I quit the junk. I guess that's why I have no funk.

It's just not tolerated in the music industry and by fans these days... I mean, back in the 60's, 70's, 80's and early-mid 90's... it was like expected for rockstars to be junkies, trash hotel rooms, bang strippers, etc... Now the bands out there are just total squares, hah. I guess people started seeing the end result of all that partying... a lot of dead musicians and ruined careers, and realized it was just fucking dumb.. Now if you want to be a successful artist, you need to get up early, play your shows/record sober, and have your shit at least semi together. The record labels and the fans just have no patience for junkie rockers anymore. That shit died after the grunge era did.

If I am paying over 40$ for a ticket I want the artist to put on a good show. I have seen bands play better shows when they are wasted. The music might not be spot on but you can just tell they are having a blast and that makes the audiance have fun and I think the band feeds off that. I at least like to feel like I got my money's worth you know what I mean?

Depends just how blasted they are... Hah. I saw Stone Temple Pilots after they got back together and Weiland was supposedly "sober".. He couldn't remember the fucking lyrics, stumbled and fell into the drum set, he was a mess. The show got cut short too.. it was a disaster.

Sometimes, yeah it's fun for them to be a little fucked up I guess, but when your seeing a band you really like who has a huge fan base and a duty to perform well, it's annoying when they are too fucked up.

I even don't like it when I go to local clubs around me and see live music from nobodies.. if they are fucked up and playing like shit, I'm going to walk the hell out and certainly not throw any money in their tip jar.

If they are falling down and forgetting lyrics that is bad. When my friends band would play we would all get hammered but they seemed to get better the more they drank. I'm sure there is a fine line between good drunk musician and sloppy drunk musician. Lol

It's a lot harder for a whole band to play together wasted than to play an acoustic set by yourself wasted....

That's true.. but, if you're playing by yourself, just you an an acoustic guitar... it's way more noticeable. Hah, there's no hiding there. Not behind any other band members or instruments in the background.. if you fuck up, hit a bad note or forget a part of the song, etc. you don't have a band mate that can kind of pick up the slack until you recover... When it's just you, you totally rise and fall on your own so if you're fucked up, everyone knows it.

There's some drummers that have trouble making adjustments to the rhythm of everyone else if shit starts to get away from you...If there's four people, 2 guitarists(one singing), a bassist and a drummer and everybodys fucked up, oh boy! I hate trying to sing through a sketchy tempo....

By myself, drunk or high on H, I can kind of just sink into the song hear myself through the PA or whatever, it's just easier and less to worry about...

There's not as many drummers who are straight alcoholic druggies I find, they're more about just playing the music, after a certain point if I'm getting high, I just lose my desire to really work on anything....It sucks....A year or so ago when I quit, I really through myself into playing and I was just really feeling it, I just dropped off since then...anything except weed will destroy you as a musician eventually, I believe...

Yeah man.. that's how it works. I would always say when I was using, "man, I'm going to wake up tomorrow.. get high and work on my music!" Whomp...hah, that never fucking happened.. and even if it did, I would half ass it.

I was in a position of almost getting signed a few years back to a mid sized indie label in NYC... fucked the entire thing up because I was just too lazy to work because I was so strung out. Heroin came first.. over everything.. and if you want to make it as a musician and be any good whatsoever... it needs to be your priority.

People always equate drugs and music to go hand in hand.. and I guess they do in a lot of ways. But, as much as the drugs can fuel creativity at times... they can and normally do, kill it entirely. If not your creativity than certainly your passion.

^Very true, especially if you don't really have a name yet! You have to be on point and actively trying to promote yourself and get gigs, which is always the side of it I hate....You can't just half-ass it....It's not even about "how good you are" a lot of the time, it's just promotion....I've seen bands that were nothing special make it pretty far just on pushing themselves! Of course, in the end, to draw people to shows, it takes some talent....

Yeah man. Promotion is the key... in this day and age with home studios, itunes, amazon, etc... there are a shit load more bands out there. There is lots of competition and if you're not actively hustling... you can't expect shit to just fall into your lap. You need to be constantly building your fan base, hyping your shows, doing whatever the fuck it takes.

I know exactly what you mean, BlueHues. I'm a drummer as well, and I also play guitar. Having a habit has really diminished my passion and motivation to play music. I feel like if I didn't have to work a full time job that I'd be able to focus on music without any problems, but when I get out of work and start getting high, that's all I'm doing for the rest of the evening. My life is work & dope. Nothing else.

That's interesting to see you guys say that. I mean I'm no musician but, I've always thought that drug culture and music blended together well. I probably have more music done by artists that used than not but, a good portion of the greats died from drug use as well. I think if you're talking about heroin use in particular that it's influence on music is undeniable whether good or bad.

It does go hand and hand to some extent, and it does SOMETIMES help you play depending on the situation, but it just takes up so much priority in your life, you stop caring and slack, and being a touring musician for a label is a major commitment!

Plus, you have to practice and be at shows on time etc etc....Unless you're a millionaire signed to a major label who can get some "errand boy" or your manager to go cop for you, it can fuck everything up fast! Plus, your bandmates will only tolerate so much of it before they tell you to fuck yourself!

A lot of famous musicians get into it after they're established and have money and are signed and booked and all that good shit....Trying to make it as a musician while your unknown, poor and strung out aint easy!

Ya true. It has the same effect on everyone. I remember last summer a member of a well known band (who's name escapes me) was playing with the band at a very popular place in the southern part of ma. This is a big outdoor venue and is one of maybe three places in the state where huge names perform. Anyways this band member ended up taking a cab to a nearby cvs and then tried to rob the place for opioids. Weird to me that someone performing for thousands, who had videos on mtv and was in what I think was an international tour at the time. Just goes to show i guess.

I read in Scar Tissue, an autobiography by the lead singer of RHCP, that Kurt Cobain could go out on stage right after shooting up heroin and do great. While Anthony Kiedis would go on stage high and make a complete fool of himself.

Ironic that Kurt's the dead one and Anthony is still alive when Kurt's the one who seemed to have a better handle on his addiction

That's a great book by the way. I bought it to read on a plane ride but once I started I couldn't put it down.
