I renewed my script for nuvigil 50mg today. I take 2. Is there a recreational effect from taking much more than that? Does anyone else take it? It's a one-off (or two-off as it's my second script) as it's expensive and on a private GP script.

I like it for a mild speed buzz, but I've never taken over 100Mg. People that actually do speed much at all to party think it's pretty weak.
 
No recreational effects even at high doses. Maybe a slight mood lift, but this will eventually be followed with some nasty irritability at the tail end.
 
Thank you for your replies. I only took 100mg and getting some bad stomach pain each time I take it. Has anyone else experienced this? Happens every time. Not sure if it's a stimulant thing or something else but I do have a diseased gallbladder and gall stones.

Thank you for letting me know. I asked for it for chronic fatigue syndrome but it turns out I have sleep apnea from a sleep study I had done recently so my GP wants me to try a CPAP machine rather than more nuvigil so it will be the last script from him.

how well did it work for you?
People have suggested I try this as a replacement for caffeine whenever I need additional energy to overcome an unexpected last-minute workload.

Better than caffeine. Nothing like real speed.
I've been prescribed it for sleep apnea myself. My apnea is controlled now, but I find the Modafinil (same drug as Nuvigil but shorter lasting) handy for times I need to stay up late, need extra focus for a project, things like that. It feels like you would get sick if you tried to really get a speed high from it.

In between caffeine and real speed. Prolly closer to caffeine. Much longer lasting.

When you used it, were you using caffeine as well?
Personally, I’m only planning to try modafinil once I’ve been off caffeine for at least a month and will definitely be avoiding co-administration of caffeine and related xanthines with modafinil. i’ve read, caffeine, can have some nasty interactions. with modafinil, especially severe anxiety whilst also decreasing its effectiveness.
Am I right in thinking that modafinil would be best as an occasional stimulant?

Yes, I’m sure tolerance can develop with modafinil, especially to the dopaminergic effects, which are very weak for modafinil. I personally believe that it is this dopaminergic affect which often makes healthy people subconsciously believe that modafinil is extremely helpful to their cognition, when in fact, it is just boosting their motivation.
I think the main issue with daily modafinil use is that one probably begins to lose out on much-needed rest/recovery. i’ve heard some people saying that modafinil doesn’t interfere with sleep, but frankly, I don’t believe that.

Didn't quit caffeine but did caffeine in the morning and Modafinil in the evening,
Used it a few days in a row while getting my apnea in line once. 98% of the time, it has been for one day.
It's prescribed for wakefullness. So, yeah, taken too close to bedtime will keep you awake. It's generally what I'm using it for.
I like it for it's mildness. I'm an older guy. I can take a couple of my GF's Ritalin if I want to stay up and party, but I'll pay for it the next day. Not so much with Modafinil.
Generally use it just to stay up late or get something done.

Thank you for your reply. Do you control your apnea with a CPAP machine? I need one but waiting on an appointment with the sleep clinic in the new year plus the expense of a machine is going to hurt.
 
I actually just got my doctor to prescribe me one week's worth of Modafinil just to try it out, and honestly, even though I've only taken it twice (both yesterday and the day before) it does ALMOST nothing for me!

Like, I can barely even tell I'm on it. It doesn't even really wake me up much. All it seems to do is make it so I can't fall back to sleep, but once I get up if I have slept badly then I still feel like shit. I barely even feel anything when it kicks in, just like the mildest sensation of barely waking up at all. Honestly, caffeine is MUCH more noticeable and stronger for me. I can tell I'm on it more when i mix it with caffeine, which I was trying to quit before. Now I only drink tea rather than coffee which I am finding produces less anxiety than coffee. I can tell when I mix it with caffeine that the caffeine potentiates it a bit, but it is weak as hell.

I already knew it wasn't recreational and would feel mild, but it's SOO much milder than I imagined.

Anyone have any guess as to why this drug feels like it doesn't work for me?

Yeah, I use a CPAP. Took me a while to get used to it, but now I love it.
Do you have insurance? My insurance had me pay monthly rent for the CPAP and then they paid it off after 3-4 months.
Often, you can solve apnea by not sleeping on your back. You can not sleep on your back by sewing a tennis ball into the back of a t-shirt. You don't roll onto your back then. :)

I wonder if you don't feel it because you're quitting caffeine. Ya know, TBH, it's not a ton stronger than caffeine for me (I like caffeine). It does last a whole lot longer and does keep me awake better. I can sleep 1-2 hours after a big cup of coffee, and I only drink it in the morning.

Thank you for letting me know. I am in Australia so the insurance thing is a little different and I can't get the cost covered by the government as far as I know as I'm not "bad" enough. BUT I had 30 apneas an hour in REM sleep and my GP said that's a lot so I need one. The specialist said having them more in REM sleep could indicate narcolepsy also which is something I've felt I've had.

About the sleeping position - I always go to sleep on my side and can never sleep on my back if I'm aware. The sleep study says the time spent in supine position was 17.27%. Thank you for letting me know though.
 
I wake at around 3am every morning and can never get back to sleep no matter what I do in the day. Do you think that's sleep apnea waking me?

I'm not sure exactly as it's over my head but there was a guideline thing I found online for the governement website. From what the specialist said it goes by how low your oxygen levels get and mine only went to 86% and the cut off for moderate is 87% but I didn't ask about the number of apneas as I didn't know enough about the condition to ask him. My GP said the 30 an hour was a lot but that was only in REM sleep and when it averaged out with deep sleep it didn't average as many. I don't really get it but the specialist did say that I wouldn't qualify for the government free CPAP machine so I will have to buy one.
