A snifter of death: Now drug peddlers are smuggling killer methamphetamine in liquid form in bottles of COGNAC and shampoo
A would-be drug smuggler was forced to come clean after attempting to board a plane with a shampoo bottle full of liquid methamphetamine.
Australian Customs officers at Melbourne Airport seized almost two-and-a-half litres the deadly drug concealed inside one shampoo and two cognac bottles on Thursday night.
The three bottles were uncovered in the luggage of a 21-year-old Hong Kong man after officers noticed the liquid inside a shampoo bottle in his luggage was actually methamphetamine.
Further examinations revealed the two bottles of cognac in his luggage contained the same substance as the shampoo bottle.
Further forensic testing will be undertaken to determine the exact weight and purity of the substance.
Victorian Customs Commander Don Smith said the discovery demonstrates the determination of the Customs officers at thwarting attempts to smuggle drugs into Australia.
'Methamphetamine is a scourge which destroys lives and tears apart families and our officers are doing everything possible to ensure it never reaches our streets,' Mr Smith said.
'Every seizure counts. Every arrest counts. Today, because of this detection, our community is a little bit safer.'
The man has been referred to the Australian Federal Police for further investigation.
