So I've been on fentanyl patch for a year, but I've been eating it. I eat half of a 16.8mg / 100mcg/h (so about 8.4mg give or take) patch a day, sometimes more. I could easily eat the whole patch, but I try to stretch it out to get to the whole 30 days, which never happens, I run at least 1 week short every month. I get really sick really fast when I run out. I always try to replace the patch by IV'ing heroin, but it's a poor substitute. I feel like no mater how much I do its never enough to get me feeling right.

I started on the patch after about 5 failed years of a slowly escalating morphine dose. In the end I was on 600 mg of morphine a day, 3 200mg pills a day. It was very hard switching to the fentanyl, I was sick for like a month.

So I don't know if I should give my whole history here or what, but just in case I will, if you don't think you want to read it, then help me with some suggestions on what can replace my fentanyl. The heroin is a very poor substitute, and i couldn't afford the amount that it would take to get me feeling better, maybe it's just really shitty stuff around here, idk.

But here goes with a little history, I was a heroin addict for many years, I was in a car accident and a fall while I was using and messed up discs and nerves in my back, but it didn't really bother me while I was a young homeless drug addict.
I got clean for many years, then noticed I was in a lot of pain from my back, I had to stop working, and was soon forced to get onto disability. Then I started pain management. For about a year I was on 5mg - 10mg oxys, I never took more than I was supposed to, never refilled early, but it definitely didn't help. So I was refereed to a different doc and was started on morphine, for 5-7 years I was a slowly increasing dose of morphine, started at 30mg a day, and ended at 600mg a day, not counting the breakthrough pain meds, which have always been either 15 or 30mg oxycodone.
After about a year on 600mg we decided it wasn't working and the doctor suggested the fentanyl patch. I switched over to it. Soon after I stopped wearing it and started eating it.

Now I'm in the boat in in now. What is a good replacement for fentanyl, for when I run out? Once I finally do get my fentanyl back I always feel like it's not enough, the first week or so i eat way too much, like almost like I have to build it back up in my system or something, idk. But it's kinda like crack, where you just want more and more of it.

Oh also I've got millions of empty patches that I already stuck in my mouth, I get nothing out of them if I put them back in my mouth, but is there anything left in them? Any way to get anything out of them? I doubt it.

Fentanyl is a bitch to beat. I had a nasty IV habit and to this day, 8 years later, my tolerance level for opiates is so high. I can honestly say that I don't think there is anything that can replace it... it's pretty much IT in my eyes. I hope you can get yourself off of them, best of luck to you!

Man fentanyl is a bitch I was introduced to fentanyl laced heroin an I loved it but then my dude started getting regular stuff an now my tolerance is so high I can't get anything off of regular stuff I'd suggest that u try an score some waaaayyy better dope or eat more fentanyl patches or inject it jus sayin man good luck I read ur story an that sucks man best of wishes!

Fentanyl is the the only opiate left besides giant oxy or dilaudid habits that I would recommend methadone maintenance. I was on a pump for a few days and it sent me into a huge addiction. I read that one use of fentanyl can alter one's response to opiates for 6 months and the chances for someone becoming dependent increase by a good margin. Getting on methadone could give you the stability that I assume is missing and wanted. Running out for a week every month on fent must be hell.

I know it's been like a month since I replied to this thread but I'm back in the same boat and desperate again. I actually bought some methadone last month but burnt through it. Thanks for the help everyone, you're awesome!

One of the worst parts is knowing you're running out of patches and trying to stretch out the little you have for days, dragging out that horrible sickness for days and days longer, instead of probably just feeling great for three days, you feel bad for a week, but not totally like you know you will when they're all totally gone. I don't know what's worse.

How can I inject a fentanyl patch that is like a piece of scotch tape?

I wouldn´t do that. Fentanyl is too strong and those patches are meant to last 3 days. You can easily die doing this.
I had to use Fentanyl for a long time after my surgery and despite of being super strong, you would get a better rush out of other opiates.
When it comes to Fentanyl I´d say that even Heroin is better and safer.

So glad i got off of fent! Now i am on oxycodone 15mg. I love it

Congratulations and welcome to BL!!
If you are on 15 mg, it´s not difficult to quit now. Or cut the physical dependence if that´s the case.
Good luck!

Welcome!
It seems you have a super high tolerance. It´s gonna be tricky to quit that. And it gets worse with time.
Although I would hardly recommend methadone, in your case I think you could weigh the cost/benefit.
If you want to stop, try to find a dose of methadone that will get you settled. And after that quit it as soon as you can.
Be careful, fentanyl is very strong and can do a lot of damage in terms of addiction.
Good luck!

Hi all, new guy here....

Just had to reply here because I'm in a similar situation. Although I am a little more disciplined as far as it lasting, I usually end up a day or so short at the end of the month. I am on the 75mcg dose patches (due to 5 herniated discs-3 severely) and have been for about 3 years now. Worked my way up from original 25mcg dose about 8 years ago. I am actually prescribed 15 patches a month, due to me still working a physically demanding job, my excessive overheating/sweating makes the patches virtually worthless after 48 hours. About a year and a half ago, when my Dr. said he would not increase my dose past it's current level, I started experimenting with ingesting the gel orally, a little bit at a time. I squeeze a drop out every few hours (and usually snort one or two of the 4 10mg. Oxycodone I get a day for breakthrough pain), but I usually have something "happen" where I will be in more pain than normal, and use this excuse to justify taking another patch early. I then spend the rest of the month telling myself I will "make it up", but I never seem to manage it.

One thing that has kept my problem from getting worse than it is, is having my wife keep my meds in her own safe, and just give them when they are due. Only I am very persuasive when I really want to be, and sometimes talk her into giving me one early. I then end up trying to get through the last day or so until refill with just 4 or so Oxys a day. Needless to say doesn't work so well.

So maybe you have a close friend/family member you can ask for help like I do. Hope it helps, but if not at least know you're not alone in you pain, literally. matter of fact starting in a few hours my life is gonna be hell until Tuesday.....:(
