Hi. I need an easily available np solvent for a codeine extraction. Please do not list dcm, chloroform or toluene as these are hard to obtain (I am trying for the future but I need one NOW). Would butane work? Thanks for reading this.

If you cannot use chloroform, just stick with doing a CWE.

I don't mean any offense, but doing an extraction with these types of solvents can be very dangerous, especially if you don't have a solid foundation in Chemistry and good laboratory technique (not to mention adequate supplies and equipment.)

Caseface, I know I can't iv codeine! That'd be dangerous. And to dokomo, I know quite a bit of chemistry, I also have a lot of equipment (everything necissary) but the solvent, I only have cyclohexane, which I'm not sure of. I don't want to waste solvent or codeine. Specifically I want DHC, but the solubilities are similar (sort of) and most solvents that work for codeine work for all morphine related opiates. I would explain furthur what I need it for but I'll say that heroin is expensive and leave it at that. You will figure out the rest ; )

Cyclohexane is nonpolar enough. I would recover as much as you can though, that's not really a cheapo solvent.

If you didn't know that, you should reconsider what you're doing...

I used cyclohexane before and for some reason it didn't work very well (It worked though). I always recycle but I'm not using cyclohexane again. It was a waste of time and a waste of a small amount of cyclohexane. I had MUCH better results with chloroform but chloroform is expensive, hard to obtain and hard to work with due to it's volatility (mask or fume hood required). Cyclohexane gave results similar to ether (back when it was much more easily available) and I want a cheap and available solvent and can't think of any. I know the theory behind this and try to understand anything before I attempt it! For some reason though, many things which SHOULD work in theory, DONT work practically. That sucks, but it's science in general.

Ea but the toluene I can get only has 60% toluene and a shitload of gel. Same with the dcm only it doesn't say that on the label so now I need to fucking distill it.

i need to no what an np solvent is, i no its nonpolor but what is it used for u guys call some xylene but not here so could i get away with using a paint stripper? i'm told to use a np solvent of my choice. plz help

A real easy to find non-polar solvent is butane. Now, some of the stores don't have high purity butane but if you go to a cigar shop and ask for the 5x filtered it should work. The 5x has 0 impurities, so when it evaps off u only have good product.

thats great n thx but any idea if i can use paint stripper? is tht a non polor solvent? its not for making ash oil.

Paint stripper?

Theres so many different kinds out there man. A common one, Dichloromethane, is a non polar solvent but you wanna be sure of the purity.

Same goes for another common paint stripper, Nitromethane but that one is highly polar so no go. Dimethyl sulfoxide is the only other stripper solvent I can think of off the top, but again its polar so useless here.

Why do you insist on paint strippers? I guarantee that butane is cheaper, easier to find, and most of the time more pure. Ronson butane isn't a good bet, but there's plenty others.

Butane is a gas at STP and is totally useless for doing anything but hash oil extractions.

Paint stripper can be anything from DCM to acetone to naptha to xylene... just go find some xylene/toluene/vm&p naptha...

yh cant find any of them been told to use xylene or toluene but no joy, but was told to use an np solvent of my choice thts why i ask, what im askin is if i just went with a paint stripper would tht be a good enough sub for xylene? and i dont insist on p/stripper just somthing thts the same as xylene etc....

what exactly is xylene/ toluene? what is it used for?

Hi jabace123,

Here is a link for an article on erowid called OTC Solvents FAQ
http://www.erowid.org/psychoactives/faqs/faq_otc_solvents.shtml

Your best bet for a good codeine extraction is making chloroform and next best would be getting DMC (with alcohol if you must then mixing in water to separate into layers and collecting DMC).

edit:

Read the link and it has some examples of industry usage.
Toluene uses: furniture refinisher, liquid sandpaper, paint remover
Xylene uses: some cleaners (e.g. for dissolving chewing gum), some lighter fluids
