Ok, I've just about had it with this. Wtf is nodding? Why am I always hearing about people nodding, even off of one vicodin?

I have never experienced this 'nodding' phenomenon and I've done my fair share of opiates. When I'm high on hydrocodone, morhine, whatever, I get active. I wake up. I DEFINITELY can't sleep, much less 'nod'.

Just so anybody reading this knows, I have done high does of morphine, hydrocodone, tramadol, and codeine. When I'm fucked out of my gourd with euphoria for 8-12 hours, I consider that a high dose. So, yes I've done enough to supposedly elicit this 'nod' but never have I felt one.

So WHAT is this 'nodding' thing, and why haven't I ever experienced it?

Hmm.. kind of a tough question....

What is nodding? Well the best I can describe it is a blissful semi-wakefullness. You only have to observe someone in the state to see why it's called nodding. You drift in and out of reality, alternating between fully consciousness and a dream state. When I'm nodding I don't really sleep, and I'm not awake, I'm inbetween.

In my experience he nod generally comes later; hours after dosing.

To clarify a bit, I'm an IV heroin user. For most dopeheads I know (myself included)....there are only two things in the world... THE RUSH, and THE NOD.....the high inbetween is enjoyable, but exists only as a filler between the two.

The tougher part; why don't you nod? Well shit...I dunno man. For me it's really hard to nod on anything except the most potent opiates...I still nod mind you but it's barely there. So, that may be it, you may just tolerate opiates rather well.

It's also possible that you go on the nod and not notice that you're doing it. Believe it or not, this is rather common.

Opiates usually do one of two things for people. Some people like you get the hyped up active affect from opiates and others get the relaxed, noddy, couch lock high. It matters on what opiates your using, what dose and also just your genetics. Tramadol and codeine will not make someone nod. Morphine will make most nod especially IV but orally, nasally, or rectally it has very low bioavailability. Hydrocodone made me nod when I didnt have much tolerance. Nodding is basically when your in a semi sleep like state where you have no worries, and are in a blissful state. The term came from when you take a shot and you close your eyes and cant keep your head up so you keep slowly nodding your head down and then snap back up and then nod back down.

you're not special in this case. those aforementioned drugs don't make me nod, either. it takes the most powerful opiates for some people to be able to "nod," which that in itself is a fucking ambiguous term. some people have less of an affinity with opiates than others, apparently.

at a low dose i get that everything seems fun stage.....and at higher doeses i get that im going to pass out and the nodd comes on. i take a few somas too and then the fun really begins...hehe

Nodding is when your eyelids get really heavy and you cant really do anything but sit there and close your eyes. This only happens to me when i have taken too much opiates, i am like you where i tend to get hyper. Mixing benzos can increase the nod greatly. (but its dangerous)

Yeah, "nodding" used to happen to me. Now I have to do an insane amount to nod, and that's a once-n-a-while phenomenon.

I nod very rarely on any opiates. Matter of fact, the only times I've really nodded was when I have been exhausted or I have also taken benzodiazepines. This takes into account varying doses, from very little to enough to OD. Some people are just like that. This doesn't mean the high isn't enjoyable or that you haven't taken enough.

Yeah weed can help but I need a lot of oral morphine in my experience, as well as low tolerance, to hit a nod from that. Basically nodding for me is drifting in (awake) and out of consciousness (eyes heavy and closed, mouth open maybe drooling, head falls forward) where when I am out of it I have dreams that may or may not incorporate my surroundings that are usually really weird and usually scary. I'll awake and think "damn I'm fucked up" and dip back out and the same dream may or may not continue. It really is fuckin awesome though, something worth experiencing. High doses of oxy and heroin do it to me real easily.

Based on those descriptions, I can be sure that I've never experienced anything like that. Weird. However, I don't feel like I'm missing anything... I'd rather be doing something and enjoying it when I'm high instead of just vegging out.

I pretty much only get to the nod stage towards the end of my dose on oxy. For me it seems like the first 3 or 4 hours is a decent body buzz and a little boost of energy even, but after that I just hit a brick wall and its hard to even keep my eyes open after that.

It took me a long time to start nodding. Technically nodding is just the act of sitting down and having your head nod forward because you are so high you temporarily slip out of consciousness and fall forward slightly. You slip in and out of consciousness in a waking dream state. Once you get used to it, it is pleasant and very relaxing. Many people consider it to be a nice escape. I think it's just a way to enhance life in general especially at night when you don't have anything better to do. I recommend you take a high dose of opiates while you are already tired. Opiates + benzos + hash seems to make me nod easily. But I wouldn't recommend that combo for the sake of harm reduction. Opiates + hash maybe, but if you're going to take benzos with opiates, do a small amount.
Staying awake and high is also very enjoyable to me. I like to try to have the best of both worlds sometimes. I find that if I stay up really late I will nod even off small amounts of opiates. Nodding for me was an acquired thing. Before I used to just pass out, now I nod.

I'm with you, mal, personally nodding has its time and place but for me I like to go out to non-nod-conducive environments when I use opiates.

ive nodded many a time on tramadol and can remember nodding on codeine way back. ive been prescribed tramadol for around the last year-year and a half and have gotten many nods of it, but mainly in higher doses and normally after ive smoked some bud or taken a benzo or even a few alcoholic drinks.

i know a lot of people bag out tramadol, but imma stick up for it. its been nothing but a blessing for me, and many great nights with me and my mate chillin on it gettin messy with other shit involved as well.

i go see my pain specialist/management doctor next week so hopefully move up to a better opie :)

^ Ohhh yeah, tramadol. How could I forget? Yes, 4 hours or so after ingestion that drug will sometimes make me nod. I especially nod from the combo of tramadol + benzos. The interesting thing is that in my personal experience M1 never made me nod, so I don't know what metabolite is responsible for making you nod, but I don't think it's just O-desmethyl-tramadol (M1).

Well I found out last week aftre several experiences with opiates/opiods ... takes a while that's when you know it's time for a break IMO.

Nodding is simply drifting off to sleep momentarily or maybe not so momentarily. It's great but a true warning sign that because it's great ... it could be too good ;)

So have a nod then back the fuck off ... really %)

I don't know what you mean by that at all, unless you're just being sarcastic. I've already said I've never experienced this 'nod', and I've even tried by just kicking back and closing my eyes. Nothing happens at all except then I experience my high in the dark.

The whole idea of drifting off to sleep during an opiate high, to me, is completely out of the question. When I've taken a high dose of any opiate, I cannot sleep at all until the buzz is completely gone. Even then it can take me 2 or 3 hours of lying in bed before I drift off. I can be dead tired to the bone after a long high and still not be able to sleep. I just can't understand how anyone can sleep when high on opiates. Again, maybe its just my individual chemistry, but for me, opiats+sleep=not possible.

man i remember the days of noddin off of 1 7.5/750 vicodin.... i think its the best feeling in the world...
when i nod i usually just close my eyes cause i cant keep em open...i'm still semi-awake but the state of mind i'm in i just have my eyes closed and all i think about is how good i feel..its a very wierd and pleasurable state

oh and when i nod i remember to "wake" myself up so i dont really fall completely asleep
its very hard to describe

nodding for me, is when i keep dozing off but never fall asleep. then an hour later i start to wake up again when the drug is wearing off. its just about the most relaxing thing i could think of. whenever i am really tense or stressed out i always think about how damn relaxing some oxy would be at that moment. i never have any though...

actually nodding in a jacuzzi(sp?) is the most relaxing thing i can think of, but kind of dangerous.
