the air has cooled this evening
clouds roll as the thunder chuckles
a cruel tease to the dying grass,
but tonight there will be no rain

soil once packed hard as clay
cracked and dry beneath the sun
has been turned and tried and readied for life,

so silently seeds were planted
with so much love and so much care
and only now i see what could be growing,

you should have come here with me
deep roots of foolish stubbornness
need new green stalks grown in their way,

now the still rough stone of my actions
sleeps beside me in your place
and i wish cold water would cool my tears,
