Nitrous oxide use led to spine injury, man's lawyer says
SACRAMENTO -- On Halloween night 2010, Jason Starn had just returned home from a head shop in Modesto after buying more nitrous oxide "laughing gas" canisters when "my brain kind of froze." Starn later told his lawyer he had lost all feeling from the rib cage down.

His wife took him to the hospital, where doctors kept him two weeks and determined he had suffered a degeneration of his spinal cord related to his abuse of nitrous oxide, his lawyer said. The numbness lasted months, according to the lawyer, and Starn needs a walker to get around.

In an unusual lawsuit on file in Sacramento Superior Court, Starn is going after the three stores where he bought the drug, in the form of little gas chargers that go by the brand name Whip-it.

^It can cause neurological damage by depleting your B12 levels but that only happens to idiots dumb enough to do very massive amounts.

While I feel bad for this guy he did this to him self it is not in any way shape or form the stores fault. He chose to put this drug into his body and go against its intended purposes. Even if it was being sold as a recreational drug it still would not be the stores fault. It's not like the people that worked at the store put nano bots in the cartridges and cracker which made it get up and force the nitrous into his body.

1st comment on that post

Well now i should sue all the computer stores and other stores selling dust off or can'd air because it gets you hella high and can kill you... y sue a store because you have to abuse things?

This, x 1000. if you inhale so much nitrous you destroy your spinal nerves I have very little sympathy for you.

It doesn't help that the canisters are often sold without adequate labeling. I've done nitrous before and this is the first I hear about this nerve issue.

The only case I read about nerve damage was an erowid report where the guy did tens of thousands over the course of like 5-10 years combined with frequent (read:constant) LSD usage though the LSD wouldn't have anything to do with the nerve damage. The guy mentions being put on gabapentin because the damage is to his nervous system and doesn't mention every thinking he'll every fully recover.

I was referring to the people who go on crazy binges and do several hundred cartridges a day for weeks and even months on end.

Taking B12 supplements or eating foods with high B12 content can help prevent it.

The person that immediately sprang to mind is Merry Prankster.
He has taken more nitrous than anyone else alive, according to what he says, and I believe him after reading his experience report. Very long, but fascinating, and worth the time.
Long story short, he suffered greatly from overdoing nitrous. His pain sounds terrible.

I have done nitrous about 3 times. I would like to try it again, someday, if the situation is right.
But doing it many thousands of times doesn't sound very safe to me, even with B12. I would try to avoid overdoing it, especially after having read about the Merry Prankster's suffering!

He should have saved his legal fees and spent them on B12 and a couple dozen cases of nitrous
