I have noted that nitrous oxide is being brought under legal control. While xenon is considered quite a good substitute., the cost of medical grade xenon is extremely high and the impurities found in other grades makes their use extremely risky. Xenon is often used as a 'shield gas' for welding and is recovered due to it's value. So it's quite common for industrial grades to contain other gases incompatible with life. It's also the case that xenon has a MAC value of 70 i.e. it is capable of inducing general anesthesia without the addition of other medications and thus has the potential to cause serious and even fatal accidents. For the purposes of comparison, the MAC value of nitrous oxide is 104 i.e. it isn't capable of producing surgical anasthesia (although pure nitrous oxide certainly would asphyxiate the user).

Behold, acetylene. It has a MAC value of just 60 but has the unusual advantage of quickly being removed from the human body due to it's physical properties. So while it shares some of the risks of xenon, it is quite a lot cheaper.

I look forward to read reports of bold BLer experimenting with baloons of acetylene. I have seen someone huff on a balloon full of acetylene and at least from my observations, the rapid onset but brief duration match nitrous oxide as did the apparent subjective activity i.e. the person just fell about laughting.

As always, read the MSDS every time, do not experiment alone and just like nitrous oxide, do not expose it to a naked flame.

why is the same not true of acetylene?

I'm not sure dicking around with flammable gases is a safer way to get high than Nitrous, even if it is being brought under control!
