Nitrous Cylinders/Tanks

Does any sort of tank work with nitrous as long as you have the correct regulator? My buddy is a fireman and the department is giving out the oxygen tanks because they're upgrading to newer ones. We're basically going to get a free oxygen tank and we had hoped that we could put a N2O regulator on the tank and re-fill with N2O as needed; those whippit chargers are a little more expensive than we'd like and my roommates and I all like to do a few whippits at our house parties but we typically can go through 40 on a Friday night (as a house of 6 guys :P).

Would putting a nitrous regulator on an oxygen tank work? Or do we have to purchase a tank made specifically for N2O? Likewise, can pure N2O be used in an empty car-racing tank? (I don't mean refilling a tank at a car store because of the sulfur dioxide...)

Thanks for your input, and we are open to new ideas!

I'd guess that you'd want to clean any tank used for automotive nitrous, as i'd imagine there could be some residual sulfur dioxide. Plus, you don't want your N2O tasting of sulfur. As for the oxygen tank.... I'm honestly not sure. I don't how different tanks for various pressurized gases vary, but I'd be very meticulous in figuring this out before attempting to fill it. Definitely don't want a tank to have a structural failure 8o

Also, if you do nitrous even semi-regularly you may want to take a B-12 or B vitamin complex supplement as N2O can cause depletions of said vitamins. And now that i think about it, probably wouldn't hurt to take B vitamins whether or not you're doing nitrous

also, do note that if you have a tanks around.

your going to soon have empty tanks around.

Its called hippie crack for a reason, try not to go too overboard and take vitamins to still be able to feel your limbs when you decide to stop.

You will find it hard to find someone to refill an oxygen tank with NOS. They are colour coded for safety and most business I know wouldn't risk their licence for a couple of dudes with an O2 tank.

mmmm... i wouldn't use an oxygen tank for it... you could probably get away with it with some jury-rigging (if you could get anyone to fill it), but i wouldn't try it.
Oxygen is stored as a high pressure gas, while nitrous liquefies at a fairly low pressure, so the tank would be filled with a liquid instead of a gas. Plus, you'd need to rig up adapters, because the fittings on the tanks and regulators are made to prevent people from using the tank for anything other than what it's intended for (not to restrict people, but for serious safety concerns).

Just spring for a proper tank...
it's not like it won't pay for itself within (assuming constant nitrous consumption - queue laughter) a single filling! (nitrous chargers - 600/$200 = 33 cents per charger = $1/24g nitrous = ~$20/lb. Those large tanks often hold 50lb of nitrous, so unless you're paying a grand for your first full tank w/tank included, you're getting a good deal.

i have a 11lb tank here in the UK, with a simple tap on the top - works very well. Bought it second hand from a drag racing guy on ebay, then sawed off the dip tube, and re-sealed the bottle with a nice easy to open screw tap.

Very hard to find a refiller though if you dont have a contact

I was afraid that there would be tank regulations, but safety comes first :)

I'll look into renting or purchasing an N2O tank from a local supplier when my roommates and I can put together the funds :D
