Benzos Nitrazepam and skin flushing

I took 7.5mg of nitrazepam about 4 hours ago, and around an hour later my body started turning mildly red and hot. Most noticeably in my face. Has anyone else experienced this? Aside from feeling kind of hot (as it was a hot day) I didn't notice my reddish skin until a few minutes ago when I looked in the mirror, which was an unpleasant surprise. I feel and look like I am slightly sunburned, but I am certain it is not.

When searching google, I found this is a rare side effect of nitrazepam and is also potentially dangerous. I don't feel sick or have a fever or any other side effects. Actually I am feeling quite comfortable and benzoed ;) Ideally, I don't want to go have to contact a doctor about this. Especially since I am not prescribed per se. But if I need to I will.

Would applying hydrocortisone be a good idea? Taking ibuprofen for it's anti-inflammatory effects? A cold shower? Any advice as to what I should do would be greatly appreciated!
 
Would you describe the redness on your skin as a rash or just as being kind of flushed? Its possible that you're having an allergic reaction to the medication.
 
It is just flushed, no rash or itching, no shortness of breath. My face is a little red, hot to the touch, and feels slightly puffy.

It feels kind of when I took a high dose of niacin when I was a young stoner, as I had been told is would reduce weed tolerance. My whole body turned red and hot, much more so than now. I just took a cold shower and waited it out and I went felt normal after a few hours.

I am not allergic to diazepam, alprazolam, midazolam, clonazepam, temazepam or lorazepam. Also, I have done nitrazepam once before at 10mg and this didn't happen.

Glad you're feeling better! Nitrazepam isn't commonly prescribed here so I'm not extremely familiar with its more rare side effects, but the only thing I can think of is that maybe it caused some hypotension resulting in skin flushing.

Is it only with this benzodiazepine that you experience it? Or with others as well?
 
When I said "I just took a cold shower and waited it out and I went felt normal after a few hours." I was referring to while on niacin, not now. I am still flushed and my face is hot, even after like 6 hours. Should I be worried? What should I do if I am having an allergic reaction?

I must have edited my last post after you already asked about my experience with benzos.

I have tried and am not allergic to diazepam, alprazolam, midazolam, clonazepam, temazepam, lorazepam and (if you count them) zolpidem and zopiclone. Also, I have done nitrazepam once before at 10mg and this didn't happen. I would say I have done classic benzos 70+ times even though I don't really like most of them except temazepam and midazolam. I was prescribed zolpidem for a year and liked it a little too much, so I decided to quit before it became a problem.

Nitrazepam comes in 5mg and 10mg pills. Did you cut one pill in half or did you take one 7.5mg pill? If so, I suspect it isn't nitrazepam.

Although if you googled nitraz side-effects and read about this particular one, I don't know...

I have 5mg nitrazepam pills and took one and a half, for a total of 7.5mg. They are white and have a perforation along the middle which makes them easy to break in half.

My face is still slightly red and puffy but has gotten better since last night. I am almost certain this was an allergic reaction to the nitrazepam. I did a lot of googling myself and found that my symptoms fit those of nitrazepam side effects.
 
It could be a mild allergic reaction.
But 7.5 mg nitrazepam? Maybe it's 7.5 mg temazepam?

In anycase, if its nitrazepam then I would stay away from nitrazepam's entire family (clonazepam, flunitrazepam).

If it's temazepam, then I would stay away from its entire family (oxazepam, lorazepam, lormetazepam).

I am confident that it is nitrazepam. It is name brand (Roche) and in a blister pack that says nitrazepam. I believe you are right about it being a mild allergic reaction. My face is still a little red and swollen but it is slowly going away.

I have taken temazepam quite a few times and wouldn't even feel 7.5mg (usually take 60-90mg)

I have taken clonazepam a bunch and never had any adverse reactions, but to be on the safe side I will be sure to stay away from the nitrazepam family. Thanks for the advice! Are there any other benzos than clonazepam and flunitrazepam I should watch out for?

Nope. The 7-nitro benzo family consists of clonazepam, nitrazepam, and flunitrazepam. Nitrazepam is actually the prototype and the parent drug to both.

Nimetazepam is derived from nitrazepam aswell, but it differs from the other 7-nitro's. It's really not considered a 7-nitro. It metabolizes like the 3-hydroxy (temazepam, lorazepam, lormetazepam, oxazepam) benzos (via glucuronidation), but it produces nitrazepam as a metabolite and nitrazepam is metabolized through oxidation.

Could definitely be a minor allergic reaction. Allergic reactions to medicine are strange. The symptoms you can experience vary greatly from person to person. I am allergic to Fluphenazine. (Some kinda anti-psychotic) I had to find this out the hard way, because that Psych I was seeing was incompetent. She prescribed it for sleep and claimed it would make me stop having horrible nightmares due to PTSD.

Well the first night I took it, a couple hours later my muscles started going insanely tense and spasming and tightening on their own. My neck would bend back and to the side as far as it could so I would be looking liek straight up and too the left. Icouldn't move it back. All my muscles were doing this. I thought I was having a stroke or something since my tongue and left side was all numb and shit.. I went to the hospital and they gave ma shot of benadryl and it just went away.. For 900 dollars.

And the best part is, when I saw my Psych a couple days later I told her about it. She was like, "OH yeah many people take benadryl with fluphenazine at night because a lot of people are allergic." WELL WHY DIDN"T YOU FUCKING SAY THAT IN THE FIRST PLACE YOU DUMB HUMAN PERSON"

Thanks for all the info kokaino, you seem quite knowledgeable on this subject. My face is still red and puffy. I know the half life of nitrazepam is 15-38 hours, so would that explain why it is lasting so long? Would hydrocortisone cream help?

I have never had an allergic reaction to a drug before and was looking at all these worst case scenarios last night, like possible anaphylactic shock. It had me seriously panicking.
 
You should be fine. Nitrazepam has a somewhat intermediate to long half life, so that's why you are still have the sypmtoms. Don't worry, they'll pass. Just take something like Benadryl - it works great for all types of allergies.
 
All symptoms are now gone! Thanks for your help and I'll be sure to stay away from the nitrazepam and it's family from now on.
