nirvana vs alice in chains

It depends where you were at at the time. AIC always, during that period, stood lurking dangerously in the shadows of Nirvana. AIC were closer to the cold hard floor than Nirvana ever were, but Nirvana united the 'whole scene', both in a commercial and non-commercial way. They teetered very delicately on that edge - always ready to topple either one way or the other. I think this is something that always haunted Kurt Cobain.

Never bought an AIC record, nor did I ever see, or want to see them live so that's an easy question for me.

Love both dearly, though AIC simply has more stuff to listen to. It should be noted that I am referring only to AIC recordings featuring Layne. I've always been a bit offended by the reformed AIC.

These two groups made the two best MTV Unplugged installments.

My personal preference is AIC. Loved them since i was a little kid. Love Nirvana too though. Two different styles.

Layne was so amazing still gives me chills listening to him and he could thrash too not too mention sexy as hell :-)

I couldn't agree with you more and Layne nailed that like no other listening to him come on stage and sing nutshell you can feel the lyrics raw talent dude

Love both their voices though actually but Layne was one hell of a singer. He was more of a trained singer than Kurt. Kurt was a great songwriter though. Man,to have them both still here. Fuck dying young.

It is so subjective it is tough to say tbh. Hmm talented as in a single person prolly Kurt b/c he did all the writing and singing which is not easy when it comes to writing a catchy melody. Layne and Jerry shared duties with Jerry being the chief composer and layne being the main voice. Jerry wrote the chord prgs/riffs/basic melodies and layne took them and expanded on them iirc. Overall I like each ones body of work about the same but AIC guitar work was better and nirvanas rawness and unpredictability/creativity was better. In the end apples and oranges

I love both bands, but personally if we are going with grunge or Seattle bands from that time I think Soundgarden beats both, and beats all grunge bands.

I think they are so underrated in comparison to both Nirvana and AIC, perhaps if Chris Cornell had died and either Cobaine or Staley had lived theyd' be more respected, but I doubt it.

Soundgarden is a great band but Layne Staley was and is a voice still trying to be imitated today I'm sorry but I have to disagree it had nothing to do with his death that made his voice stand out

Thank you!! I ingest the new aic only because of the remaining members but I'm sorry there is no pain in duvalls voice he can't exude emotion the way Layne could you either have it or you don't and he doesn't

Alice in Chains. Voice along with Jerry Cantrell just is sooooo good, the harmony is perfect. The songs are just so powerful. It can be dangerous for someone in recovery to listen to AIC IMHO. I try to avoid if I am feeling in any type of way because it can be triggering. Nirvana, well, I don't want to be starting something. Kurt.

lately i've been actively trying to avoid comparing bands/music in a "what's better/worse" kind of way. i think all music is valid in its own way if its played with genuine feeling, and saying some music is "better" than other music is kind of missing the point. its art, its not a competition.

that being said, i do realize OP asked "what do you like more", which is a matter of personal preference and certainly a valid question. just thinking out loud, i guess.
