Nine hospitalised after using Kronic

UP to nine people were hospitalised - with illnesses linked to the use of Kronic products - in Perth overnight.

The patients suffered severe heart palpitations and high blood pressure.

Five confirmed cases, including a 29-year-old man, were recorded at Joondalup Hospital, but it is believed there were another four cases across Perth last night.

The revelation has prompted the State Government to draft new regulations that will ban another 14 synthetic cannabinoids within a fortnight.

Mental Health Minister Helen Morton said she was most concerned about the possible long-term impact of the substances, including drug-induced psychosis.

``Their heart palpitations, high blood pressure, and their general feeling of being very unwell has subsided,'' she said today.

``But we will not know and nobody knows because there are no clinical trials to show what the long-term effects of this sort of substance is on your health and in particular you don't know about the potential for this substance to trigger a psychotic illnes in a person.

People are taking a huge risk if they continue to take these substances.''

Ms Morton said it was not yet known what brand of Kronic had been consumed by the affected people. The ages of the people affected were not known yesterday.

The Health Department started work yesterday to identify at least another 14 synthetic cannibinoids that will be banned.

Ms Morton said the products would be banned by regulations introduced by the Health Minister within the next fortnight.

Curious....wonder if they were all from the same group or at the same party?

Maybe it was just a stronger than normal batch and they had anxiety attacks?

Gotta love some of the comments on mainstream news websites -

Perth would be heaven without junkies and bogans Posted at 10:42 AM Today
who cares.....should have been fatal for all I care. people like these do not deserve any hospital treatment either.

:o kind of frustrating reading that kind of thing but I've learned to ignore it.

At least people have a bit of a warning this time.

I too would be interested to know if this was a group of people using together who all freaked out and/or possibly had a bad batch or if that many people had bad experiences in one night. I wonder if there have been any actual fatalities as a result of synthetic cannabanoids, particularly in the form of a herbal cannabis alternative that is laced with them like kronic or if these cases of hospitalisation are just people getting anxious and thinking their lives are in danger when they arent. Either way it is unfortunate these people had bad experiences and that there is now more bad publicity against these substances.

There's a big difference between using pure synthetic cannabanoids and some herbal mix. Who really knows what goes into them? (besides the vendor obviously). Sounds like a bunch of anxiety attacks to me which are quite common when overdoing strong cannabinoids. The article doesn't mention which illness these people contracted either lol. Just some symptoms that honestly sound like a panic attack.

The article does make a bit of sense though; who knows what long term effects the herbal blends will have, especially since they often have a mix of cannabinoids. And at that, we have no idea on the long term effects many of these cannbinoids may have. Banning another 14 will not make a difference; it just drives chemists to be more innovative, which may even be a good thing since it will introduce novel synthetics.

After reading the wiki page on John W. Huffman, I can see why he is concerned about the widespread use of these substances; they may be harmless or terrible for you, there's not a whole lot of information out there. I can barely find anything about rcs-4 but to me it seems like it would make for a very effective medicine (makes me sleepy, hungry and generally happy with less anxiety and paranoia). Patients undergoing chemotherapy could really make use of some of these new synthetic cannabinoids and I'm sure they can help with many other medical issues. Driving innovation could lead to some promising results since there are more than enough volunteers willing to be guinea pigs and try this stuff out. CP-55,940 gave me massive munchies and an incredible sex drive and lasted quite a bit longer than some of the JWHs/other synthetic cannabinoids. More research needs to be done and it will be a long time before anyone can say with certainty that these substances are good/bad for your health.

For the time being, I would stick to making your own blends so you at least know what's in it and how strong it is.

Glad I havn't even bothered trying any of this really, by reviews weeds is superior thus why bother? a different high that you don't know what can happen in long run? trippy, weird? I just don't get it really, use natural weed.

^ There was heaps of discussion about it in the kronic thread, but there are plenty of reasons why people would use it... because it was legal, because they want to try something different, because they don't know a dealer, etc.

even though they are sticking to the story of it being weed they smoked and not kronic, i think a friend of a friend was one of the girls hospitilized over the weekend. small world.

But also tons of prescription medications come out that get only 4 week trials. Patients are the Guinea pigs. No one seems concerned about that. These drugs cause much more damage and deaths than the illegal drugs.

Seriously...what a stupid world we live in.

Ahh, nothing like a good cannabinoid panic attack to ruin some sorry teenager's weekend.

It's a good thing weed is illegal (sarcasm).

That's a massive call, sources? I haven't heard of people dying in drug trials..

What is the actual active ingredient in kronic...?

supposedly a jwh. i don't think they've ever publicly announced the active ingredient, obviously to dodge customs but that's a little late now. natural herbs and happy highs and all that shit.

their site may mention it.

if you're smoking this you're wasting an absorbent amount of money on an unknown active which might be bunk. stick to the real stuff, marijuana. or the jwh pure powders if you have a decent vendor.

with all the new prevailing discussion i hope those people are opting to give the kronic up. go without until you find a decent weed dealer or just go without altogether. there's plenty of other drugs out there.

One thing that a lot of poeple seem to be forgetting is the drug screening factor. I know where I am there is a very decent population of miners and those who are sub-contracted to the mines who are randomly tested and therefore cannot smoke cannabis. I'd imagine there would also be a good amount of people who are drug tested for porale who are also in a similar scenario.

they've already started the process (in WA) to test for an amount of jwh metabolites so they're still going to be playing russian roulette. it won't be long till every mine in australia has implemented jwh metabolites into it's screening. they've been screening for cannabis for a good while now.

i know of people who know they're going to test positive, they see the bag with the lucky dice in them, turn round, call in sick to avoid it. there's other ways of getting around it but i won't get into that.
