Nightmares after 5HTP

I've tried different types of SSRI's for depression and anxiety . I stopped them as the side effects were pretty bad for me. The last one i tried, Celexa, worked very well for me but I gained almost 15 pounds in 6 months so i stopped 3 months ago (luckily I lost 8 pounds so far).
Anways, so I wanted to take 100 of 5htp once a day but after 2-3 days I started getting very weird dreams. I do take MDMA every other weekned or so and I did get vivid dreams once in a while but nothing like the "nightmares" i get after 5HTP. I continued to take 100 everyday for almost two weeks but the horrible/freaky/dreams wouldn't go away and it came to a point I would be scared to go to sleep....so I stopped. I dont' wanna fall back into depression and I feel the anxiety is coming back. Any suggestions would be gladly appreciated.

I know exactly what you mean about 5-htp and nightmares............I take it semi-regularly due to my empathy virus :) and the nightmares are brutal sometimes>like waking up screaming...not good.

Try other anti-depressants. There are stimulating ones sych as Lexapro and Effexor
which generally would make some people even lose weight.

Otherwise if 5-htp is really working take it with some kava-kava. It is a weak sedative,
and a natural one at that. You could buy it at healthfood stores. It should help you relax
during your nights.
Also rememeber the more you think about having nightmares the more chances you ll have
bad dreams. Dreams are thought to be influenced by what we think about most during day/
what worries us. So try to relax and not trip/think about nightmares much

Effexor is indeed a stimulating one working on the norepinephrine and dopamine centers, wellbutrin also does this, but Lexapro is definitely not a stimulating one and a lot of people actually gain weight on it. They actually put people on Lexapro for the express purpose of weight gain. I have been on Lex for quite some time and unless I am taking something to counter-act the munchies I am eating more than usual for sure.

Celexa was the first version of Lexapro and it sucks compared to Lexapro. With Lex they isolated the part that works from Celexa and enhanced it. Then they dropped the other parts of it that contained a lot of negative side effects and hence we have Lexapro. THe only SSRI or anti-depressant that's ever worked for me, and I've taken just about all of them.

My bad. Yea I lost like 10 pounds on Effexor and had much more anxiety.
As for Prozac I gained 15 pounds which was nice. I always thought Lexapro was an SSNRI just like Effexor but I guess not.

Yeah, effexor for me killed my appetite and makes you feel like a zombie.

Though oh 5htp i did not have nightmares. Sometimes vivid dreams that provided to be restful. Mind that i did not mix the 5htp with any SSRI or similar re-uptake inhibitors.

Discontinue your MDMA usage as I used to get nightmares from mdma use itself, and id find taking 5-htp or melatonin id get VERY vived dreams that seemed almost real.

Honestly, if your worried about depression and anxiety, GET OFF MDMA, that drug ruined my life mentally and physically for a long time until I was able to get out of that pool of depression. Even at your doses at "every other week or so" is enough to create big problems.

Same for me lexapro is the only SSRI that has worked for me, and has the least amount of side effects. Although I did gain some weight its nothing compared to what the others did, and lexapro works great.

Which is why its perscribed so much.

The only times i've been able to use 5-HTP to positive effect, is during or directly after using MDMA. I've tried using it on normal days, but if i go for more than a day or two, then i get depressed and angry. Not a comfortable feeling at all. Using it in conjunction with a few other vitamines and protective foods/agents for rolling purposes is great. Even then i only take 50-100 mg during and maybe that much again the day after.

I would agree that it does seem like your MDMA use is occurring more frequently than you might want. That is if you want to avoiding either "losing the magic" or getting other less pleasant long term side effects. Once every 4-6 weeks seems to be a good minimum time between doses for the most part. How much MDMA are you taking in a night? At once?
good luck
