Kano (Nigeria) (AFP) - Police enforcing Islamic law in Nigeria's city of Kano publicly destroyed some 240,000 bottles of beer on Wednesday, the latest move in a wider crackdown on behaviour deemed "immoral" in the area.

The banned booze had been confiscated from trucks coming into the city in recent weeks, said officials from the Hisbah, the patrol tasked with enforcing the strict Islamic law, known as sharia.

Kano's Hisbah chief Aminu Daurawa said at the bottle-breaking ceremony he had "the ardent hope this will bring an end to the consumption of such prohibited substances".

A large bulldozer smashed the bottles to shouts of "Allahu Ahkbar" (God is Great) from supporters outside the Hisbah headquarters in Kano, the largest city in Nigeria's mainly Muslim north.

Kegs containing more than 8,000 litres of a local alcoholic brew called "burukutu" and 320,000 cigarettes were also destroyed.

"We hope this measure will help restore the tarnished image of Kano," said Daurawa.

Since September, the Hisbah have launched sweeping crackdowns and made hundreds of arrests in Kano following a state-government directive to cleanse the commercial hub of so-called "immoral" practices.

Dogs

Imagine if Nigeria wasn't such a struggling nation and they could have actually afforded to sell all these... because they were already made... would have paid for at least a few schools in Nigeria, lets be serious they fuckin needed that money.

320,000 cigarettes & 8,000+ litres of beer, sold to a western nation would have made at least half a million dollars on the wholesale, bang, done, new schools.

But nah, imagine that.

When I Google Images Kano the entire city is just shacks. I don't think the worst problem they have is beer. The non Muslim south has Lagos, where they drink lots of beer, and it looks like a modern metropolis. Get your shit together Kano. You dont look like you even have indoor plumbing and your southern neighbours are already pros at internet scamming.

I have never heard of a problem associated with muslims or religion for that matter8).. you know who created religion?

Booze and cigs are the worst drugs known to man. They're really not helping anything tho, you can get incredibly cheap heroin in Nigeria.

This is one of those articles where I really don't care. Call me a nationalist but lets focus on fixing my country, not every other country around the globe.

I wasn't aware that Nigeria was practicing Sharia Law.

240,000 bottles of beer in the truck, 240,000 bottles of beer. Take 'em all down, smash it because of religion, 240,000,000 bottles of beer will come again. Doesn't quite sound as good as the old version.

allah would not approve imo

I was going to say something similar, I know Allah is great and all, well that's what I keep getting told and I know that repeating a lie or a truth makes it 100% true in the minds of those repeating it and hearing it (just look at Australian/Global Politics), but would he approve of all those Nigerian 419 scam emails? Maybe it's 419 lashes and only a few virgins in the afterlife. Do they have amendments to the holy scriptures? Maybe since it's not expressly forbidden to rip people off via the internet, Allah doesn't give a shit.

Yeah, the figures are in and that is exactly what's going to happens 8)

This is the exact same thing they are doing with cannabis plants in the US and other "developed" countries.
Same same.

Bwa ha ha! This is a really good joke. Since it obviously works everywhere else in the world, during alcohol prohibition in the US, now with drug prohibition everywhere....
