Nicotine / smoking mega-thread *mega merged*

Is it healthier?? Well you're not getting the smoke/tar/nasty chemical part of the cigarette, but you're still getting the nicotine, which is not shown to be carcinogenic in itself, but may promote carcinogenic/mutagenic processes.

Right, but the vast majority of carcinogenesis and other respiratory disorder (and heart disease, for that matter) is from inhaling burning plants.

Someone mentioned it, but it will be easier to run a taper with e-cigs, as you can control the level of nicotine released.

I found Aniracetam to be an excellent smoking cessation aid. You simply take one or two a day, and have no urge to smoke. If you smoke while on it, you'll feel real shitty, IME. This further prevents smoking. Drinking lots o water and excercising helps WDs go faster, sleep comes easier, and body repairs faster.

E-cigs don't have the beta-carbolines (MAOIs), so it's not nearly as fullfilling IME. If you can handle this, then it might be your best bet if your looking to cut down rather than cold turkey.
Nicotine gum is alright, same concept as e-cig (no MAOIs).
Snus is better then smoking, but still addictive (I don't know if MAOIs are in oral tobacco).
Chantix has good results from what I've heard. I'd think it's expensive though.
Aniracetam is non-toxic and pretty well studied. I have seen no studies on it relating to tobacco withdrawal, but it worked hella good for me quitting cold turkey. It's mad cheap too, for a drug (~$40 for 20 grams).

I find nicotine vs nicotine and MAOIs to be vastly different in terms of feeling and pleasure. Nicotine, by itself, is A LOT less addictive (and rewarding) than with MAOIs. If you use caffeine, use 1/8-1/2 of it when you stop smoking.

Quitting smoking? Need help.

Hey all, I'm 20 years old and Ive been smoking for about 6 months. I started by accident when I was smoking a bit of weed an I was in a very down state. Anyway I was smoking a 25 pack of 12ml over a period of 2 - 3 days. Ive wanted to stop because its so dumb and I don't even enjoy it anymore. I started smoking 6ml smoked an was going through about the same amount and now I'm down to 4ml and using about the same. I can't smoke often because I live at home and mum would kill me if she knew and I hardly ever smoke around my friends because they will think I'm an idiot even though a few of them smoke. So is this going to work? Im planning on using 4ml smoked for about 2 weeks and then going down to 1ml and then cutting back the amount until its nothing. Will this work or will it still take allot of will power to stop?

I tried E cig once, was thinking it will be some bullshit but as I quickly learned e cigs ass rape true cigs.Better taste, better high.... simply better

Wow thats like $15k ish you spent on cigs. I am not a fan of cigs, but I can see myself likking the e-cig too much.
As DOB said... e-cigs rape regular cigs...

Figured I'd bump my own thread instead of starting a new one... The sharp chest pains are back. They started yesterday, the day after I saw my new doctor (go figure). I also started going to the gym on Monday--Been working up a sweat on the bike each morning for 15 minutes (~3 miles), doing the treadmill for 15 minutes, and doing numerous lifts...

Do you think this could be my lungs "simply trying to expell all the toxins that have built up over time," as T. stated? Or that my lungs are just unused to the exercise?... I have been quiet sedentary lately...

The last time I had these pains, they only lasted a week or two... How long should I let this go on before seeing a doctor? :-/ I don't want to seem like a hypochondriac having just been there. She listened to my lungs and everything--Didn't seem like anything was out of the ordinary...

id advise u to take it more slowly. 3 miles on the bike in 15 mins is pretty darn good (unless ur resistance is on the bottom level =P), and 15 min of treadmill has to be ~2 miles. and lifting after? dayumn.

i work out regularly but after a sustained break i am definitely more cautious in slowly ramping it up, and i dont have much chest tightness =P

dunno how much this'll help, as i learned it when i was a kid and it's unverified, but when im rly tired putting my hands behind my neck (like im bout to get arrested) helps -shrugs-

^ The resistance is kinda low on the bike--Though even on a relatively hard program yesterday, I still did 2.7 miles. The 15 minutes on the treadmill is only walking, at most 3.6 MPH, so not fast at all. And the lifting I do is on the lowest weight setting, and very few reps. I'm a weakling.

I'm gonna have to try doing that the next time I start hurtin'. It's never during the exercises or even directly after. Seems to be four to six hours after. But I can see why putting your hands behind your neck like that helps--Straightens ya up. I'm going to have to try it when it hurts next. :)

Feeling Discomfort from Smoking Cigarettes

As a lot of smokers say, and as I have personally found out, the buzz one gets from smoking a cigarette for their first few weeks of smoking is as good as the buzz gets, sometimes never returning even after long breaks from smoking.

I've noticed that I can only enjoy smoking if I only smoke for a few days then take a week or two off from smoking - otherwise I have found that smoking physically makes me feel like absolute shit. Why is this?? Does anyone else experience this?

Even though I know it's going to make me feel shitty, I sometimes smoke anyways out of boredom, and to give in to craving.

These episodes of feeling like shit after smoking only get worse the more often I smoke, until it gets to the point of causing so much discomfort that I have an anxiety attack, and tell myself to quit for a while.

I can't imagine what the cause of my symptoms are... Maybe it's because I have been using amphetamine long before I started smoking, and I think it caused me vascular damage. Now, the blood pressure increase from smoking is maybe compounding with the vascular damage, leading to my symptoms.

Or is this how everyone feels? But maybe they have become desensitized to it or don't notice it?

I can't describe the discomfort as it is a qualia of displeasure that I can't find words for.
I guess maybe I could describe it as similar to the pain one experiences when they look into a bright light while having a migraine, but that sensation of discomfort is all over my entire body, not just in my head.
It lasts for about 5-15 minutes, with after effects lasting up to 45 minutes.
Sometimes I feel nauseous too.

You might think that maybe my body just doesn't enjoy nicotine or tobacco, but that couldnt be right because for my first few weeks of smoking I LOVED it. But I could only smoke about half a cigarette before I got too dizzy. Maybe I'm just smoking cigarettes too fast (but I usually finish my cigarettes in the same time that other smokers do), or maybe I haven't been smoking consistently enough to have a tolerance that matches the speed at which I smoke cigarettes.

Maybe I'm inhaling the smoke wrong?

Maybe my mind is just very fine-tuned with the condition of my body's health. I have panic disorder, and one theory I've had is that I get panic attacks when something is wrong with my body, like maybe I have a cold or flu or something kicking in, and having a panic attack is maybe my body's way of subconsciously alerting my body. Perhaps then my mind is just sensitive to physical body loads from drugs like nicotine.

My mother and step father chain smoked around me constantly for the first 17 years of my life. Maybe my lungs and body have just had it with cigarette smoke?

I want to enjoy smoking again, although I know it isn't healthy - I feel that on the rare occasions when I do enjoy smoking, I am still able to control myself and not start chain smoking.

I just want to be able to smoke 2-4 cigarettes a day and enjoy them when I do.

Thanks for any advice or responses. Sorry I know this post got kind of long and maybe redundant. Im on speed right now so its hard to judge things like that.

I'm really at a loss for a definite answer.

Cigarettes are poison. You don't feel good after loading your body with multiple cigarettes in a day? Big surprise there. :P

Seriously though, we're not here to help you learn how to enjoy any drug. If a drug is causing you adverse effects, that should be your clue to stop taking said drug.

Smoking in public??

I started smoking cigarettes in September 1976. At that time a person could smoke in a bank, supermarket or even go to a non smokers house and they would have an ashtray handy. Now you can't even get a non smoking section anywhere. My question is, what has happened to society!!? You can drink yourself to death in a bar (and I do) and drive home (and I do) but God forbid you smoke!!! I wanna know why this has come to pass. Enlighten me please!!

non smokers started bitching, and with the rising of cancer everyone got concerned with their health, even though you can get cancer from pretty much anything you eat nowadays.

Times have changed so much HC. We must be around the same age because I remember when my big sister started smoking and my mom didn't have a probelm with it. When I turned 14, I was mostly into weed but my mom told me I could smoke now in the house because that's the age she let my sister smoke.

Even going to my first rehab at 15, they let us smoke inside anytime but we couldn't have lighters. We had to ask the staff for a light. You could go to any store as a kid and buy smokes at 60 cents a pack!

What bugs me now is even when you're outdoors trying to have a cigarette, people walk past and do that fake "cough-cough" and look at you like you are a disgusting individual. I wanna tell them to go fuck themselves. You're getting me on a rant now. I feel like we have no rights anymore.

There are even companies that will not hire smokers. Doesn't matter if you do it in the privacy of your own home. They "test" you for tobacco. This is fucking big brother we read about but never believed would happen. :(

That's what I'm saying. Second hand smoke is bullshit!! My family doctor smoked while he was examining me and my parents never complained. I think us smokers didn't speak up in time. I write this as I was kicked out of a restaurant after dropping $350.00 for a meal. I toured Europe and they always let you smoke after meals. WTF is the matter with the United States?

The propaganda artists did a good job villianizing cigarette smokers. It happened quite suddenly as I recall when I was in an airport restroom back in 1986-ish when some woman told me I was not permitted to smoke. That's when "The Clean Air Act" in Florida was enforced. But I remember working at the college later than this and professors were still smoking in their offices. Then the do-gooders had a problem with people smoking inside buildings. It was so long ago I can't recall exactly when but once they enacted this, you had to take it outside.
