A high childhood IQ may be linked to drug use in later life, particularly among women, a new study shows. Analysis of almost 8,000 people showed that men with a high IQ at the age of five were around 50% more likely to have taken drugs such as amphetamines or ecstasy 25 years later than those with low IQ scores.

Oops. Looks like the article has been pulled. No sign of it in Google Cache either.

The link still works, article hasn't been pulled (or it was put back up)
I also have noticed on my own studies, that the very intelligent people all seem to seek for LSD, psilocybin.
Mostly LSD as this is what they seem to do so much research on.

I think intelligent people can see through the lies, and also research for themselves the facts and then coem to their own decisions.
Just like that other article "children who go against the rules might be more intelligent, as they believe they can go against the authority" (or something like that) it might go the same way with this, the authority being the DEA, and then the drug users researching for themselves and finding out that there are actually safe ways to use drugs.
And many of them are not going to harm you if used correctly (like anything, really.)

(i'm still looking for LSD.. been researching for years, hunting for 1 year :( )

I think people of a certain intelligence get bored quite quickly, and so drugs offer new opportunities to be entertained. I wouldn't assume that all drugs fall into this category though. I've met too many idiot stoners, though it could be the weed that makes them idiotic. Same generally goes for people who drink alcohol for its psychoactive effects...It is a cross section of IQs.

Intelligent people probably experiment with a wider range of different drugs out of curiosity...I can't see a typical 'Man I'm soo stoned' weed smoker wanting to try ketamine, LSD, opiates etc for reasons other than wanting to get fucked. Purely looking for things that get you fucked isn't an intelligent approach IMO.

Well, I only got into drugs so I could understand more about myself.
Whereas a lot of others got into them just for feeling good.
I thought it was a nice addition, but I'm interested in the change of consciousness you receive from a lot of drugs, learning from it.

I wouldn't go as far as saying that drugs make you more intelligent. Wait maybe I am. OK what is the exact correlation here?

Amongst my high school friends (4 people myself included), all were considered gifted, and were "high IQ" from childhood.

All have dabbled with marijuana, and 3 have tried various psychedelics. 2 have tried cocaine or ecstasy. And 3 are heavy drinkers.

Reasons for our drug use:
social isolation
exploration of the mind and perception

OK, folks. Here it is! The Daily Mail version of the story...

Women with high IQs 'more likely to take illegal drugs in their thirties'
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/a...illegal-drugs-thirties.html?ito=feeds-newsxml

They are more open to new experiences
Intelligent women 'don't believe they are at risk trying drugs once or twice'

Women with high IQs are far more likely to take cannabis, cocaine and ecstasy in their thirties, a study has found.

Researchers think they are more open to new experiences so are more willing to experiment with illegal substances.

The study by Dr James White from Cardiff University found that women with higher than average IQ scores were twice as likely to have taken drugs such as cannabis, cocaine, ecstasy and amphetamines in their thirties than those with lower scores.

What i was trying to say ha. Well put.

Science is Sure: Smart People Love Drugs

With over 40 years of research to support their findings, a team of British scientists was slightly surprised to learn that people with higher IQs are much more prone to drug use. "It's counterintuitive," says lead author James White. "It's not what we thought we would find." And it's not for lack of trying either.

The Cardiff University team consulted data from 8,000 people in the 1970 British Cohort Study, a group of human lab rats born in the same week in April 1970 and surveyed approximately once every five years about a broad host of topics. The results found that subjects that tested above average on IQ tests at age 5 were twice as likely to have done hard drugs within the past year, when asked at age 30. The smart kids weren't just smoking pot, either; the numbers suggest that they prefer cocaine and ecstasy. White doesn't know exactly what caused the difference but he has a good guess. "The likely mechanism is openness to experience," he writes, "and, I think, it's also this idea of having an educated view of risk as well."

This is hardly the first time scientists have connected high IQ with drug use. Last year, evolutionary psychologist Satoshi Kanazawa tracked a trend similar to that in the Cardiff study and also found that people with higher IQs were more likely to use drugs. He even took it a step further and offered a hypothesis of why. Kanazawa says that smarter people are attracted to "evolutionary novelties" like chemically processed drugs:

People — scientists and civilians alike — often associate intelligence with positive life outcomes. The fact that more intelligent individuals are more likely to consume alcohol, tobacco, and psychoactive drugs tampers this universally positive view of intelligence and intelligent individuals. Intelligent people don't always do the right thing, only the evolutionarily novel thing.

Kanazawa's theory would also support the latest findings. Because they require some basic, cocaine and ecstasy are evolutionarily novel in a way that marijuana is not. The good news for you smart people, however, is that even if you're more likely to try drugs, you're also more likely to kick the addiction faster.

what do we think about this find??
