THREE men accused of drug trafficking appeared in court today after police seized a kilogram of ecstasy tablets in raids at Melbourne homes.

Jason Downing, 31, of East Kew; Michael Thomas, 42, of Epping; and Dennis Curren, 52, of Strathewen, are all charged with trafficking a large commercial quantity of methamphetamine.

Police said they discovered the ecstasy and two ecstasy-manufacturing laboratories in raids at homes in Vermont and Campbellfield.

Downing faces an additional count of possessing methamphetamine, while Curren also faces counts of cultivating and possessing cannabis.

None of the trio applied for bail during brief remand hearings at the Melbourne Magistrates Court today.

A fourth man was expected to be charged and remanded at a bedside hearing at the Austin Hospital in Melbourne later today, police said.

The three men in custody have not yet been required to enter pleas and will reappear in the same court on February 23.

AAP

There is something on the news tonight about this but its the first lab found to be manufacturing MDMA in Victoria.

It doesn't say MDMA... would a newspaper go out of their way to use the term ecstasy to refer to methamphetamine? It does mention methamphetamine, and like we continue to say, ecstasy is only a slang word for party drugs pressed into pills... :\

The TV news story on it focused greatly on it being a MDMA manufacturing operation with massive production capabilities.

A Kilo of ecstasy tablets isn't that many anyway. Roughly 5000 if they weigh 200mg each?

Suprised they didn't find masses of money on the premises either.... or maybe they didn't mention it.

^^ you reckon that if they not mentioning money, they forgot to mention how many pills they really found then? :) 5000 is still a few pills, i would not get through them all in my life!

From News.com.au:

Det-Sgt Sayce said major drug investigation unit officers began a 12-month investigation after a fire and explosion at a house in Rowe St, Alphington, in October last year.

Forensic checks later revealed traces of a precursor chemical used in manufacturing MDMA, more commonly known as ecstasy.

Somewhat related anyway.

I like this bit:

He said the manufacturers had used unwitting labourers recruited from Centrelink to help make the drug.Mr Allen, from Alphington, was left paralysed when he broke his neck in a motorcycle accident 44 years ago.

Earlier this year, he made a round-Australia trip using a $6000 water purifying system for his mobile kidney dialysis machine.

Work for the dole? He was providing people from around Australia with employment! Not sure how "unwitting" some of them would've been.
