NEWS: The Age - 23/10/10 'Alcohol price spike fuels switch to ecstasy'

I just read that on The Age then came on here...

It left me wondering... People do ecstasy? LOL! Who are these people? Where is this ecstasy? These are LIES.

I think people are missing the point.

The Age is hardly a independent voice of reason in a world of mad journalism. It attributes a Professor Jake Najman as someone who came to this conclusion and yet on the UQ site there is no mention of the Professor releasing any sort of paper to that effect

No these is just another strike by the Brewers in the war against the governments policy to tax alcohol out of existences.

Its actually a very clever meme; "look what the governments tax is doing to our young people, its driving them to those evil ecstasy tablets".

It has comments from the government who (and strange they published this) claim that there isn't research that supports that users are seeking MDMA over alcohol due to price.

I don't know if these journos went to Uni but uni students have always been poor and have never been able to afford Smirnoff blacks (and god forbid they actually drink that shit). Uni students drink beer and goon, items that have hardly been touched by the recent tax hikes on spirits.

Come on Johnboy and Cowboy Mac? Did this Age journo really publish what you said to them?

I dunno about you, but I budget enough to still get my skittle and yeiger bombs by the many. Started the night with 5 on Saturday ;)

Seriously though, Hate this article. Really don't like it,majority of people know that the alcopops tax hasn't worked. But as I've said from the start, for the government the introduction of that tax was entirely win/win. They get to appear like doing the right thing raising the price so teen's drink less.

Even if that doesn't work in the long run the tax would stand. It's a big tax with billions of dollars at stake. This article saying that it's making people turn to ecstasy is just hogwash!

When are people gonna realise that price has very little to do with drugs. Ultimately some people like to feel various substances, price increase just makes people spend less on other things.

Take coke for example, the most expensive and prestigious drug in Australia at the moment. It hasn't stopped it's sales, people just budget for it and get it for occasions.

Ecstasy even more so, whilst the price of pills is up, more people just buy in bulk more often to make it reasonably priced. Meths the same thing, why buy an over priced gram when I can buy a qtr for 4 times as much?

I dunno, I'm feeling sick and I forgot my point.
But basically I hated this article haha.
