Cocaine market 'set to increase' in Qld
October 22, 2007 - 6:00PM

The prevalence of cocaine in Queensland is set to expand in the next three years as organised crime and bikie gangs work together to traffic the drug, a new report says.

A CMC study into trends in the Queensland cocaine industry concluded that while cocaine is less prevalent than amphetamines and cannabis, its market had expanded in recent years and had the potential for further growth.

CMC intelligence director Chris Keen said the supply of cocaine was increasing as crime groups begin to work with each other to import the drug.

"Our intelligence information indicates that outlaw motorcycle gangs are becoming increasingly involved in the distribution of cocaine and some culturally-based crime syndicates have also become involved in trafficking this illicit drug, seemingly in search of bigger profits," Mr Keen said.

Premier Anna Bligh said an increase in drug use was a by-product of the state's massive population growth.

"As we see our population grow that brings many benefits to Queensland, unfortunately it also sometimes brings increased activities that are undesirable," Ms Bligh told reporters.

"With more people moving here, unfortunately we do see an increase in some of those areas such as drug use."

There was no "silver bullet" when it comes to combating drug use, Ms Bligh said.

Opposition police spokesman Rob Messenger said more needed to be done to allow authorities to crack down on organised crime in Queensland, before the state became the "organised crime capital of Australia".

He also called on the government to support his private members bill making it an offence to be a member of an organised criminal group, when parliament sits next week.

"While the Labor government has taken a softly, softly approach to organised crime where outlaw bikie gangs are granted liquor licences and police are paid to work at bikie gangs' charity days, the Queensland coalition believes tougher laws are needed to tackle organised crime at its source," Mr Messenger said.

Ms Bligh said the government was always willing to look at any proposals from the CMC to assist in its work to smash organised crime.

QLD popular destination for cocaine
Tony Moore | October 22, 2007 - 2:26PM

Motorcycle gangs are becoming more involved in the distribution of cocaine, with south east Queensland and Cairns the two most popular destinations for the drug.

It is also being used as a gift to mark "special occasions", according to a new study released today.

The Crime and Misconduct Commission (CMC) said although cocaine remained less popular than meth-amphetamines, cannabis and ecstasy, the drug had increased in popularity since 2004.

Two recent busts - including a seizure of 140kg in Sydney and 135kg in Brisbane in September 2006 - raised the possibility the cocaine drug trade was increasing.

The report says cocaine is often used for "special occasions, including being given as a gift or shared."

CMC Director, Intelligence Chris Keen said while Queensland's cocaine market remained smaller than other illicit drug markets in the state, it had slightly expanded in recent years with the potential for further growth.

"The cocaine market is largely driven by supply rather than demand and currently the drug is seldom available," he said.

"However, with criminal networks diversifying and working with other criminal groups, this is likely to increase their ability to source and import cocaine and lead to an increase in this illicit drug.

"Our intelligence information indicates that outlaw motorcycle gangs are becoming increasingly involved in the distribution of cocaine and some culturally-based crime syndicates have also become involved in trafficking this illicit drug seemingly in search of bigger profits."

The report suggest the more harmful version of cocaine - crack cocaine - is still not widely available in Australia.

Mr Keen said cocaine was no longer the drug of affluent, university-educated professionals.

"While popular belief has previously linked cocaine use with high-income, university educated professionals, we are now seeing individuals in other vocations, not traditionally associated with cocaine, indulging in the drug."

The study shows Queensland Police arrests for cocaine had increased, though they remained low compared to other drugs.

The price of an ounce of cocaine (28 grams) in Brisbane and the Gold Coast is estimated at $7500, while a gram costs between $268 and $350. The price is considered more expensive than Sydney or Melbourne.

Mr Keen said people used cocaine in conjuction with a cocktail of drugs.

"Cocaine will often be used in a suite of drug taking, including various combinations of alcohol, ecstasy, methamphetamine and cannabis," he said.

The reports indicates the strongest place for growth of the cocaine trade in Queensland was in mixed drug use in the social drug market.

The report says: "Although at present there is not an extensive cocaine injecting market in Queensland, if availability of cocaine increases and prices reduce, injecting drugs users are likely to more readily seek it out."

Could this be retitled a growth in 5-10% pure coke at best cut with crap that makes your nose burn and novacaine/lidocaine so yopu think it's the shit when you snort it ans your face goes numb.

No money in it. If people payed twice the amount for a real dose, then yes, therer woulkd be an acid increase. A few gram of pure crystal LSD from europe countries would cost fuck all and is very easily smuggled. The only flowing money in LSD would be taking microdots with meth in them, make them addictive.

^^ lol

I have noticed that the quality of it has increased quite a bit over the past few years, there also seems to be alot more use of it as well.

mostly at wanker nightclubs, or by security guards who take roids.

haha word. I got nothing against it, i just see some people in clubs and think

"you look like an arrogant cunt who already thinks they are better than everyone else, so why do you need that 100 dollars worth of powder up your nose"

I honestly don't see it becoming huge among the younger generation when they have meth giving a much stronger high, costing much less money and far more available. Not to mention that you can combine meth with E, which is still huge among kids just growing up and getting into the party scene.

While I agree that (at this point in time) meth is far more available and cheaper than cocaine, I think its quite subjective to say that meth "gives a stronger high". From what I've heard, smoking crack can be a very intense experience. I've never tried crack, but on the one occasions I was able to obtain decent cocaine (out of about 5 attempts which resulted in crap) the effects from snorting it were very strong, and although it was fairly short lived, I'd have felt that it was probably stronger than orally consumed meth. It was also significantly more pleasurable than meth, both in terms of the quality of the positive effects of the drug, and the lack of unwanted side effects.

I've spoken to a few people before that have allegedly tried cocaine and considered the experience as very "mild". One person said "its so mild it almost feels like your not on anything, but then if you concentrated really hard you can feel it". I didn't have the heart to tell this guy (and he probably wouldn't have accepted it anyway because of his "tough guy" attitude), but quite obviously he'd gotten a fat dose of placebo. Cocaine isn't a subtle drug.

At trhis point in time ice asnd coke cost the same per gram, but I do see where you are coming from, you can still buy a point of ice etc. but a coke dealer sells grams and upwards only.

Yeah and for someone with no tolerance a point of crystal will keep them going all night (and usually well into the next day), where as you'd need at least half a gram, more likely a gram, of coke for the same thing. Personally I prefer the coke high, I've only had really good coke once, and it was fucking amazing.

That's kind of the crux of the issue, a point of meth will keep you going for 5 - 6 + hours, while a point of coke will last you what, one hour? 40 minutes?

Coke also has a reputation as a 'weaker' drug these days. Most people I talk to say 'oh it's not worth it you spend a ton of money for a 40 minute buzz,' whereas meth has a reputation as a very powerful substance. My impression was that, if you want to get purely objective, meth was stronger in that it releases far more dopamine for an equivelant doseage.

I just don't know anyone who'd be willing to spend $$$ on a gram of coke that will only really last them a night or so.

The only advantage coke really has is in it's image, meth has a very bad rep, while coke has a 'cleaner' image, as well as the whole association of being classy and glamorous.
