News - (SMH - Sept 24th) - Australia world's top ecstasy abuser: UN

That just shows that legalising drugs work.

There probably are more pill takers in U.K/netherlands, but maybe this UN result isn't based on the quantity of users but the numner of users compared to population, as our population is small at only 19mil compared to U.S and UK where there is relativelt large

Well guess thats another notch in the Aussie belt. I guess its going to make for some interesting tourism ads. "Come and see Australia because....we love ya man"

On a serious note I hope the the government doesn't get too fired up over this because I sure as hell would hate to see the government take a zero tolerance line with drugs. Imagine the effect that would have on the scene. Cops rock up to a rave and wheel everyone down to the station who is in possession of any any drugs. I think the crowd would be quite small post bust.

Beech out

Despite the humour, this is BAD thing.

The Aus Gov. could go 2 ways with this...

1. Say to the International Community (ie. US) "Fuck you! Look at us, all our citizens take drugs and we've got a society 10 times better than your fucked up crack-whore'd school-shootin redneck wonderland! If you need further proof - check out half of Europe!"

or 2. Say to the International Community (ie. US) "I'm sorry Mr Bush, you are right. We can't do anything to jeopardise future trade agreements with the US. Despite strong scientific + real word evidence to the contrary, we'll fall into line and launch another Drug War help keep this scurge of our children under control!"

Which do you think we'll choose???

maybe the UN issued a similar statement to all Western goverments so they all thought they had erious drugs problems, just to fuel the global drug war. j/k
But seriously, who cares, those stats don't proove shit and no-ones ever going to proove anything along those lines. It is impossible to come up with accurate figures here in Aus and in other countries with a much higher population its even more impossible.

Try and tell the average Joe (not to mention most politicians or people in places of power) that a UN sponsored report it incorrect, misleading or just plain wrong....

The newspaper articles all seem to point at pseudoephedrine as the main cause (havent read the official report). Most other countries, including Holland apparently, dont sell it. (my mother, whos Dutch, said they looked at her as if she was a drug addict when she asked for it recently).

So methinks it may not be available for much longer.......

then again, I remember a mate gave me some genuine ephedrine tablets once, which he said he bought over the counter in the US. But hey, since when has common sense come into it.
