NEWS: 'Reckless' teen imported deadly drug

Plenty of 16 year olds are given allowances of thousands of dollars per month, much of which could go to their savings accounts or under the mattress.

It's also not unheard of for 16 year olds to be slangin a pound of cocaine worth a bit more than a kilo of mephedrone.

Still mate, that's a whole lot of money for 16, even for a rich kid.... Sounds like some dealer or wannabe dealer had an idea to import some shit but didn't wanna risk getting busted so he offered a deal to an underage mate of his. Either way, the kid will get off lightly and the real culprit will get off, all balances out tho as long as the kid got paid.

No way would parents give their kid $20,000. No matter how rich they were, it sounds more like he was just being paid off by somebody, I think there is more to this story but then again i'm just speculating.

and also wouldn't the kid have realized that it might seem sort of suss ordering one kilo of mephedrone over the net...

My 19 year old friend was recently given $350,000 to buy a house or car with.

It does and can happen. It may not have been him getting paid off either, he could have joined money with a bunch of other people interested in making profit.

1kg is very little when it comes to mephedrone, and is also worth very little... I'd be more inclined to believe (based on the prices this kid was paying) someone like doron had conned him into it. because, aint no way, or how, a key of meph cost that much to do it yourself.

That would depend on how it is being sold. 1kg to caps could be highly profitable.

I hadn't thought about that. I bet that is what happened.

I just found this on another site, looks like you may be right MrIbis

'Driven' teen found guilty over drugs import plan
EMILY WATKINS

January 18th, 2010

A DARWIN teenager has become the first Australian juvenile to plead guilty to importing a new "emergent" drug.

On Friday the 16-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, admitted to using a fake ID to transfer $8000 to Israel to pay for delivery of 1kg of 4-methylmethcathinone, also known as mephedrone.

He also pleaded guilty to importing a prohibited substance.

Darwin Youth Justice Court heard that the teenager transferred the money and expected to pay another $12,000 when the powder arrived from China.

Commonwealth prosecutor Mark McCarthy said that when Australian Federal Police officers raided the boy's home last year, where he lived with his older brother, they found empty capsules and documents relating to postal parcels.

The boy's lawyer Peter Elliott said his client was planning to sell the drugs for $10 a capsule and keep some of it for his own consumption.

He said his young client was "driven", owning his own successful business and comparing him to media moguls Kerry Packer and Rupert Murdoch.

Mr Elliott said the teenager had made some inquiries online as to the legality of mephedrone, and had been told police did not like it being imported, but could not lay charges over it.

Mr McCarthy asked magistrate John Lowndes to consider deterring other teenagers from committing similar offences when sentencing the boy.

"There's a risk that persons involved in this trade at another level would start recruiting youths were it seen as anything less than an extremely unattractive option," he said.

Mr Elliott asked for reports to be made into alternative and periodic detentions and his client's suitability for a community work order.

Mr Lowndes adjourned the sentencing hearing for two months for the reports to be made, but told the boy that could not be taken as meaning he would not get a term of actual detention.

lol, I wonder what his BL username was

Jake: i don't disagree that fact, i know all the value of small time dealing, but for the life of me, can't see why most people can be bothered for the risk...

For those who talk importing a kilo as being stupid, it's no more stupid than importing 100g+ and hoping it gets through. The only part that would be more worrying is the charge laid for the kg over the 100g... and how a judge might look at that - but it is all circumstancial

Customs don't detect everything. Timing is everything.

true true

I work with someone who used to work for AQIS (border security). He reckons that shitloads of stuff gets through, its nearly impossible to check every single item coming into Australia.

possible, seeing the 12k payment after delivery. I can't see a manufacturer agreeing to "half now half later" kinda deal

A TEENAGER charged with ordering a deadly new drug over the internet has sparked the first Australian case of its kind in a Darwin court.

So there is a statute prohibiting "ordering a deadly new drug over the internet"? Does anybody know what he was actually charged for - because I read in a few places that he admitted to importing mephedrone which is a derivative of methcathinone.

Very nice to come clean young man, but mephedrone is NOT a derivative of methcathinone. It is a derivative of alpha-bromo-4-methylpropiophenone. I mean, why do you voluntarily suffer punishment if you have not committed a crime? First, they have to show that you broke some law - then you can plead guilty.

So what law did the boy break?

Wow ambitious little fucker!

If I had $20,000 lying around to chuck at a 1kg of powder from China I'd be spending it on drugs AVAILABLE TO ME IN MY HOME STATE. 8)

prices arnt the same over there tho. Its all about maximizing profits for people like this.

Is there a BL rule that I have missed that prohibits bluelighters from reading, or encourages them not to read posts posted by greenlighters?

The oxford definition of a derivative in this context is as follows,

a substance that is derived chemically from a specified compound: crack is a highly addictive cocaine derivative.

With chemistry; (from wiki) it's defined as
...a compound that is derived from a similar compound or a compound that can be imagined to arise from another compound, if one atom is replaced with another atom or group of atoms

While 4-MMC wouldn't be synthesised from methcathinone, it could still be regarded a derivative.
