Ecstasy and ice flooding ski scene

28jul03

ILLICIT drugs are freely selling every day to hundreds of young people visiting the snowfields, adding a dangerous dimension to the ski season's winter holiday party scene.

A Daily Telegraph investigation into the apres skiing scene has revealed party drugs could be bought at several Jindabyne night spots last week, one of the busiest weeks of the season.
During our investigation we were offered amphetamines such as ecstasy, crystal methamphetamine, also known as ice, and speed - as well as cannabis handed out in joints.

But despite the drugs being so freely offered, there have just five drug trafficking and dealing convictions in the area in the past five years, all involving cannabis.

On Wednesday night we visited Jindabyne's Station Resort several clubbers claimed to have taken ecstasy.

It's the ice that's fucking up the ski scene man, I hate that shit - makes it way too hard to carve.

I rather be snugged up with ski bunnies in the cabins than hanging around these boring ski resorts nightclubs selling over-priced drinks.

least they referred to ice as crystal meth. seems like the journo might know a thing or two.

wonder if they said no to any 'offerings' ;)

hmmm snowboarding all day on speed could be a bit of a reciepe for disaster.

friend of friend story, I know this year that they took 1kg of weed with them down to their snowfield of choice.... seems like a huuge amount to take for 1 week between 8 people. I'd rather be on the runs than stoned as. Each to their own I guess.

Why would you wan to have drugs at the snow [apart from being picturesque]. Your there to ski/board right? Not to stay awake all night and wake up feeling tired the next day which ruins your time on the snow.

^^^ true. It *seems* like a good idea, but when you get there it's really not. We had visions of partying it up in a hot tub with a few E's after a day's skiing but didn't end up doing it - all so buggered it was all we could do to eat and crawl into bed. Unless you're just up there for the socialising, it's a silly idea and a waste of money IMO.

ps. wow... a descriptive drug statement in the Herald Sun that doesn't suck!

Are you being sarcastic? Ice was originally the name given to 4-methylaminorex in it's purest form (as we all know "ice" is a fairly loose term these days.) More to the point, if the journo really did know a thing or two he would have mentioned 4-MAR as it would have looked like really exotic drugs were involved, and that the black market had really "invaded" the snowfields...

Compared to other journos, I guess he's done well on the validity of his drug data... But the article is a crock of shit :)

Lovemuffin: If you're up there for a week you could take a day off from skiing, I know I couldn't ski every day for a week. But if it's just a weekend I agree, waste of time.

another bullshit story aimed at selling newspapers.

there are more dealers in the pubs and clubs of kings cross, oxford street and cabramatta.

big fucking deal.

Yeah, we were only there for a weekend. We decided we'd rather get our money's worth on the snowfields. Would love to have a week to play up! :D

To be sure that skiing and being at the snow is a great experience by itself. There is much endorphins to be had from the fun and lifestyle -- and you're already spending so much $ to hire gear, buy tickets, etc etc. Also many people are just not skilled enough at skiing or boarding to be able to enjoy these activities while on drugs... so a trip to the snow can be turned into an expensive house party.

I'd imagine most people would probably enjoy a pill apres ski, but on the other hand, it can be fun peaking and skiing. :) Risky, but fun.

i was at the clubs mentioned in the article on the same days.. and yeah, esspecially at the 'station resort' for adam freeland and GT i noticed a lot of people who were obviously on pills ect. i didn't really notice any obvious dealing though.. i.e being asked for pills or people seeking to buy (no doubt it was happening.. but not to the extent of most sydeny clubs).. and assumed most people just bought there stuff up with them.

The article also mention's the banjo pub on the thursday.. i was there that day and there was a girl there asking everyone for canabis.. and getting quite visibly frustrated at the high amount of negative answers.. one of my mates was 'warned' by the bar staff that she was a reporter.

also on skii'ing and takng pills.. my mate and i thought this might be a good idea while chatting after a night out one time... thinking about it sober however and i relaised just how stupid this would be... i can barley walk straight when peaking let alone navagte my way, at high speed down the slopes.. 'oh look the tree looks pretty with all the snow on it... THUMP!! and how F$#$% cold would you feel!!!!

LMFAO

I started work on the snowfields a week or so ago,and i've found it easier to get meth up there than were i live.
We also found about 2g of coke under a bed in a room we were cleaning and we find about 1/8oz of pot everyday and the occasional pill, and we only clean 20 rooms a day!!---:)

Heh, gotta love BT's sense of humor. Only thing that made me laugh today. :)

I agree Six Seal.....BT is correct.

Bloody hard on ice......we need more powder......White powder......powder, powder, powder...powder everywhere.

Weeeeeeeeeeeeeee.........down the hill.:D

Personally I found this story (and Ossie's subsequent description of the circumstances of the reporter asking for drugs) to be a fucking hilarious indication of just how inept the Tabloid press can be.

So, what's it going to be next week in the Daily Telegraph?

Scientific Study Finds Snow to be 'Gateway' to Illicit Drugs

A Daily Telegraph Investegation (sponsored by the Outback Tourism Association of Australia)

;)

I think perhaps that it may be found to be something of a universal rule, that where you find healthy normal young people in sufficient quantity, you will also find drugs. Perhaps it would cut to the root of the problem to outlaw being young (and or a person).

And last, but not least, good call BT, as per.

I was down at the snow a couple of weeks ago, and went to a couple of events in jindabyne, and found it very easy to score certain illegial substances.
A another thing i found very strange was to see a sniffer dog being used inside the venue, with about 6 policemen and women, it wasn't a big party even.
I think they managed to bust a couple of people.
I don't know why they would have bothered bringing the police and dog from Canberra i presume.
I much prefer a few cold beers anyday over drugs, after going snowboarding all day :)
