Women using ice to lose weight
September 26, 2008 02:08am

YOUNG women are using the powerful street drug ice as a dangerous way to lose weight, with three admitted to at least one Sydney eating disorder clinic.

The terrifying new trend has been highlighted in the current issue of the International Journal of Eating Disorders.

Sydney University professor Suzanne Abraham, one of the report authors, warned that the women risked not only developing an eating disorder but also addiction to the destructive drug.

Professor Abraham said ice, or crystal methamphetamine, was like a supercharged version of the ordinary weight loss pill, which contains ephedrine, but people did not get addicted to the ordinary pills.

"Ice use is increasing in young women and is being used as an efficient method of weight loss," she said. "The drug may also trigger the development of an eating disorder in some people."

Clinicians and Sydney University researchers believe they are the first in the world to identify the latest use of the drug, which leads to brain damage, skin problems, rotting teeth and psychotic behaviour.

"We need people to be more aware of this happening and health professionals need to be able to treat the percentage of people who have both drug and eating disorder problems," Professor Abraham said.

The latest Australian Institute of Health and Welfare figures show that in 2004, 3.2 per cent of Australians aged 14 and older had used amphetamines for non-medical purposes in the past year and 38 per cent of this group reported the drug they used as ice.

All three women admitted to the clinic had used ice daily and showed a range of withdrawal symptoms, tolerance and dependence.

One of them, aged 21, refused to leave her house, smoking ice and exercising excessively. She weighed 37kg at her lightest and her boyfriend arranged her treatment because of her "physical dilapidation" and mental state, the study said.

Another, aged 18, began binge drinking, vomiting and using laxatives when her weight increased when she stopped using ice. Then she found out she was pregnant and had a traumatic late abortion.

The third woman, aged 20, suffered osteoporosis and anorexia.

The authors of the report said they believed special facilities were needed to deal with such cases.

Could have predicted this would get into the news.

I would just like to point out that it is real though, a lot of girls I know have used meth to lose the extra kilos.

I would also like to suggest that ephedrine is far superior to amphetamine for weight loss for so many reasons. But because of the scheduling of these 'safe' products, people are forced to use what ever they can get their hands on.

What other options have these girls got? Xenical?

Shame on the Government of Australia.

What do you know:
DESOXYN is also used short-term, along with a low calorie diet, for weight loss in obese patients who have not been able to lose weight on other therapies.

What are the ingredients in DESOXYN?
Active Ingredient:methamphetamine hydrochloride

I know of a few people male and female who have used ice and speed to loose weight sure it does the job but when you have lost the weight you want too are you strong enough to stop instantly...?

Another problem with using stims of any description to lose weight is the rebound weight gain when you stop using - definitely noticeable with speed. Controlled exercise and diet is the only way to go in my opinion (for people who are "overweight" but not "obese" at least).

yeah the rebound sucks, I'm fat now after years of stimulant abuse :|

well more portly... and possibly jolly

They're called "love handles" for a reason :D It's no fun cuddling ultra skinny people!

I can't believe they only just found out people use meth to loose weight. I knew about this when I was 16 (23 now). I was told about the speed and milk diet, favoured by models. Take the speed, dance all night and drink a bit of milk the next day. If they really wanted to loose weight, use skim milk.

That was soooooo long ago and I figured it was common knowledge. Has anyone else heard of speed and milk or coke and milk? Might have been misinfo

Sure meth helps you lose weight, but if your actually doing enough meth to lose a significant amount of weight then your gonna look like absolute shit by the end of your run. At least if you lose the weight properly and in a healthy way then you might end up with good looks and a few more braincells than you would if you were on the meth.

ARGGHH we can only just say that women are using ice to lose weight because there are 3 and that makes it plural, but just barely. Of course drug abuse has cobordbidity with psychological disorders including eating disorders. But seriously, did the ice cause it? One women got an eating disorder after using the drug. I wont stand up and defend ice because it is a terrible drug, but I would leave it to the news to instead report "3 women with eating disorders have used ice"

LOL I'm getting there.
Before ice I was built well @ 95kg with ~7% body fat. After, about 4% bf @ 80(!)kg. Lost all my muscle. Now I'm back at 92kg with hardly any muscle compared to when I started
It's just like starving yourself only not psyhcological tolling. No different. Your body goes into starvation mode and when you're done with ice, it makes you eat back what you missed out on, and then some

yeah it sure does, I remember the first time I truely quit I couldn't stop eating, now even when I have a taste I end up getting hungry :|

"Clinicians and Sydney University researchers believe they are the first in the world to identify the latest use of the drug"

Clinicians and Sydney University researchers have fanciful beliefs. Either that or news.com.au is rubbish. Probably both.

What pisses me off is, when it comes down to health/fitness people are always looking for the magic bullet. Like for fucks sake if you really wanted it badly, you'd hit the gym and smash the treadmill and weights. People will keep asking 'whats the easiest way to lose weight' until they hear the answer 'oh swallow this twice a day for 2 weeks and you should be fine'

Ice makes me gain wait, sure I won't eat while I'm buzzed or for half a day after I come down, but when I do I absolutely gorge myself for a day or two, usually ending up with more than when I started.

it's almost embarrising how they are that deluded that they're seriously trying to claim "first in the world". should probably have checked out ummm say google or wikipedia before making stupid claims:

"It is considered a second line of treatment, used when amphetamine and methylphenidate cause the patient too many side effects. It is only recommended for short term use (~6 weeks) in obesity patients because it is thought that the anorectic effects of the drug are short lived and produce tolerance quickly, whereas the effects on CNS stimulation are much less susceptible to tolerance. It is also used illegally for weight loss and to maintain alertness, focus, motivation, and mental clarity for extended periods of time, and for recreational purposes."

This isn't exactly new. The idea of using amphetamine to lose weight was one of the main story points in the movie "Requiem for a dream", which was made over 8 years ago (and the novel it was based on is over 30 years old!). Still no less alarming I guess, which is all journalists really care about.

Well if thats the case i should weigh 200 kilos lol

The amount that ive done over the past 8 years pff, did speed for over 2 years almost everyday.

lol you're lucky man :) I did it for many years, but that also included dexies/ritalin, it was only when I hit 25 and slowed down alot when I started to really pack it on

^Yeah, I agree, but it is not really the intention of the article to point out that exercise will help you lose weight. :)
