NEWS - Herald Sun 20/6/03 - Dealers Infest Nightclubs

This article is quite amusing. A good laugh.


Given that most people reading this are the (drug) uneducated parent types, I can see who will be most frightened now.

I love it when your parents cannot understand why you take drugs. Especially when the drugs make you vomit and go into convulsions. If that was the ONLY thing MD did, I sure as hell would not be taking it.

Breeding ignorance by feeding off human fear and trust. The herald sun is about as trust worthy as compulsive liar.

Though that girl that spent $400 a week on drugs, OUCH! Thats going down the self destructive path... Poor girl. Good to hear she's got it together though.
 
i agree the ppl reading this are the uneducated ones althoughi am an avid roller and an avid reader of the papers i know that most ppl in the "scene" (dont go mad not generalisng just stating local facts) my parents know i "roll" occasionally (if they knew how much i really did i'd near be dead) so yeah then i agree they are more scare tactics than anything else
 
Poorly written article which just furthers stereotyping of pople involved in "the scene". You would think they would have researched a little better.

SydKiwi: I'd say he hit the wrong button, instead of reply they pressed quote. And he just meant to have sydkiwi in bold, not the whole thing 'as a quote' of you.

Just shows how some people don't check their post once they hit the 'Submit' reply button.

ahmmm, I was replying to what you said in the second post on this thread (your first post). You stated that in Sydney you cant sell bottles of water for more than 3 bucks in clubs. I was telling you most clubs don't I've been to lately don't respect the 3 buck rule.

Wazza, you're correct. I tried to put sydkiwis name in bold but screwed up my forward slashes and what have you cos I was stonned at the time :D

Hummm... perhaps one should get a flea collar and wear it out these clubs......to prevent infestation.
 
I found the official ZoS response to the Hearld Sun article.

The management of Zos Entertainment Centre refutes the allegations made in the Herald Sun story of Friday June 20, 2003.

We have reviewed the footage from 24 security cameras on the night in question, and can find no evidence of the activities or people described by the Herald Sun. We have invited both the Herald Sun and the Victorian Police to come and inspect our extensive video footage for themselves.

Zos has in place a best-of-breed Security Management Plan, as we forwarded to the Herald Sun. This incorporates feedback from the Prahran Police and has been developed with the assistance of a former Liquor Licensing member who now provides consulting and training to the industry.

We co-operate fully with police and are aware of frequent covert police operations in our venue. We have been trading for two years, and have not had a single incident where undercover police have arrested anyone for drug dealing or identified any patrons appearing to be on drugs to our security staff.

Zos goes to great lengths to run a professional operation, pro-actively compliant with all regulations, and staffed by a dedicated and well-trained team. Our large security staff is supported by a sophisticated closed circuit TV security system. They do not let people on the premises if they appear to be on drugs. We run six bars and sell alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages to our customers. Our taps have cold water for the comfort and hygiene of our patrons.

Zos Entertainment Centre is managed with a "Triple Bottom Line" philosophy, we try to minimise the environmental impact of our business and make a positive contribution to the community. Zos is an active member of the Stonnington Council Safety Forum, and the Stonnington Licensees Accord, which is working with council representatives, Liquor Licensing Victoria, and local traders to develop a Code of Best Practice for the industry.

We endeavour to provide safe entertainment for our patrons, eliminating any risk of drug or other forms of abuse. Though it's muzza-capital of Melbourne on Saturday nights, I sorta feel sorry for the position that Zos is in considering that the Herald-Sun article suggested there were up to twenty 'drug clubs' in Melbourne (and most of us probably know which ones they are). Zos and Evolution are now in the position where they have to defend their pratices while *, *, *, *, *, *, *, *, *, *, *, *, *, *, * and * (that's all off the top of my head right now) can duck the spotlight for creating similar environments.

ZoS is one of the best run clubs in Melbourne. At least it's clean, well ventilated and they serve a wide variety of drinks. If the Herald Sun want to pick on venues, look no further than trash like *. The patrons are well looked at ZoS and they feel quite safe knowing that all people are zapped with the metal detector.

You guys aren't gonna make ME go through and take out all those venue names, are you? Yes, Zos was mentioned in the newspaper, but the rest of them have no business being posted on BL in connection with this issue yet. It's not out business to do 'expose' articles.

Well a cynic might say that the only reason those two venues got a mention was because they were the only two venues they could get into!

But nice reply from ZOS - far more thought out than the original article (but I'm sure it cost ZOS a hell of a lot more to get written than the journo's at the HS were paid to right their story

Want to also mention coming home on Friday night I saw three police cars blocking the streets in front of one of the clubs mentioned in the article. Possibly a knee-jerk reaction to the article I think, and all an exercise in futility.
 
This story was the whipping boy of the VAADA conference. I was one of about 6 or so of the speakers who used part of our time to slam the Herald Sun for this latest attrocity. The consensus was that these articles do nothing to help anyone, just reinforce stereotypes.

During the press conference I was on best behaviour and didn't give in to my temptation to snarl "Any of you fuckers from the Hun?" but I coudlnt' resist laughing loudly when one journo asked if we felt the proposed guidelines on water availability would make any change. "These same proposals have been on the table for ten years, or at least since the times of Anna Woods. Voluntary guidelines will always be ignored by those that don't care" I said.

Just to point out, I have some really potent horse tranqs here (we have horses) that are Phenylbutazone, which is also available as treatment for humans. Mammals all very similar physiology, so why shouldn't drugs be used to treat both?

Kind of getting over the whole Ketamine being an animal tranquilliser thing.

IMO information presented in this way has the exact opposite effect to what the author intended.

These types of articles only provide another reason for people to discount warnings about drugs. If one can pick holes in many of the points, it is all to easy to dismiss any factual based arguments contained in the same article.

If the media (or the government) needs to put out a warning about a truly dangerous substance, there will be too many people who dismiss this as propaganda and endanger themselves. If only they just reported the facts, not sensationism, we may actually listen when they have something important to say.
