Drugs cocaine and ecstasy laced with poison in Australia

HIGHLY dangerous batches of cocaine and ecstasy pills have hit the Australian market, with drug experts and police warning they had been bulked up with pesticides and lethal chemicals.

An international drug conference heard a worldwide shortage of MDMA had led drug manufacturers to turn to other chemicals to keep up the supply of ecstasy pills.

The same is occurring on Sydney's streets, with police detecting dangerous chemicals such as the de-worming pesticide levamisole - deemed too dangerous for human consumption.

At the same time, cocaine use was spiking. Drug squad head Detective Superintendent Nick Bingham said officers were arresting greater numbers of people for possessing the drug. It, too, was being been "cut" with chemicals.

Overseas testing had shown that toxic chemical MCPP was being used in cocaine to bulk it out.

The chemical is used to induce severe migraines and headaches to test the efficacy of medications.

"It is very, very dangerous because people don't know what's in the drugs," Supt Bingham said.

He said the social acceptance of cocaine among Sydney society was causing concern.

"We have certainly seen a spike in seizures and arrests of cocaine," Supt Bingham said.

"It's the first time we have seen cocaine seizures significantly overtake heroin, although it is still a small population of the overall drug seizures.

"[But] there's a hidden user group ... that we don't necessarily see and who don't generally come into contact with police or commit a crime apart from possessing and using cocaine."

There are calls to set up a warning system, with drug experts believing it could save lives.

National Drug and Alcohol and Research and training director Paul Dillon has returned from the international drug conference in Zurich, where many of the countries attending have a system in place to test drugs and warn users of their content.

"If we want to be serious about prevention, the more information we give users, research shows they change their behaviour," he said.

Yes, a warning system would be good. Definitely!

Wow. I wonder if this has or is being used to cut meth. I recently on two occasions sufferred very severe headaches after smoking some meth.

Eeeesh. My girlfriend and I got really sick of some ecstasy the other day. Bad migraines and nausea, along with throwing up. Spooky.

This hidden user group is called the Australian population.......... Hundreds of thousands if not millions of people who use recreational drugs or will use them at some point in their life.

If they think it's a good idea for a warning system to make users aware of these harmful chemicals in their drugs then they should allow pill testing labs here in oz like they have in the Netherlands.

And who are these drug experts they are refering to??? Considering the amount of times people here have mentioned what a great idea drug testing labs would be for harm minimisation they might be refering to bluelight ;)

Slow news day

Makes perfect sense in the current market.

I suggest buying a test kit. Even then there is no decent pills.

The smart people have stopped taking ecstasy and await it's return.

Many of them burning their neurons with other more harmful substances while they wait.

One thing that is certain is we aren't curbing our substance use/abuse due to a lack of MDMA :)

MCPP being used to cut cocaine? That is fucked up shit! The levamisole is old news, a considerable percentage of cocaine across the globe is cut with it. Pills have been shite for ages now, and imho anyone who still goes out gobbling them with any degree of regularity (if at all) is nuts.

It is good they are thinking about a warning system, it is always nice to see them considering a more harm reduction oriented approach.

Hah, certainly agreed.

Hadn't taken anything since around December when the Brown Euro's were still around, but it was a big event and we were hoping to make it a verrrrrry late night. As you can probably guess it was, but for all the wrong reasons.

Sure hope this return is quick.

I read an article in the West Australian regarding Ecstasy and it said something like more than 50% of pills seized didn't have MDMA and yet use is still on the rise.
They did mention prices are at an all time low...
I'd love to know where they got their sources from as with the current state of the market I can't even imagine that 50% of pills have mdma in them...

Wow what slow news today. We have known this for years. They use piperazines instead of MDMA in pills thesedays and people just turn to coke.

I think the key word there is 'thinking'

I'd like to see this implemented, but I'm not gonna hold my breath...

I had some more news on this yesterday from a couple of sources. It seems it's going to happen in some form or another, and it certainly seems to be fast becoming the hot topic among parts of the AOD sector. 'Tis very exciting for those of us who've been pushing hard for this for 10+ years.

As Psilo said you should look after yourself and your missus and get a test kit.
Not worth the risk dude and they're not that expensive.

Also I'd very much like to know which pill you took and which city you are from, I could get a warning up for them on Pillreports.

Pillreports mod.

Given the dubious morality of many cooks out there, it wouldn't surprise me if anybody who 'does' get their hands on MDMA is throwing in low doses along with the usual cocktail of pipes/RC's to fool testers and make the punters feel a slight MDXX buzz while still maximizing their profits.

I know I've come across batches which tested positive for MDMA but gave little/no MDXX effect.

havent had a good pill for quite some time,
testers are great, but i really hate it when they dont change... i know i shouldnt take it out on the tester... but woulda liked a nice blue to purple to black reaction... but lately nothing...
i am still suprised that i was at a club in adelaide and got offered four different types of pills..... and all were duds.. lukily i didnt blow any cash :D

I honestly can't believe people still eat pills really, everyone I used to drop with back in the day has either moved on to better and more reliable drugs or just left the scene.

The only way unscrupulous drug lords are ever going to learn is when these dumb kids stop gobbling anything that is fucking handed to them, so probably never. It really amazes me to read certain Bluelighters try and try again all the fucking time to find real MDMA despite the fact they should know theres fuck all. Buying pills in todays market is a mugs game, if you are lucky enough to get MDMA crystals it is a different story.

I quit doing "pills" in late '08 and never really looked back, I think I have taken 2 'E's' since then. By then the scene was really starting to go down the shitter and today it is a mere shadow of what it was even then. It is a real shame, I guess I am lucky MDMA was never really my DOC.
