Ban on pill presses to come into force

12:44 AEST Fri Feb 26 2010

Legislation will come into force on Monday banning the importation of pill presses as the government moves to prevent their use in the production of illicit drugs.

Preventing the manufacture and supply of amphetamines was a priority area in the fight against organised crime, Home Affairs Minister Brendan O'Connor said.

"Methamphetamine and ecstasy, which are manufactured using presses of this type, are a serious problem in Australia and a large source of revenue for organised criminal groups," he said in a statement.

From Monday, Customs and Border Protection officers will be looking actively for and seizing pill presses.

Legitimate users will still be able to import pill presses by applying for a permit from the Attorney-General's Department.

"This is an important step in combating the manufacture of illicit drugs within Australia and in reducing the illegal profits being made by organised criminal groups," Mr O'Connor said.

So, does this mean it's legal to import a piece at a time? It appears customs is only looking for the whole press. ;)

How will banning pill presses stop meth from being produced? I thought the only purpose they serve is to turn the powder into tablet form.

This maybe a step in the right direction IMO. Hopefully this will decline the amount of pipes and meth bombs going around and increases the amount of legit molly on the streets and in the clubs. These pill presses are increasingly being used to conterfit legit medications which isn't cool what so ever.

If you're importing enough MDMA to press into pills I don't see how illegally obtaining a press would be much more difficult.

There's obviously enough presses in Australia already, so I'm not sure what this achieves. There's more than enough pills for everyone anyway, even if they are shit.

Seems like a waste of time. But I don't blame them for doing it. Makes perfect sense, surprised it wasn't already banned/watched carefully

Yea they have been banned for ages. Big deal, they will sell them as capsules or powder/crystals.

That's what I don't get, I was convinced they were already banned, and you needed a permit to get them.
How does this change things? :\

More tax revenues that could be spent on treatment and harm reduction wasted on bullshit like this. Remember to VOTE these idiots out of office. Make our voices heard.... Stop prohibition and the never ending war on drugs.

Pressing legitimate medications isn't as big in Australia. With the ban of pill presses it can be argued that adulterants such as piperazines won't be as easy to classify because powders and capsules aren't as identifiable like pills with a press. We will most likely find more MDMA around the place but also more unwanted substances like 4-MMC and piperazines etc.

They are fairly simple to make really. It's been discussed before on here, I highly doubt this will have any effect whatsoever on the pill industry.

I totally agree. The majority of people getting hold of these press's cant get hold of MDMA and therefore punch out either duds, meth bombs or pips.

Hopefully this leads to more imports of decent MDMA pills.

lol

I wasn't aware they had been made legitimate :p

"Methamphetamine and ecstasy, which are manufactured using presses of this type"

You don't need a pill press to manufacture meth
n00bs!

This may have already been discussed.

Pill-presses are easy to obtain localy in the form of second hand candy or pet food presses, other popular presses can be easly made with either pneumatic or hydraulic parts. There are also many other types of clandestine pill press for which the parts are easy to obtain and assemble. Importation of pill presses, especially from certain parts of asia have been watched for a number of years.

As of march 1st, legitimate users must apply for approval from the attorney-general to import the machines. Minister for Home Affairs Brendan O'Connor says the ban will help stop the manufacture of illegal drugs. "This is one way we can reduce the distribution of drugs, by removing this element from the use of organised criminals," Mr O'Connor said.

Pill presses are bad news any ways.

I hope this will decrease duds going around and bring in more high mdma pills. Plus, Powdered form and capsule production will just take over the pill, imo this isn't doing much.

Why not legalize and regulate all drugs, no more deaths, no more lives ruined, more money. Combat the real problems such as poverty and REAL crimes (murder etc).
