A Tasmanian man says he smoked as many as 50 "cones" of cannabis on the night his friend bashed a Chinese accountancy student to death with a concrete brick.

Daniel Williams, 22, of Kingston, south of Hobart, has pleaded not guilty to murdering accounting student Zhang "Tina" Yu, 28, on June 25 last year.

His co-accused, Stavros Papadopolous, 22, pleaded guilty in March to murdering Ms Yu, and will be sentenced next month.

Papadopolous has admitted using a concrete brick to bludgeon her, before punching, strangling and drowning her at a unit in the Hobart suburb of New Town.

Her body was dumped in the Tyenna River, 60km west of Hobart.

Williams took the stand on Friday, and was cross-examined by Crown Prosecutor Tim Ellis about inconsistencies between the story he told police and his current version of events.

Williams said he didn't remember "the exact routine of how everything happened that night".

He said he may have smoked as many as 50 "cones" of cannabis through a bong that night, adding that he had a "high tolerance" for it.

Williams said Ms Yu was trying to use her phone when Papadopolous hit her over the head with the brick.

"I looked up just as Stavros brought the brick down on her head," Williams said.

"Her mobile phone hit the table and slid and the battery came out."

Williams said he didn't know how to react.

"I jumped over the couch ... I smoked dope," Williams told the court.

"I didn't want to be there. I didn't want to be in reality."

Williams told the court he was terrified of Papadopolous as he bashed Ms Yu.

"His eyes were pretty much black," he said.

"I realised he had flicked and I was just scared."

Mr Ellis asked: "You knew that Papadopolous was going to kill her and have sex with her before and after she was dead?"

"No," Williams replied.

Williams said he touched Ms Yu on the buttocks and genitals after she had been drowned in the bath.

"I was trying to show him (Papadopolous) that I was not uncomfortable with the situation," he said.

Well i hope he gets a harsher sentence than someone who gets busted with a large quantity of say weed. U watch he will get less. It makes me angry and sad to see happen time and time again. These people should be sentenced to life.
 
Man I know stavros. I knew him quite well back in the day...

Never would have thought him possible of this. Like he was a bit of a crazy guy. But like... When this story came out a few months back it was utter shock...
 
^ It really is a shock sometimes when you find out the violence that people you used to associate with often are really capable of.

This article is sensationalist crap, this guy didn't even kill anybody and if he did it wouldn't be because of the bloody weed anyway. 50 cones isn't even THAT much, I mean obviously anybody is going to be rather stoned but it isn't anything any pot head hasn't done a million times over.
 
Mate this was astounding. It really was, and still is.

I knew him from my skateboarding days back in tas. He was an alright guy, a bit mental but one of those guys you would believe to have your back always.

Shit it makes me feel bad for associating with him, but I just still can't believe he was capable of it...

Williams is a fucking bullshitter anyway. He talks so much shit and is trying to get off lightly from being an accessory...

I was going to post this up, but I've been beaten to the punch. The media will have a field day with this one. I'm not expecting a harsh sentence. Our judges really need to get their priorities straight.
 
^ Yeah man, I know its pretty shocking huh. I have been in a very similar situation except I knew the victim better than the accused murderer. Was pretty shit all around to have someone you knew reasonably well turn out a fucking killer, especially when you know the victim too.

It is easy to feel like a bad person for not noticing those tendencies in someone but I think its important to remember that killers are generally rather good at keeping that side of them concealed when it suits them.

I would argue that 50 cones in a day IS that much.
I mean... it's not out of reach, but even by my dealers standards thats a big effort. It's not un-usual for him to smoke with us and be about 25 up on us when he starts. But to me 50 in a day sounds a bit too excessive, provided the weed is at least half decent.

And I 100% agree, it's a retarded article, HE didn't do it, it was his friend, AND if he did it would have nothing to do with weed. If the murdered did have 50 cones he probably would've chilled the fuck out and not killed someone.

If you start using weed as an excuse for why you're accessory to murder - theres something wrong with you.

any drug being used as an excuse is fuckn fodder for the media to rip at.. and they really don't need that.

I'm not a weeds biggest fan either. As im sure most of you are aware.

MDMA: Turns you gay
Mephedrone: Turns you into a cat, and makes you cut your cock off.
Weed: Makes you an accessory to murder, also likely makes your friend imbibe in necrophelia
Catholicism: Makes you a pedophile. (this aint a drug, and is most likely true.. or perhaps there is an unknown drug in that communion wine)

My TWO BEST friends both have done homo things on MDMA. One slept with a guy, but I think he was bi all along. And the other one who was seemingly straight as a cucumber made out with a guy on MDMA.

Using the 'cones' as a measure for dosage is pretty lame. It's like asking how long a piece of string is really.

cones come in various shapes, sizes etc... and can be packed as much or as little as you would like.. whats to say the dude didn't have 50 cones with like a speckle in the bottom?
