Drug comes the raw prawn with dangerous change of name

February 6, 2010

I spent New Year's Eve in hospital. I don't expect sympathy. I was upright and healthy, following doctors around for a book I am writing about drugs.

Sure enough, the doors to the emergency room slid open regularly so the ambos could wheel in someone who was extremely drunk, often covered in blood from a fist or a glass. Even in Darlinghurst, alcohol was the main business of the evening.

Amid the drunken chaos, the emergency room did do a small sideline in illicit drugs. The one that caused the most trouble on that particular night was not ecstasy, cocaine, speed or even heroin. It was GHB.

A couple of young women arrived, within the space of an hour or two, having "dropped" on the drug. By the time they arrived they were lucid enough to wait on plastic seats until the nurses were satisfied they were OK to go home.

Less than a fortnight later, in a hospital far away from the sweaty inner city, another girl was not so lucky. In Albury a teenager died after taking GHB at a party. The liquid came in a container labelled "prawn syrup". Others tried it too and became violently ill. The 36-year-old man who allegedly supplied the drug was charged with manslaughter, and grievous bodily harm in relation to the partygoers who fell sick.

The latter charge was ironic, or perhaps appropriate, given one of the street names for the drug is Grievous Bodily Harm or GBH. These are not the only names it goes by. It has also been known as Fantasy. Rarely, it is described as Liquid Ecstasy or Liquid X.

Paul Dillon, the director of Drug and Alcohol Research and Training Australia, says the drug has changed name more than any other drug he knows of. The brand has been repeatedly damaged by heavily publicised overdoses - the mother dead on the cruise ship, the husband passed out in the hotel room - and so it is reborn with a new name to shake off the stigma.

This brings me to the point of this article: the way the drug has been described in this most recent case. NSW Police issued a statement on January 19 saying that "a number of young adults overdosed on a substance described as liquid ecstasy". The media picked up on this terminology, describing the drug as liquid ecstasy in numerous reports. In some cases it was simply described as ecstasy

Confusion over these two drugs only serves the interests of drug dealers trying to offload GHB to people who are after ecstasy. It is particularly dangerous for those who have tried ecstasy without obvious ill effect and expect the same from liquid ecstasy.

The truth is that there is virtually nothing GHB and ecstasy have in common, other than being taken with the aim of making the user feel good. MDMA, the active ingredient in ecstasy, is a stimulant. GHB is a depressant, and was first developed as an anaesthetic.

GHB has some advantages over ecstasy - the comedown is milder - but it is extremely easy to overdose. The ease of overdose is partly due to its liquid state. At a party it is hard enough to keep track of how many standard drinks of alcohol you have consumed.

Imagine trying to keep track of whether you have sipped precisely four millilitres or 11 millilitres of a drug, when those seven millilitres could mean the difference between a fabulous time and a tube down your throat helping you breathe.

None of this is to say that ecstasy is harmless. The scientific literature on ecstasy links it to a number of acute harms, especially to the brain, but it rarely results in death on its own.

There will be those who think any attempt to distinguish between these two drugs is mere trivia because all illicit drugs are dangerous. It is true that the best way to minimise the risks of drugs is to steer clear of them. The second best way is to be as informed as possible about the risks associated with the drug you are consuming and take appropriate precautions.

My experience in the emergency room that night - watching one drunk guy get tied to the bed to stop him ripping out his tubes, hearing another scream abuse at the doctors and nurses trying to help him - reminded me that this is just as true of alcohol as it is of illicit drugs.

And when it comes to damaging your brain, nothing is quite as efficient as being punched in the face.

Hmmm, very different to what I'm used to reading about drugs in the paper... Interesting

umm the reporter claims its hard to know how much of the drug you have taken - it's piss easy, everyone uses medical oral dosing syringes to dose, so you KNOW how much you've taken, you dont just open the cap and take a sip hoping its not too much

Shitty drug anyway, it's just a sedated drunk feeling, alcohol is more fun and infinitely less effort.

One of my favorite drugs, but i haven't touched it in quite a while...

The fact that this article is reasonably unbiased and factual is actually a bit unnerving!

Heh, an unbiased article.

"The second best way is to be as informed as possible about the risks associated with the drug you are consuming and take appropriate precautions."
If only the government agreed with this. The main reason overdoses happen is due to user error. Hopefully this article will get around and make people think about what they're doing.

can I just say wow. this reporter actually has some sort of idea about what hes talking about. I bet in his past he has tried MDMA and loved it, and is defending it :)

Try 2ml on the dot as a single dose.

nothing else.

I would give you my house if you have the same opinion an hour after that.

(providing you had no other drugs, had a nice sleep)

and if you did it in a park at sunrise, and still think its a waste of time.... i would give you 3 houses.

thats how good it can be.

the most natural feeling, human high you can get.

I disagree. I tried 2ml on my first dose and it was pretty good.

After that it was never as good at any dose.
Never bothered with it since.
Different people though.

i wouldn't call a g high human at all, it brings out the absolute worst in people, it removes far too many of the barriers we set in place to protect ourselves in it's disinhibition. And i feel there inlies the problem.

Honestly, G is one of the drugs that just pulls the lust out of me - and i wanna fuck any chick i can see, and will do it if given the chance. And i'm nothing like that straight.

Hahaha thats the only thing i luved about GHB. Makes u horny as hell but only while ur peaking. Too me that crap just feels like i am drunk. Its not as wide spread in Europe, no one not even my daily drug munching mates knew about it and its legal there. I guess if its illegal people want it, if its legal then no one does it. People want what they cant have, this is what i have learnt.

This is the main reason I am considering trying it. can you go into a bit more detail. Does it just make you really horny or does it heighten sexual pleasure and orgasm?

Yeah well, I can control myself (just) as i am a commited relationship. Just concentrate on the flora and fauna. OR even better, just do it with YOUR gf or b/f.

I aint said its a 'party drug' if def isnt. you need to use it in a way you would do a trip. The right spot, the right location and you will visit the majic juice land....is tim burton esque.

Really? hm. I don't know much about GHB but my understanding was that it is a party drug. One day I'll have to try it......

Do you find it inteferes with maintaining an erection? MDMA always does that to me.. sigh :|
