An Australian soldier is in a serious condition after a suspected drug overdose at his base in Tarin Kowt in Afghanistan.

A bottle of pills and a white powder, believed to be opiates, were found in the commando's quarters, the chief of the Australian Defence Force, Angus Houston, told a media conference in Canberra today.

"It would appear at this early stage that the use of illicit drugs may be involved in this incident," Air Chief Marshal Houston said.

"He remains in a serious condition in an unconscious state and is being closely monitored by medical staff."

Air Chief Marshal Houston said his prognosis for recovery remained "uncertain".

The experienced commando, who was discovered in his room last Friday, is being treated at a military hospital in Germany.

The soldier is a private in the Special Operations Taskforce, Air Chief Marshal Houston said.

Air Chief Marshal Houston said there would be an investigation into a function that occurred the night before the soldier was found.

The unit's commander allowed the soldiers to have a function to celebrate their return from operations against the Taliban and alcohol was consumed.

"I can tell you that, while the investigation is ongoing and no findings are yet available, a bottle of pills and separately white powder thought to be an opiate were found in the soldier's room," Air Chief Marshal Houston said.

"However, I stress to you that analysis and medical testing to confirm the exact nature of the substance and whether it may have caused or contributed to his condition is ongoing."

The other members of the soldier's unit were being tested for the use of illicit drugs, he said.

"My thoughts and prayers are with the soldier and his family during this very difficult time," he said.

"His family have asked for privacy at this time and I ask everybody to respect that," he said.

The ADF has a zero-tolerance policy regarding the use of illicit drugs.

I reckon you'd need something along the lines of opiates to remain on a post in that region of the world.... :\

Interesting that they avoid the big bad 'H' word.

No doubt.

Wouldn't be surprised if he was drugged up on opiates to numb the feeling of fighting in a war zone, or else he was maybe using it as a sleep aid.

Or the fact that 90% of the worlds heroin comes from afghanistan. It's like candy there. Troops arn't allowed to lay a finger on farmers who grow poppies as they're trying to 'win the hearts and the minds of the people'. There whole economy is based on the H trade atm. 600 tonnes got stopped last year at the Iranian border - so imagine what go through!.

Its well known that drug use is RIFE withing the military..

Especially over there! My dads mate is very high up and recently returned with heaps of footage and photos of a range of things. Some fucked up shit..

and some AMAZING SHIT! Like miles and miles and miles and miles of poppy fields and HUGE MARIJUANA plantations

and heaps of natural pot just growing EVERYWHERE! haha its crazy..

So trust me... soldiers are constantly picking buds and shit and smoking up every chance they can get... and the gov lets them. They dont give a shit.. they are there for them to make money and get the oil.. so if they need drugs, let em have em!

Hell SOLDIERS bring back heroin into the states and other countrys...under the govs watch and ORDERS!

This to me is really painting a different image other than soldiers consuming drugs. Sure there would be recreational drug consumption but the bigger picture regards soldiers using these drugs to cope with certain events which they have experienced while in combat. Does the government provide adequate health funding and solutions to these individuals?

I had a friend in my old street who I would hear at night screaming in his dreams supposedly due to his encounter with enemy soldiers in the Vietnam War. After years of him just walking to get his paper and nothing else I started talking to him and after a while he told me him and a fellow soldier were engaged in combat with the enemy, his friend next to him was shot in the head and died. The enemy pushed past their location and he was left to kill them. In another location he killed a child with his knife who was keeping guard for the enemy at night.

This guy was just abandoned by the government when he returned, now mind you that was a long time ago and hopefully things have changed, but it's easy for the fat cats to say don't do this don't do that when they're the ones sitting in the comfort of their fortified country...

Man, if you expect people to go fight your battles for you on the other side of the bloody planet the least you could do is let them use a little opiates in their down time. Seriously like, what the fuck else is there to do? I imagine the combined factors of extreme boredom and PTSD would drive a lot of soldiers towards drug use, I don't imagine the choices in Afhanistan are too varied.

I disagree, they have one of the most dangerous jobs out there and the lives of their mates depends on them. They should be clean.

They should be clean but they're not so the question we ask is why are they turning to these substances? As I said of course there is the recreational percentage but there are soldiers consuming certain substances for other purposes.

Static mind, I agree that they shouldn't be nodding out on duty but I don't see why their occupation dictates they shouldn't be allowed to do recreational drugs ever. Obviously it is unacceptable for someone to be nodding out on their guard post or whilst driving an APC, it is quite different to hit a nod in the evening or day off/weekends.

Day off/weekend in a warzone?

Cherish the thought!

How often do you hear of insurgents mounting huge attacks against our military bases? They do pussy ass, sneaky ambushes on the sides of the road and shit. You seem to be suggesting that soldiers have no down time and should be ready for combat at all times, I have spoke to numerous former and currently serving soldiers who disagree.

Well said bro, when your on the FOB (forward operating base) your pretty much waiting for the mortars to come at all times... It's not like we play video games all day or something haha

If they tested our troops routinely they'd find plenty of positive drug results. Speaking from experience.....

I've got a few family members in the army and a couple who have served in Iraq.

All of them have said the boredom and fear of sudden death is the worst thing. Does it really surprise you that drug use is high when they are constantly bored out of their brains and know they could die at any moment?

I also imagine it would be quite painful to be separated from the ones you love for long stretches of time.....

Opiate use can be just as much about emotional pain, as well as physical pain.....

Haha exactly, sometimes they even freeze the mortars inside the tubes in big ass blocks and set them up near base and wait for the ice to melt and send the mortars, that way we can't react to it because the threat has been gone for HOURS...
