POLICE have arrested 65 people for drug-related offences at a Melbourne dance music festival
Officers with drug sniffer dogs pulled festival-goers out of the line up to enter the sold-out Parklife festival in Birrarung Marr today.

All of the offenders received cautions for carrying small amounts of drugs.

Acting Senior Sergeant Don Brown said the police activity wasn't meant to ruin anyone's day but make sure everyone was safe at an event with 17,000 people attending.

Fifty-three people were caught with drugs at last year's Parklife festival.

More than 60 people attending a Melbourne dance music festival have been arrested for drug-related offences.

Police dogs, with the help of their trainers, have been have targeting patrons trying to smuggle drugs into the sold-out Parklife festival at in Birrarung Marr in Melbourne's CBD.

A total of 65 people were arrested for carrying drugs such as ecstasy, cannabis, amphetamine and cocaine.

Most of the those who had drugs seized were dealt with by diversion programs which require the them to undergo counselling.

Acting Senior Sergeant Don Brown has been happy with the behaviour of the crowd but says dancegoers will be closely monitored as they leave the festival.

"The crowd has been quite placid and well behaved, but we are disappointed with the number of people found in possession of illicit substances," Acting Sen Sgt Brown said.

"It has also been an excellent job by the Dog Squad and the members in support, with an impressive amount of detections recorded."

He said the crowds exiting the venue on Saturday night will be closely monitored by police.

That means anyone with drugs still on them when they leave to go to after partys will have dogs waiting for when they leave ...

I wonder how many BL's went there today and got through ok & wonder how they will go when they leave ..

I suggest anyone who has friends there at the moment to call them or sms them & tell them dogs may be waiting for them outside. At the moment it is 9:15 pm and the venue closes at 10pm so you still got time.

Fucking dogs eh. Its always a shame to hear of so many people being busted for just tryin to have a good time. It seems they didn't bust any traffickers because usually they will mention the one or two people they caught with 100 or so pills just so it seems more like they have achieved anything. (which they haven't)

Its pretty lame if u ask me. Im really wondering how much does it cost to do all this for them?

Haha mate got picked up there with 20 round ones and a gram of louie... Ah well...

Having dogs outside afterwards is just fucking low!

SIXTY five party goers were arrested for drug-related offences at a major Melbourne dance festival today.

Police with sniffer dogs were out in force at the sell-out Parklife party at Birrarung Marr.

Acting Sen Sgt Don Brown said police seized cannabis, amphetamines and gamma-hydroxybutyrate, known as GBH or grievous bodily harm.

Those arrested, mostly men in their early 20s, were questioned by police and given diversion orders without conviction, he said.

Acting Sen Sgt Brown said the operation involving 50 police and four dogs was from noon to 6pm.

About 17,000 people attended the festival.

Metropolitan Ambulance Service spokesman Ray Rowe said there were no overdoses.

65-odd people who most likely would never have had any sort of run-in with the law now have their names in police files. Good work. :|

I wonder if most of those people were careless or just unlucky.. next time i guess they'll just drop everything before they go in :/

I didn't go this year.. it's becoming too risky for myself to warrant trying.

I did however goto another arts/music/culture festival 'Earthdance' that same weekend.. which was 3 1/2 hours out of Perth at the wheatbelt, and to my shock they had cops pulling cars off the road just before the entry point asking us to get out and pat our clothes down, and then proceed to run a sniffer dog through our entire car.

Quite a few people got busted for charges ranging from small possession to supply quantities, mainly Ecstasy, Marijuana and LSD. I just couldn't believe they had a dog so far out for a music event that is hardly known.

they didn't have any that i saw at the free earthdance in melbourne.

lol 65 ppl out of 17,000, and not ONE of them had enuf to be considered traficking. pretty pathetic if u ask me coppas.

oh well i guess we'll let them shine on in the papers giving eachother high fives for a job well done. nice one! for pete's sake i reckon i could sniff out more drugs than they did

Maybe more people took undetectable drugs this year because they knew Mr. Plod and his puppy dogs would be there...

malakaix- expect more random shit like that in the future. Currently the user is winning the war on drugs and that makes police attempts look futile. No one likes to lose so they're pulling out everything they can. You were easy targets that far out because they knew no one would be expecting it.

Too bad the dogs can't detect 4-mmc. There were a LOT of pills being flogged off which I believe to be full of it. 90% of people were walking around chewing their faces off and were destroyed before sunset.

I didn't see any dogs on exit.

no chance of getting done my dogs if you just jump over a fence to get in. haha.

CBD festival offers drugs fix

JANAE HOUGHTON

MORE than 65 people were caught with drugs such as ecstasy and cocaine at a Melbourne music festival yesterday.

While police were generally pleased with the behaviour of the crowd at the Park Life festival at Birrarung Marr, they were disappointed so many festival-goers were caught with illicit drugs, including cannabis and amphetamines.

Police were out in force, using their ''passive-alert detection dogs''.

Rather than charging people they arrested, police offered counselling to many from whom drugs were confiscated.

Only one of those arrested by police, a man in his 20s, was interviewed for trafficking a drug of dependence.

Acting Senior Sergeant Don Brown, of the Melbourne regional response unit, was dismayed that so many people had drugs on them.

"The crowd has been quite placid and well behaved, but we are disappointed with the number of people found in possession of illicit substances.

''It has also been an excellent job by the dog squad and the members in support, with an impressive amount of detections recorded,'' he said.

Ambulance paramedics treated more than 80 people throughout the event, many of them drug and alcohol-affected.

Brett Aimers, of St John Ambulance, said his crews were treating people for dehydration, intoxication and collapsing. ''It's hard to estimate how many were drug-affected, but most were probably a combination of alcohol and drugs,'' he said.

Late last night three people had been taken to hospital but none for drug-related illnesses. Police said they would closely monitor people leaving the venue.

Phew, thank god the cops got those people. I know I feel safer. I'd much prefer they just got rotten drunk and beat the shit out of me on the way home, rather than cause no trouble whatsoever.

Still, I do feel sorry for them, in all seriousness, I've had off-record chats with cops during my time in events, and they all agree they'd much prefer kids get fucked up on pills than drunk.

^^^^ I wonder if the dude who got interviewed for trafficking is someone I know of

Not unlikely, hmmmm interesting!
