SA is nation's drug lab capital

AMPHETAMINE laboratories are uncovered in South Australia at a rate double the national average.

The alarming statistic has saddled the state with a reputation as the drug lab capital of Australia.

A database set up by the Australian Crime Commission also shows that, per capita, there are more of the highly dangerous clandestine laboratories found here than in any other state or territory.

Police say a jump in the number of drug labs in Adelaide homes in recent years has contributed to the alarming figures, released by the commission last week.

Police figures also show that the number of labs detected in the state soared from 25 in 2004/05 to 65 last financial year.

The officer in charge of the Drug Investigation Branch, Detective-Superintendent Scott Duval, said the ability of criminals to "do amphetamine cooking without a high level of knowledge means there are more people out there doing it".

"In our experience, there are more people attempting this, which is a concern because there is more risk of something going wrong and greater risk of explosions, fire and danger to the community," he said.

Criminologists believe organised crime gangs could be targeting SA as a "safe" place to produce amphetamine before exporting it interstate.

Adelaide University criminology lecturer Allan Perry said the commission's figures showed SA had around 20 per cent of the drug labs detected in the nation but less than 10 per cent of Australia's population.

"And I suspect the number of clandestine labs detected is a small proportion of the number of drug labs that exist," Mr Perry said.

"The obvious possibility is there is more drug lab activity in SA, which is why there is a higher level of detection. It may be that people engaged in this activity believe SA is a safer place to engage in it."

Flinders University Associate Professor in Environmental Health John Edwards, who is investigating the prevalence of drug labs in the state, said the amphetamines produced here "could end up interstate".

"There could be such restrictions in terms of policing and the risk of being captured interstate that SA is seen as a safer state to produce the drugs and then they are exported," he said.

Illegal labs producing amphetamines - known by street names such as speed, ice, whiz and goey - are found in homes across Adelaide, including blue-ribbon addresses, according to Supt Duval.

"We had a recent significant bust in Unley . . . and had one at Mawson Lakes where we had to clear residents from other townhouses because they were at threat," he said.

Supt Duval said the backyard labs were highly unstable and could explode or catch fire, posing a risk not only to the manufacturers but also innocent neighbours.

The crime commission said its new National Clandestine Laboratory Database "has been created to provide the most comprehensive picture of the manufacture of illicit drugs in Australia".

And it's a disturbing picture for our state. There was one drug lab detected for every 23,000 South Australians in 2007/08.

This is significantly higher than the national average of one lab for every 60,000 people.

It's also well ahead of the next closest state for drug lab detection, Queensland, which recorded one amphetamine lab for every 35,000 people.

In New South Wales, the rate of detection was one in 138,000.

Supt Duval said good policing with the help of public tip-offs had also contributed to the high number of drug lab busts in SA.

"We get a very good level of information from the public and we have a strong focus on organised crime as there is no doubt outlaw motorcycle gangs are involved in illicit drug manufacturing and trade," he said.

The number of people requiring treatment for amphetamine abuse was also on the rise, with latest SA Drug and Alcohol Service figures showing a dramatic increase from 937 people in 2001/02 to 1655 in 2006/07.

While SA Ambulance doesn't have any official statistics on the subject, the Ambulance Employees Association says paramedics are called to around 20 incidents involving amphetamine abuse across Adelaide every weekend and these could sometimes turn violent.

"There certainly has been an exponential increase in cases - especially since 2005 - which generally reflects the community's increased use of these drugs," association industrial officer Wayne Carty said.

The World Drug Report 2009, released last month, shows amphetamines in Australia and New Zealand trigger more treatments per capita than anywhere else in the world.

Would never have expected a drug lab in Unley or Mawson Lakes.

Not surprised though, I've always suspected that a significant amount of gear here is local product.

Yeah most of it is, quite easy to tell as well.
It's shitter than gear you'll get any where else mostly.

Why can't they cook up something different.

You can't as such, but on the few occasions I've used meth in the eastern states it's always been very high quality crystal, with the lower quality stuff usually cut and sold as speed, while in adelaide even the expensive smokeable stuff often comes in odd consistancies, either damp, unusually colored, or crumbly and powdery, which make it look like it wasn't very well cooked

The impression I've always been under is that a lot of the really good, clean crystalline stuff is imported and generally not produced locally.

I was under the impression that QLD was the biggest drug manufacturer in Aus but there you go. It doesn't sound like a good thing anyway from what crankinit and jakeperson have to say.

Without discussing specific prices do you guys find that the Adelaide made gear goes cheaper than imported clear shards?

Generally yeah, you'll pay maybe 60 - 80% for the shoddy looking stuff a lot of of the time.

That's not to say it's all bad, I've had some stuff that looked horrible but ended up being some of the best I've ever tried, and there's still plenty of clean shards floating around.

The more I think about it the more this makes sense. In Melbourne I only ever come across speed or shards and theyr are pretty much the same price and regardless of difference in quality and appearance most of the time speed is speed and shard is shard.

I used to have a workmate who was a big ice head who moved to Melbourne from Adelaide, he said back in Adelaide he used to use what was sold as "meth" and it was in between speed and ice in price and quality. I guess this explains that.

Yeah there isn't as much differentiation between speed and ice. People will just refer to it as 'gear' or 'meth', and it goes for anywhere from the more expensive speed in the east states to the usual price for good shards.

Oh the quality itself isn't that bad. A little hit and miss, much like anywhere, I was referring more to the consistancy of the product. It's often damp/crumbly/pasty/colored/whatever, whereas that kind of product on the east coast was usually cut down and sold as speed to the uneducated masses.

I always found the quality as a whole in Adelaide better than Melbourne for many years.

Maybe this has changed in the last year or 2 but as always i think it comes down to who you know.

An old friend used give me Adelaide gear (he called it meth) which was pasty/gooey off white crystal, double the strength of common vic speed and on average, 30% cheaper back in 03-05

It smoked up better than most Melb shard i have sampled in the past 18 months

yeah. melb shard of late has been turrrrrrrible.
for the most part, tiny insignificant crystals.
some greedy people haven't even had the decency to cut the product properly, it's like theyve just crushed up some caff and added it to the bag to add weight. rather than melting and resetting it properly.

managed to get my hands on some stuff from SA late last year, shat all over anything i've gotten since probably june 08.
and it was 2/3 the cost of melb gear...

From what i can gather across a wide circle of friends, Melb shard has been increasingly good in recent months.

Once again it's who you know but i have heard it from separate crews who aren't connected in any way.

The ephedrine/pseudo ephedrine and even some shard is getting imported (plenty of Canadian crystal getting busted in the post) and the gear has gotten close to what it was in the mid 00's.

And still i get hounded like some sort of FUCKING CRIMINAL when i went to pick up cold and flu tablets for a sick friend today! Tablets that contain a measly 30mg of pseudo each (what cook would fuck around with paracetamol and dxm for 30mg of pseudo?).

I bit my tongue but wanted to go on a rant so bad when i knew they were trying to work out if i was a pseudo runner or not 8)

I contacted old mate in Adelaide and he says nothing much has changed. Same gear, possibly better and same price but no shards to speak of.
