NEWS : 18.01.10 - Police reject claims of Big Day 'ambush'

^ There didn't seem to be too many overly drunk people at Summafieldayze. Can anyone confirm how much the drinks there were? I heard someone say they were over $10 for a smirnoff premix or pure blonde (both the mid strength variety). Maybe the mid strength thing combined with ludicrous prices is working?

I saw heaps of empty plastic smirnoff bottles at BDO so there was a fair bit being smuggled in though.

Look, 75 drug arrests with 55,000 - you could hardly say it is a drug fest.

I also saw hundreds of empty baggies and dozens of empty legal high baggies on the ground so a few people were getting past the sniffer dogs it seems.

46*C in the pit
Yeh i think I sweated off a kilo or two in the boiler room in the evening!!!

You speak as though that's the first time someone has died from ecstasy (you may be referring to first BDO drug-related death, I wouldn't know figures on that) and that in your opinion validates the police doing there job (somewhat) - fair enough. But why only in Perth? I'm pretty sure people have died from taking drugs in other cities, so precedents have been set there too, just not at BDO specifically.

I think you may have mis understood what I ment. The girl with Perth panicked and the sight or mere rumor of police drug dogs and to evade detection she at all her drugs at once. People have died from XTC before that is true but this was the first death where the police presence was the reason for the high drug intake. Heaps of people had predicted that someone would eat all their drugs at once when they saw the dog's and then it happend.

If this was in my workplace and after repeated warnings someone died then workplace health and safety would have someone thrown in jail. However this is the police vrs drug users......apperently acceptable to have a 17yo girl die.

That's why iv no respect for these drug dogs handlers. Just doing your job isn't an excuse when your playing with peoples lives.

Dunno where to take this from here. Wish I could do more but iv no ideas.

They are just doing their jobs though. It's the politicians making stupid laws and overzealous police commissioners/ministers sending out the orders to bring these dogs to music festival entries, club lines etc that are actually to blame. In their heads they're doing society some great justice by removing these "deadly" drugs from people with personal quantities going out to have some fun. When in reality they're achieving nothing and only causing harm, as you said, that 17 year old girl died due to fear of being 'caught'.

I have no doubt that some, perhaps many of the average police officers realise how futile and potentially dangerous (even fatal) what they do in regard to catching drug users can be with sniffer dogs. They would deal with drugs all year and must realise they're not going away, if they don't, well they must be really quite ignorant.

Having a near possession miss with about 7 policemen, I thought I would raise this topic. Those seven were the opposite to what you just said. Unfortunately a lot of people are happy to blindly follow their orders and believe every thing they are told.

Sustanon, I was only planning on a few cold beers here and there in the heat. Definitely won't be paying $10 for light beer.

Belarki, at Summadayze here drinks ranged from $9.50-$13.50

Oh, I didn't mean they'd let you off if they searched and found drugs on you or not bother with looking for people like that, thats still their job afterall and they'd want to look good in their superiors eyes by catching users and taking drugs off the streets etc. I've been done for possession before and had many close calls, what I just meant was, deep down they must realise it's all futile at the end of the day. But I don't mean for a second that means that's going to change their actions. I've had cops search my car and been with friends when they've searched their cars several times all because they were desperate to find drugs in there. Cops do vary in their attitudes though and how friendly they treat you, I've experienced them at both ends of the scale. Bit offtopic.

Also, $10 for a light-beer? /facepalm

Actually all I had on me was an empty baggie with Mephedrone residue. As I knew that charging me was pretty much pointless and I had nothing on me I struck up a discussion along those lines.

Apparently any one who does drugs is the scum of the earth, no matter what. ( According to them)

Drink prices at Gold Coast Big Day Out were $6 for a mid (TED 3.5% "Festival Release" - looks like a regular TED if you aren't careful) or light beer. $6 for a shot of spirits and mixer. or $8 for premix 3.5% spirits can. So the prices aren't terrible, but not being able to drink full strength beer does suck. I tried, but could not get drunk at all - you'd have to pretty much set up camp next to the bar. Plenty of people smuggled in alcohol though (and drugs, of course). I also saw far less cops there this year than there were last year. Interestingly enough, I saw far fewer incidents (fights etc.)

I wonder what percentage of people actually consume drugs at this festival? I'm assuming it would be lower than usual considering it isn't an 18+ event but still catching 75 out of the possible 1000s is a horrible figure. I have yet to hear reports on any drug related health problems (ODing etc.) so far so what was the point of that whole operation? Australia is breeding a state whereby people hate the police more than ever.

I've done crowdcare at the Sydney leg of the tour for a few years and its pretty bad. 1

I can you I did once have to radio in st Johns first aid at 11:30am one year (I looked at my watch thinking fuck the first act of the day hasn't even finished) for some kid who looked 16/17 that was ODing!!!

yes there will be sniffers at the Sydney one. There has been for practically the last 10yrs. You have been warned.

Any chance we might be able to get a copy of this online somehow?

Sorry, I didn't get a copy. My wife saw a pile of these while backstage . I'll try to find out what was used, and if they were distributed.

It was most likely the rumor of detection dogs considering that they were only present at the train stations and not at the festival.

Chances are they will be there. Safer to assume they will, whether they will be or not.

Wouldn't be too great to end up with charges because some one over the net told you, you'd be right.

75 outa 55,000 is fucken good, fuck those sniffer dogs.

alot of people are just popping beforehand, i wudnt wait till i got to a fest where i know dogs arew gonna be there sniffing around, and then pop my illicits.

i think im gonna start taking acid to festivals, :D

yeah, acid is the way to go. I was more concerned with a lingering bud smell that may be present on my hands, clothes or even hair i guess. Being stripped searched in the midst of an acid trip doesn't seem too fun to of. I guess i'll just have to be extra hygenic before hand :)

That is always my fear. I know I can avoid detection with some substances, but the smell of weed on me would be a dead give away.
