ALBURY police fear a bad batch of liquid ecstasy may have killed one person on the Border and be responsible for the hospitalisation of four others.
Police are warning revellers to beware after fearing a reported drug overdose at Culcairn late last night may have been linked to the batch.
Last night’s overdose followed the hospitalisation of four people in Albury on Wednesday night, two of whom remain in induced comas yesterday.
“Albury drug unit is warning the community about a bad batch of what is believed to be liquid ecstasy currently circulating in the Albury area,” Albury Insp Lynelle Rodwell said.
“The four hospitalised on Wednesday night, two men and two women, were admitted to Albury Base Hospital after mixing the drug with alcohol and drinking it.
“Three of the four people were intubated (involving the introduction of a tube into a hollow organ or airway) and in intensive care as a result of taking the drug.
“Two of those people remain in a serious condition in an induced coma in the intensive care unit.”
Meanwhile, Insp Rodwell said a man was arrested yesterday in relation to the supplying of the drug.
The Albury man, 36, has been charged with four counts of supplying a prohibited drug and was yesterday refused bail.
He will appear in Albury Local Court today.
The Australian Drug Foundation says liquid ecstasy is different to ecstasy.
It’s website says liquid ecstasy is gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB): also known as grievous bodily harm (GBH) or fantasy.
Unlike ecstasy, it is a depressant drug that has sedative and anaesthetic effects.
At small doses, it can cause euphoria, increased enjoyment of movement and music, increased libido, increased sociability and intoxication.
At higher doses, it may induce nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, agitation, depressed breathing, unconsciousness and death.
