Liquid ecstasy death feared

ALBURY police fear a bad batch of liquid ecstasy may have killed one person on the Border and be responsible for the hospitalisation of four others.

Police are warning revellers to beware after fearing a reported drug overdose at Culcairn late last night may have been linked to the batch.

Last night’s overdose followed the hospitalisation of four people in Albury on Wednesday night, two of whom remain in induced comas yesterday.

“Albury drug unit is warning the community about a bad batch of what is believed to be liquid ecstasy currently circulating in the Albury area,” Albury Insp Lynelle Rodwell said.

“The four hospitalised on Wednesday night, two men and two women, were admitted to Albury Base Hospital after mixing the drug with alcohol and drinking it.

“Three of the four people were intubated (involving the introduction of a tube into a hollow organ or airway) and in intensive care as a result of taking the drug.

“Two of those people remain in a serious condition in an induced coma in the intensive care unit.”

Meanwhile, Insp Rodwell said a man was arrested yesterday in relation to the supplying of the drug.

The Albury man, 36, has been charged with four counts of supplying a prohibited drug and was yesterday refused bail.

He will appear in Albury Local Court today.

The Australian Drug Foundation says liquid ecstasy is different to ecstasy.

It’s website says liquid ecstasy is gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB): also known as grievous bodily harm (GBH) or fantasy.

Unlike ecstasy, it is a depressant drug that has sedative and anaesthetic effects.

At small doses, it can cause euphoria, increased enjoyment of movement and music, increased libido, increased sociability and intoxication.

At higher doses, it may induce nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, agitation, depressed breathing, unconsciousness and death.

There has never been a liquid ecstasy and people need to know this !!!

ask Phase Dancer ... It's forms are a hci salt or a crystal base ...

but in all my 12 years of being in the scene I have never ever seen it in a liquid form ....

If anyone offeres you a liquid E then punch them in the face ... its gbh/gbl and has similar effects in small doses and takes like 2 hours to kick in and this is why people will die from the shit cause they think it's not working or they didnt take enough .. so they drink more and more ..

Fucking stupid cops, why speculate on what the drug could be when you have no clue, it never ceases to amaze me how much fkn misinformation floats around because of the media.

True, i have never ever heard it called that and am a regular at the nightclub its probably used most at in melb. Although effects are usually felt within 10 minutes, certainly with ghb and 1,4b (gbl may have slightly longer) But your point is right, once it wears off you are still intoxicated by it much after the effects 'seem' too have warn off. People need too be very carful with this drug.

I don't where that term originated from, but it's been around almost since GHB first became popular in the dance scene. As kingpin007 indicated, MDMA normally comes as the hydrochloride salt which is normally in either crystal or powder form, or tablets containing the salt.

The freebase is a liquid but that is rarely if ever sold on the street, for several reasons;
1) 1mL is roughly equal to 1g of powder/ crystal etc
2) difficulty in handing, measuring doses, wastage etc
3) bioavailability - salt being far preferred for oral administration

Despite the oddness of it, I have seen MDMA which came in a solution. Once in Qld, around 00, small sections of drinking straws, sealed at both ends, were sold locally. These contained a brown liquid which was claimed by experienced users to be MDMA. This could have been done simply because the product had become wet, or there could have been more to it. iirc, this form was also seen in another state.

As for why G drugs were being called liquid E, perhaps it was originally a marketing tactic or perhaps it was coined by users themselves who liked the sound of it? When we were looking into getting harm reduction into nightclubs on the GC some years ago - where G was very popular - almost everyone we spoke to knew G drugs only as liquid E or by the equally incorrect term GBH (grievous body harm).

I find it somewhat difficult to believe any kind of liquefied MDMA would be making its way 'round rural victoria.... somehow....

get a clue, takes like 2 mins to kick in...

unless you have a liver difenciency,

^^

get a clue ...? WTF ???

The effects can take anywhere between 10 minutes and an hour to kick in !!!!

so me saying that it takes like 2 hours to kick in is true and it's these people who are dieing from taking too much.

EVERYONE is different and drugs can affect us quicker or slower !!!! age, gender, weight and so on all change the way a drug may affect you especially this shit.

How many people have died from this stuff in the last 12 months ... a fair few in england and now we are seeing the bad side here ... people consuming drugs who don't understand them and dieing ... all because the stuff can take an hour more to work thus thinking oh I will take more and then the nights over for them.

Also how many people know that drinking alcohol whilst on gbl/gbh is going to fuck your liver over and surely send you to hospital ... this shit is crap and I will never consume it but my friends seem to like it ... go figure ..

Woman fights for life

THE head of the emergency department at Albury Base Hospital says Wednesday night’s quadruple liquid amphetamine overdose was the worst case of its kind in the city for at least a year.
One woman is fighting for her life in the intensive care unit while the other three, a woman and two men, have been discharged after taking a drug known as liquid ecstasy.

Police fear the drug may be part of a larger batch that is circulating in the community.

The four were admitted at 9.35pm suffering from a range of symptoms, including seizures, foaming at the mouth, muscle spasms and facial flushing, and one needed to be physically restrained by orderlies immediately.

Throughout the next few hours, another needed to be restrained while all three required intubation and another ventilation assistance.

“That’s the biggest illicit drug overdose we’ve had here for at long time, at least a year,” director of emergency services Mike Taylor said.

“We also had another critical case that night, so it really did put a severe strain on our department.

“We had two night doctors, excellent doctors, and credit must go to our staff, doctors and nurses, who did such a good job.”

Emergency staff were also assisted by intensive care unit staff.

Dr Taylor said it was unclear how much of the drug had been taken by the four.

“No one knows really what they are taking,” he said.

“It’s all illicitly produced, mostly by motorcycle gangs and South East Asian gangs.

“It’s certainly a very, very nasty drug, certainly to be very much discouraged.

“Sometimes people are told it’s MDMA, but it may be something different.

“And MDMA is not at all safe, as sometimes thought, it has caused quite a lot of deaths over the years, some people have an enzyme deficiency in their liver and that can predispose them to death from it.”

Dr Taylor said liquid ecstasy cases were rare in Albury.

“I haven’t personally seen much around Albury,” he said.

“But one million Australians over 14 have used ecstasy (in some form) once, so it’s no doubt around.

“It seems, especially, it’s young girls dying of ecstasy overdoses all the time.”

He said negative symptoms included uncontrolled teeth clenching, blurred vision, chills and sweating.

“People need to drink plenty of fluid ... if they have taken it and regret it and feel unwell, drink lots and lots of water and call the ambulance immediately,” he said.

Meanwhile, Albury police yesterday said a drug overdose in Culcairn on Thursday night did not involve the bad batch of liquid ecstasy as initially believed.

Guests offered "prawn syrup"
The curcumstances that led to four people being admitted to hospital on wednesday night were outlined in police facts in albury local court yesterday.

Magistrate Gordon Lere was told that Vaughan heath mcdonald was at his plummer st home with two friends and they decided to walk to dean st. They became aware of a party being held on olive st by two friends of mcdonalds partner. McDonald attended and asked a man present whether he wanted somthing to make him "party more". He went home with a bottle labeled "Prawn Syrup"

The man and two women went into the bedroom and a teaspoon was filled with brown liquid.

McDonald advised: "dont let it touch your tonsils, it has a foul taste and might make you spew". The liquid was ingested and McDonald asked who was next. One woman ingested a teaspoon of the liquid and the other said she wanted a small ammount. Another man also ingested some and a short time later all four collapsed outside the residence.

Ambulance and police were called and the four people taken to hospital. Three went into intensive care whrere they were sedated, incubated and put on life support machines. Det Sen Constable Mark McDonald from the albury drug squad said it was fortunate the people admitted to hospital got medical assistance as quickly as they did because it saved their lives. He said police were yet to identify the drug, but urine samples have been taken from the victims.

Sorry about the spelling in this one, i wrote this between pouring beers. Could not find an online article to quote.

I remember the term liquid e appearing around 94 when dealers started pushing it. It was simply a marketing ploy combined with misinformation of the media. GHB was first nicknamed 'euphoria' there were also lot of od's in QLD at the time. So customers were asking for e and being told by the dealer they had 'euphoria - which is basically liquid e'. They then od, told police/medical staff what they had, they tell the media, media reports it as liquid e.

I always thought Euphoria came from the Beverly Hills 90210 episode where they substituted the term "Euphoria" for "Ecstasy". I remember the dealer in a nightclub in the show had a big 4 on his shirt instead of a big E.

Thanks for that Metamorphyk, you learn something new everyday.

Really bad article, how are they qualified to call it a "bad batch"? It clearly states the 4 hospitalised people mixed suspected GHB/GBL/1.4B with alcohol, this is a dangerous practise and it is not surprising to me that this combo could put a few idiots in hospital.

it's happend on many occasions in the past. from raves and nightclubs to private houses and in the streets and on ocean liners, all over the place.
Thanks for the article kingpin, you sound like you know a fair bit and have a very big clue, shame that ibis had to chime in with his G dribble tho. Sounds like he needs to get a clue in life.
