News: 10 yr old in Ecstasy Overdose 16/07/2002

a lot of sane ppl wouldn't recommend ANYONE take drugs. Every time you swallow a pill you are taking a chance. That is WHY this site is here, so that ppl who are capable of making a choice about their drug use, can do so with as much knowledge about how to minimise the risks involved. Sure, we can test. But we all know (even if we don't admit it) that the tests we use are not fool proof. The thing that really gets to me is the apparant lack of willingness to call an ambulance to help the girl.
Does anyone know the policy in the UK as to whether police must be notified of drug overdoses when paramedics attend?

It seems very weird to me that she would just take these pills. Like has been mentioned, you've all tasted the things - they taste like shit. Once she ate one, I can hardly imagine her wanting another 5. Even if she thought they were painkillers or something, what 10yo child would eat 5 panadols?
Maybe it's the cynic in me, but if she had 5, I suspect it was with encouragement. If so, I hope they get strung up. ANYONE seeling to kids, IMHO, should have the book thrown at them.
 
In my opinion, whoever supplied the ecstasy to the Jade should be considered responsible. At the age of 10, some children still wet the bed... They simply can't be held responisble for their own actions, as they're far from mature enough to weigh up the risks, consequences, pros and cons of what they're doing.
Selling 5 pills to a 10 year old and not telling her not to take them all at once would be like selling someone a loaded gun, and not telling them which end the bullets come out of. Well said Sniff, I agree totally.

The overdose level for MDMA is 106.5mg/kg... There's a good possibility that the ecstasy she took was high quality, and if that was the case her body may well have not been able to deal with the MDMA, seeing as she was so young & thus probably not devleoped enough to process it...

The media is going to call it an overdose - that's because the word "overdose" looks good in a headline. The anti-drug people are going to use this death to their advantage - despite the fact that this is one death and people seem to die of all sorts of other unbanned things all the time. These arguements they use will not be rational, but that doesn't matter - the arguement has worked before and will work again - especially with a photo of a sweet looking child to put on their placards...
We all know that there are plenty of other issues and factors to this case - and that the drug probably only part of the blame - but ecstasy culture is going to have to take this one on the chin because as bad as it is that such a sad incident happened - the anti-drug media have just had all their christmases come at once with this story, and they're going to milk it for all it's worth...
So to everyone on bluelight that knows better - don't let this case get you all worked up...

Firstly, think about where that information would have come from.
Secondly... when you were a kid, did you run around eating random tablets because you thought they were sweets? Do you know anyone who did?

Very sad indeed.
I saw it on the news tonight. The reporter actually said the right things; "in that it is a tragic reminder that drugs, illegal or otherwise, should never be left in the hands of children, or where they can get them."
If she did obtain them herself, knowing she was taking ecstasy, then whoever she got them from should be jailed for a very long time.
If she found them and took them because she realised they were ecstasy with the nice colours and often childlike logos then its a tragedy due to MDMA's prohibition and subsequent meteoric rise in popularity; and all of the cultural consequences which derive from this. Who knows what a 10yr old girl may know of "ecstasy-culture", especially in Britain; and if she does know something chances are its extremely skewed and any scientific or health-related knowledge is of course absent.
If she simply found them and took them without knowing what they were then they could have been anything - morphine, valium, prozac etc and still killed her and hence its ridiculous to blame ecstasy.
Dont assume u cannot overdose on MDMA; personally 5 MDMA pills virtually at once for a 10yr girl is likely to kill her without question; her bodyweight, the stress on her organs, the fact that she never would have ingested such a substance before - i am no doctor but imo liver and renal failure would be extremely likely in such a case.
Any drug, especially one as powerful as MDMA, effect small children ENTIRELY differently than adults, especially in regards to how they effect the liver.
If the third case is indeed what happened i am curious as to how the law would treat a person who left an illegal substance like MDMA lying around versus leaving say prescribed morphine tablets around. The latter is actually more dangerous to a child, but something tells me the person with the MDMA may be in far more trouble than the patient on the morphine, above and beyond the factor of simply posessing the illegal substance. Who considers this fair?
 
Jakoz: Nope.. But a friend drank something in the science lab after being dared in year 7 or 8, and had to eat a bunch of charcole tablets and goto the hospital.

Call me naive, but I dont think anyone sold her them.
I have to say, anyone who thinks people would sell a nice ten year old girl ecstasy needs to seriously wonder where they get these ideas from.
The news reports here first said she thought they were sweets now they are saying pain killers.
I have to say, ive been in houses where people have left drugs around and had kids about, its sad but it happens and the chances of the children taking these drugs whatever they think they are are quite high especially if they have seen their parents doing it.
My dad also works in a primary school in a veyr bad area, one child once drew the drugs that were under his dads bed when told to draw a picture and his dad was arrested.

A lot of people here (including me) have seen kids this young pilling at underage events. It's fucked, but it does happen, so some people do sell pills to kids this young. It's fucked, huh?
We had a thread in Aus Social quite a while back with some of the worst examples that people here had seen, but I guess it got purged. :\

This is very very sad indeed. 10 year olds shouldnt have to die of anything, let alone e.
I think it more likely that she was nosing around in other ppls stuff when she found the tablets. No matter how well you think you have hidden any type of drugs, a kid that is set out to find something they arent supposed to is going to find something they arent supposed to.
my little sister almost died when she was 4 years old when she ate a few of my grandmas heart pills and had to be taken to hospital where she spent the day in ICU. they were very well hidden in drawers she was too short to reach, but she got to them anyway. They make the particular tablets very bitter and awful tasting because they look very lollie-like, but kids do stupid stuff and eat stupid things as well, im sure we all remember eating stuff as kids that we wouldnt dream of eating now.
think of the varieties of lollies we have today that look like pills. Advertisers are trying to target the XTC generation, but little kids eat life saver holes too, and finding something that looks like lollies, if you were young you would think they were lollies.
The occupants of the house should not have kept drugs on their premises if there was a chance of kids, any kids, of any age, coming around and playing at their house. Blaming dealers is stupid, would any dealer deal to a 10 year old? what 10 year old has enough money for 5 pills (even if they are cheap in the UK, which kid has that much money at 10?) and how the hell would a 10 year old know what they were taking and that it would make them feel like this and that? If someone gave them to her, then they should be made to eat their own brain.
its a very tragic accident, and if ecstasy is at all involved directly, then that just makes a tragic accident all that more tragic. Of course if ecstasy was not the cause of the girls death, then theres no way in hell that the media is going to retract such an *award winning* statement, its much more dramatic and anger/prejudice generating to say someone died of ecstasy than someone died of ratsak.
any day now expect your parents to pipe up and say those dirty murderous dealers killing 10 year old kids with drugs... blah blah... another successful misinformation project.

I find this story EXTREMELY hard to believe. Especally the part about the girl eating more than 1 pill - the things taste like shit, and I know that I couldn't swallow tablets whole until I was about 13. God the media print some absolute bullshit.
If the pill she *apparently* ate was MDMA, would it have killed her? If not, what would have happened to her? If the pill wasn't MDMA, what other chemical used in pills could have killed her??
 
I saw the coverage on this topic on Channel 9 News Tonight, and I must say this is a really sad thing to happen, especially to a 10 year old girl but it angers me that the media mainly focus attention on the fact that it was 'Ecstacy' which was the cause of the death. Rather than blaming the careless people who were supposed to be looking after the girl who were most probably also responsible for leaving the pills in plain view or in easy access to the child.
Nothing is going to bring this poor girl back, but this death could have been avoided if people just thought a little more.
My respect goes to this poor girls family, and i hope that the careless fool that caused this will think more in the future.
 
I am not going to say anything about anything else because honestly ive had enough of this tirade, but.... in the uk the actual amounts of contaminated pills with dangerous substances such as pma or whatever is so miniscule that I doubt if she did take pills that were sold as ecstasy then the chances that they were contaminated with something else which is dangerous i.e. pma is very very small.
But im in no way saying she took ecstasy or anything as I dont know.
 
I share your frustations mash... a lot of people here seem to know exactly what happened - heaven forbid we acknowledge that nobody still has any idea what really happened...
There's no sense in getting angry with the media. Getting angry is bad for one person only - you... it doesn't change anything...
The facts are, a 10 year old girl died. Whether she overdosed, died of water intoxication, ate the pills herself, was fed them by someone, ate 5, ate 1, ate 30, or ground them up and injected them, it really doesn't matter to the media. Ecstasy killed her - therefore ecstasy is evil.
 
I just read another newspaper, they were Ferraris and she found them upstairs in her house.
I would like to add if they are like the Ferraris which have flooded here in the past few months they are very tiny pills and I do actually think someone of that age could quite easily confuse pills of that size with a sweet all the same no one is still sure so :(
 
Just a thought...
I went into pillreports UK&Ireland and checked for ferraris.....all posts regardless of colour are fairly good pills, all being of the MDXX family.
And they reported she took upto 5....Most regular users cant handle that. :)

This year the quality of ferraris has been exceptional most came from one large batch which seemed to supply the country for the first few months of the year and a few are still cropping up every now and again.
I will add more info when I look at the research ive been doing on different stamps so far this year in the UK but I can safely say the large batch of very small ferraris which weighed about 160mg in total and were slightly domed underneath and available in blue and white with badly pressed logos were of very good quality in general.

And I find it exteremely hard to believe how people draw conclusions based on misreading media reports!
The reports say she possibly ate up to 5 pills. Meaning the people must have told the police there had been 5 pills somewhere in the house. On the news last night they said they found 4 pills in the house. So it sounds like she did only take 1 pill at this stage. So it is very possible that she thought it was a panadol or something, we don't know what container they were kept in. Maybe even a 24-7 container? ;)

when my sister was 5 years old she ate a pack of soem random painkiller or somethgin because she thought they where smarties, fortunetly her stomach was pumped and she is alive, but yes, children do go aroudn eatign random tablets
