Police warning on 'lethal' ecstasy

Police have warned Canberrans of the dangers of a potentially lethal batch of ecstasy discovered in two separate seizures.

The green-coloured pills, stamped with a Batman insignia, contain three chemicals which can cause overheating of the body, tissue damage and brain haemorrhage, particularly when taken together.

Police said the three chemicals, commonly known as MDMA, BZP and TFMPP were rarely found in the same tablet, but their impact could be deadly.

The officer in charge of ACT Policing's drug and alcohol policy, Detective Senior Constable Mark Battye, said the discovery was disturbing.

He said the two seizures of the tablets occurred in late May, one involving an alleged deal between two underage youths. Senior Constable Battye said while it was unclear whether this batch of ecstasy pills was still circulating in Canberra, the community needed to be aware of the danger.

''It is very rare to see tablets with these three chemicals together because those three chemicals react very dangerously with each other. We're warning the community to be very careful when taking ecstasy tablets.''

Senior Constable Battye said police had seen a small increase in the use of ecstasy.

Three people are before the courts in relation to the seizures.

I have said this many times ... MDMA in small amounts added with bzp will supercharge the mdma giving you a high and less mdma is needed per pill and will definately bring on serotonin syndrome but to the pill makers its a way of making more money and they dont care about your health.

This is the first time that the news/police have mentioned bzp and mdma pills and I am glad they have warned us and showed us photo of pill so we must thank them for this as usually they don't and well people get sick or die.

Reagent test a pill and look for fizzing and also taste test the pill for the bzp sour taste and the fizzing on the tongue... before consuming .. just because pill may test well dont mean shit anymore !!

people have died from mixing mdma and bzp -->

New Drug Turns Deadly When Mixed with Ecstasy

Benzylpiperazine, also known as Natural Ecstasy or BZP, is said to enhance a person’s sense of taste, sound, and color. It’s sold legally in the UK as a soil fertilizer, but when mixed with MDMA, or Ecstasy, it can be deadly.

Last May, Daniel Backhouse, a 22-year-old mortgage adviser from Sheffield, England, died after taking a pill of MDMA, not knowing it had been cut with BZP. “That is the problem when you take pills—they’re cut with anything. You never really know what you’re going to get. There’s no label on them,” said Harry Hopkinson, the friend who admitted giving Daniel the MDMA. Hopkinson also said he had never heard of BZP before.

Daniel had taken two to three pills of what friends assumed to be MDMA the day before he died while at a friend’s housewarming party. The next day, he was given another pill of MDMA by Hopkinson. Gregg Hunter, another friend, said Daniel started complaining that he was feeling too warm soon after taking the pill. “It was pretty sudden. He started shaking. He was trying to say things but he wasn’t making sense.” Another friend said he sounded like he was having an asthma attack. Daniel was driven to the hospital, and soon after was pronounced dead, despite attempts by medics to resuscitate him.

Dr. Alfreda Eugene Walker, who conducted the post-mortem examination of Daniel, said the combination of BZP and Ecstasy likely “caused an abnormal beat of the heart. Taking these drugs increases the heart rate and force of contractions. Your heart can tolerate that to a point but there comes a time when it can no longer cope.”

David Urpeth, Assistant Deputy Coroner of Sheffield, England, said there is a “significant chance” that more deaths will occur from BZP, which is “a new drug and a cause for concern.” Urpeth said that BZP is not deadly on its own, as it is only about a tenth the strength of Ecstasy, but that it “appears to cause death in conjunction with Ecstasy.” And since it is much less potent than Ecstasy, it’s likely that most people will use BZP to enhance the experience of MDMA.

Hopkinson was brought to court to testify about the incident, but it was decided that charges wouldn’t be brought against him. While there was evidence that Hopkinson had supplied the drugs, it was decided that it wasn’t in the public interest to prosecute him. Detective Sergeant John Fitzgibbons of South Yorkshire Police said, “He has to live with the fact that he supplied the drug that killed his very close friend…a court would not be able to impose any more punishment.”

While BZP cannot be sold legally in Australia and the US, the drug still poses a huge threat, especially since many people who use MDMA have no way of knowing what the drug they are taking has been cut with.

ACT Policing is issuing a warning to the public after two separate seizures of ecstasy, which were analysed and found to contain a dangerous mixture of substances.

The tablets were found to contain Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), Benzylpiperazine (BZP) and Trifluoromethylphenylpiperazine (TFMPP).

Overseas cases have shown that the combination of these three substances have can lead to serious illness and death in some cases.

In a case in Canberra in October 2008, a 24-year-old man was hospitalised after consuming two tablets, one of which contained MDMA, and the other containing BZP and TFMPP.

Detective Senior Constable Mark Battye, Coordinator of Drug and Alcohol Policy for ACT Policing said “Taking these types of pills may seem harmless at the time, however you simply don’t know what else is in these tablets.

“People taking these types of tablets are taking a big gamble with their health and their lives. The people making and selling these tablets don’t care, they just want money.

“These tablets may still be in circulation and were urge anyone who may sight these tablets being sold, or may know some who is selling them to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or via the website www.act.crimestoppers.com.au. It is also important to remind members of the public that they can remain anonymous when providing information through Crime Stoppers,” Detective Senior Constable Battye said.

I cant stress this ENOUGH to friends of mine.

I see alot of people on pipes.. come down and then actively search for more (sometimes finding MDMA pills) and it scares the shit out of me. Education is KEY with this.. the more that people know how disastrous mixing the two chemicals are the more actively aware they will be. Half the people i mention pipes too dont even know what it is, let alone that mixing it with MDMA can be lethal.

How dangerous is it really though? I understand the piperzine deaths have been in a mix with MDMA but afaik the death count is still pretty low.

Admittedly im not the most educated on the subject.

That's an interesting question, I used to combine MDMA and meth (and often with LSD thrown into the mix) in fairly liberal quantities, and my heart came out none the worse for wear, are piperazines that much worse than amphetamines when combined with MDMA? What makes them that way?

Either way piperazines are filthy chemicals and need to be taken off the streets sooner rather than later, it's just hard to think of any reasonable way to do it unless someone invents a kit that tests for them.

If i were to go to my dealer and he offered me those, i would be fuck that... They look dodgy as..

If i remember.. the enzyme CYP2D6 is responsible for breaking down both MDMA and BZP, when you take the two together they both inhibit the same enzyme from breaking down both, as a result your body cant handle been intoxicated for such a period of time..

^^^^

Yep I added that to my my bzp thread ...

serotonin syndrome will kill you ....

taking pills these days is scary ... I have not had a pill since new years 7 months ago ... been given pills but refused because I taste tested them and some I have seen on here and pillreports saying they are bzp shit ... :(

Very impressed that the content and the pill id were published. Finally, some useful information in a timely manner from the police. This should be standard practice and it is commendable.

I'm not a pill user, but just wanted to say thanks to kingpin007. Consistent quality contribution like this deserves the credit! :)

Now imagine what they could do if they tested every single seized batch and released the results to the public...

I have taken pills I know to be BZP and MDMA together before, definately won't do it again. However I found that the side effects of the BZP were much less once I had taken the MDMA. The BZP has fucked up side effects.

Also, the last few pills I have tested over the past month or so have always tested up MDxx. White hearts, white smiles, shaped hearts, and next week I believe he'll have the white mickey mouses.

Definately MDxx goin round, just gotta look harder!

Just because they test positive for MDxx doesn't mean they don't have pipes in them as well. The pill in the original news article would have just tested for MDxx if you'd used one of the normal test kits, because they don't test for piperazines.

You're still better off testing, but it doesn't make you immune.

Yeah but the feeling of BZP + MDMA is very different from MDMA alone. However in that case, it may be a bit late by the time you realise it also has BZP in it.

I know a lot of people that have taken BZP + MDMA pills on the same night, some in ridiculous amounts, so I must ask, is it really that dangerous or just a bit of a scare? Two people have died. Thats not a large number considering the amount that take it.

I don't think it's going to kill every other person who does it,but I imagine the risk is substantially higher, nevermind that pipes are just plain nasty chemicals.

God what happened to the good old days of MDxx high and maybe a little speed for good measure.
