NEWS: 01/11/10 - Mother and son held in $400m drug bust

A mother and son have been arrested after Australia's fifth-largest drug seizure.

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) say 168kg of heroin - with a potential street value of more than $400 million - was discovered in Sydney in a shipping container sent from Malaysia.

A 55-year-old Campsie woman and her 28-year-old son have been arrested along with a 33-year-old Hong Kong national.

The mother is due to appear at Sydney's Central Local Court on Monday.

AFP Commander David Stewart said the heroin was found in a container of wooden doors.

'This importation is the fifth largest in Australian history and has saved the community $48.7 million in associated health and social costs,' he told reporters.

Once the heroin had been cut, it would be worth upwards of $410 million on the street, he said.

The drug was discovered by Customs and Border Protection Officers who x-rayed 295 doors and found 24 packages of white powder inside the cavities of nine of them.

Seems Australia is being targeted alot more by cartels dealing with heroin and coke.
 
^Thats it man fo every 1kg that stop, 10kg would be getting through..

It's funny you watch border security(the tv show) and you see the customs officer finding 400 grams of cocaine and acting like he's made this big impact on the cocaine trade in oz.

Silly customs officers. I had one demand i take my passport out of my mouth the other day on re-entry in to aus...

I changed lines and told him where to stick it. Bloody power trippers.. It was in my mouth for like 2 seconds while i rifled through my bag looking for my boarding pass.

My thoughts exactly, like I said Australia seems to be being targeted more by drug cartels. It's an indication of something far greater going on.

I dunno how big the Heroin trade is (seriously like no idea, as I don't use neither do any of my friends) But 400 million is a fucking lot and I think it'd be ludacris to think that these guys aren't seriousy players. I mean how much do you think Carl Williams was worth when he was meant to be a kingpin?

I don't think it's gonna have a huge impact, but 5th largest in Australian history... It's alot of fucking heroin. Fortunately not my drug of choice, come on MDMA it's your time to shine haha.

168kg worth 400 million? Not in the states. It's worth alot but not close to that.

Heroin sells for significantly more in Aus than it does in the states.

I'm not sure about the $400m number though, the media here definitely aren't above inflating the supposed value of drug busts.
 
Everything here costs way more then it does in the states, checkout the old price thread, it's a bit outdated but I'm sure you'll see we spend a pretty penny more then you do on that side of the world.
 
Not to get off topic but what kind of government does Australia have? Like here in the states we have a democracy that is actually nothing but a capitalist republic. Those with the money hand pick our leaders. It's all about who gets the most funding during the election. Then they repay their contributors while in office making laws and agendas to benefit them and not the people they serve.

We in the states treat drug addiction as a crime not a disease. Is it the same way there?

A Police officer said on the news last night that it could possibly be cut to make up to that amount.
 
Might not put a big dent in the heroin trade but its still a significant amount. I wouldnt say that lots of very large amounts are flowing through like previously. Prices seem to be at an all time high which to me indicates there is a high demand for the product. Never had a problem with drought but can see that it has been stepped on a fair amount which again tells it all.

If our country would be flooded itd be cheap as chips just like in America or elsewhere. Pills for example cost the price of a cheeseburger in Europe. Our customs are doin a "good job" stopping all the illicit shit being imported. For the better? who knows
