I saw on CNN that new Zealand is going to legalize certain rec. drugs and have them manufactured according to FDA'like standards for human consumption for ppl over 21 years of age. It is a response to the failed drug war and all of the deaths and toxification resulting from dirty RC's coming into the country and causing problems.

In the same article it also discussed how the UN has admitted for the first time that their strategy on the war on drugs is a failure....but as a response they will just do more of the same but harder....more enforecmant stricter penalties etc....if its not working, do it more is their motto I guess.

"Under the proposed laws... manufacturers will be able to sell any currently unregulated psychoactive substance if they can demonstrate it has a "low risk of harm". "

But then...

"Cannabis will continue to be banned, but a synthetic cannabis could potentially be legalised. "You have to start somewhere – may as well start with synthetic drugs," says Wodak"

Their logic on cannabis is a bit strange but this is a step towards a better step. Beats the DEA seizing merchandise as 'drug analogues' from stores that are not even involved in illegal activity like USA has these days.

Are they insane? Cannabis is far more researched than synthetic cannabs.

Cannabis is also covered by the UN 1971 single convention on narcotic drugs

Scientifically it makes no sense but politically nobody should be surprised that cannabis is off the cards for this one.

Seems like big pharma and crime gangs are the big winners here, personal growers still lose out.
Surely, any sane policy should start with the right to grow plants in your home.

Oh well, a start of sorts I suppose.
