New Zealand to ban cigarettes for future generations

New Zealand will ban the sale of tobacco to its next generation, in a bid to eventually phase out smoking.
Anyone born after 2008 will not be able to buy cigarettes or tobacco products in their lifetime, under a law expected to be enacted next year.
"We want to make sure young people never start smoking," Health Minister Dr Ayesha Verall said.
The move is part of a sweeping crackdown on smoking announced by New Zealand's health ministry on Thursday.
Doctors and other health experts in the country have welcomed the "world-leading" reforms, which will reduce access to tobacco and restrict nicotine levels in cigarettes.
"It will help people quit or switch to less harmful products, and make it much less likely that young people get addicted to nicotine," said Prof Janet Hook from the University of Otago.

The crackdown has been met with mixed reactions.

This is the stupidest law enacted in years. Things will work exactly as they do with alcohol: Kids will just have their siblings/parents/random guy in a parking lot buy it for them. Except that (if this somehow isn't repealed) in a decade we'll have people in their 20s still having to do that shit.

Personally, I think that nicotine is a pretty stupid drug. But people need to have the right to do whatever they want with their bodies.

Who the fuck thought that this was a good idea?

EDIT: Vaping will still be allowed as a "safer option" as if most of the younger Gen Zers and 90% of generation alpha won't be picking vaping > tobacco anyways.

Quite funny actually. One of the unintended consequences of COVID: when we were locked down full on the sale of cigarettes was also banned. End result: you could buy cheap cigarettes (at inflated prices) on the black market. Wasn't long before I discovered a particular brand that were the same, if not better, than the brand name shit that I've been smoking for most of my entire life. So now that's all I smoke and at half the price of the brand name cigarettes. Suits me. Were it not for the ban I'd never ever have tried the el cheapo cigarettes.

they will also be only selling very low nicotine content ciggies aswell. its completly fucked. i mean a pack of legal ciggies costs over $40 fucking dollars for 20 of them anyway. I dunno with some of these politicians. Didn't I just hear yesterday that the American Administration wants to or has spiked the tax on vaping products? Clever move. So apparently it'll be cheaper to buy cigarettes than vape. Kinda defeating the object no?

People will still find tobacco and cigarrettes to smoke. im a non smoker and i think its kind of shit that peoples rights to smoke overtake peoples rights to open their window in their own home in the middle of a heatwave without 2 cigs blowing straight in or the ash finding its way to my curtains and melting them/ nearly catching fire. I hate cigs tbh they represent why i didnt eat as a child as all money was spent on those shitty things
 
I think this has a chance of not being a complete disaster only to the extent that e-cigarettes/vaping devices continue to be allowed without severe restrictions on nicotine content.

Polish shops near me you can buy 2 fags for a quid some other places do 2 for 50p and £5 for a full pack

I've always been a very light smoked even though I've been smoking for over 8 years I literally have 2-4 fags a day sometimes 5 if I need an extra nod at night time I'm a fucking lightweight

Thank God we have conservative republican politicians....they are so progressive on drug policy.

In the states the entire conservative South has legal weed. Us socialists in CA and Oregon can't have any drugs (except that all drugs up to the hardest like heroin have been fully decriminalized in Oregon and removed from felony penalty in CA).

This is satire btw just spelling it out if you're so fried that you believe the leftwing is the anti drug and right wing is prodecriminalization.

In right wing run hell holes in America there's ppl doing 5 or 10 years for a few grams of weed.

personally, i see this as backfiring. i think the black market cigs will pop up for sale but of course with no tax revenue or govt warning labels like the legal ones. just my prediction...
