I used to enjoy the piss up / drug up, but it's a bit of a non-event, isn't it?
Ten to eleven days after the solstice, no astronomical events; all just based on Julius Caesar's politics and his obsession with Janus.
Wouldn't you prefer to be celebrating on the 25th of March when the world is coming to life again? It was good for us until 1752. Why can't we bring back a real old British / Irish tradition rather than obsessing over boat people? Or saints that weren't even born when the country existed?
The Scots can keep Hogmanay if they wish.
