Archimedes Pharma Announces Scottish Medicines Consortium Decision to Approve PecFent(R) for use on the NHS in Scotland
READING, England, January 17, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Archimedes Pharma Ltd., a leading international specialty pharma company, today announced the decision by the Scottish Medicines Consortium (SMC) to accept PecFent(R) (fentanyl pectin nasal spray) for use within NHS Scotland. PecFent is indicated for the treatment of breakthrough pain in adults who are already receiving maintenance opioid therapy for chronic cancer pain. Following the SMC clinical effectiveness and health economic review of the product, PecFent has been accepted for use in Scotland for breakthrough cancer pain (BTCP) patients unsuitable for short-acting oral opioids or as an alternative to other fentanyl preparations.
Jeffrey H. Buchalter, President and Chief Executive Officer of Archimedes Pharma, commented: "This is a key outcome from one of Europe's foremost Health Technology Assessment agencies. The SMC's balanced review of PecFent's clinical effectiveness and health economic value supports Archimedes' belief that PecFent provides a real opportunity for patients, for healthcare professionals, and for payors to improve the management of breakthrough cancer pain and the cost effectiveness of that management. We welcome the decision by the SMC to accept PecFent for use within the NHS in Scotland."
Professor Marie Fallon, Edinburgh Cancer Research Centre, commented: "BTCP is a challenge for current treatment options as it can be so rapid in onset, of short duration and severe to excruciating in intensity. The launch of PecFent was long awaited and I am very pleased PecFent will be available in Scotland to provide another important treatment option for patients with this challenging condition. This option is definitely an advance in the delivery of breakthrough cancer pain relief."
Breakthrough cancer pain (BTCP) affects 24% to 95% (average across all studies 62%) of all cancer patients with pain and is characterized by sudden, often unpredictable, episodes of intense pain that occur despite background pain medication. BTCP is rapid in onset, usually reaching maximum intensity in five minutes and lasting for 30 to 60 minutes. BTCP has a significant and often severe impact on patient's lives negatively impacting function, mode, and quality of life.[ii],[iii]
PecFent contains fentanyl, a highly potent opioid analgesic, and uses the Archimedes Pharma nasal drug delivery system PecSys(R) to deliver fentanyl in a rapid but controlled manner, designed to help match the time course of the typical breakthrough pain episode. In two randomised, controlled, double blind, phase 3 clinical trials, PecFent demonstrated evidence of onset of pain relief as early as 5 minutes, as well as clinically meaningful pain relief from 10 minutes.[iv],[v],[vi]

^loooooooonng looooooong dreams that never end if used improperly

if we thought Benzedrine inhalers caused a problem because people learned how to abuse them, what's gonna happen when people start squirting bottles of this stuff on glass and evaporating the solvent?

When something is approved for breakthrough cancer pain in the UK, you actually have to have cancer to get it. The supply is going to be very limited; I wouldn't worry about an epidemic.

^^^^^^^^

Don't you know these junkies will stop at nothing? Already, the desperate drought victims are chain smoking, ingesting every E-number they can find and tearing apart derelict buildings to hug any lingering asbestos. Oncology departments await the deluge.

You could of course give legal heroin. Half Drug Treatment costs and prison numbers in one swoop. Naw, that's too sensible, will never get past the vested interests and their political placemen. There's a school of thought that believes organised crime better occupied killing junkies than intruding on decent people such as workers in the banks they'll have to rob if the heroin millions dry up.

Madness. Brainwashed madness.

I for one have had way to many friends die from fent. I hope this doesnt flood the market and is only scribed at extreme case's becuase docters here in the states or at least in washington seems to be handing out fent. patches like its free candy....

The UK seems to be abit better at handling this shit then the US and Canada as in them seem to have tighter regs so i dunno. Then again they did have Diconal over there and that created abit of a epidemic back in it's day.

I wouldnt mind this drug for the breakthrough nerve pain i get that i know. I don't find fent to be euphoric at all really and i only made the mistake of abusing it a few times other then that i took it as prescribed.

Aww this is good news! :)
As long as it's properly controlled so that patients don't end up ODing left, right and center, this will really help people with Cancer-based Pain.

check this one out, its called taifun and its a fent inhaler for breakthrough pain.

reminds me of that theatre seige a few years back when the russians gassed a bunch of terrorists with some kind of fent analogue gas. it was so strong that ppl needed to be hit with narcan repeatedly. i wonder if you could take the fent out of the inhaler and inject it? tho i could see it being treated with something to help disperse it better.
