new study concludes: pot definitely messes up memory and learning skills

"These people can have trouble learning new things and they are going to have trouble remembering things," he said.

This is incredible, earth-shaking news!! These scientists are truly on the forefront of their particular disciplines..

Hence why I stopped being a persistent heavy user when I was 19

This isn't relevant to anything at all. People can't learn things when they're drunk, but 99% of people aren't drunk when they're trying to learn, now are they? Why would cannabis be any different?

I smoke weed every day and have to remember all kinds of numbers at my job.

you gotta figure people who volunteer for weed studies would more often than not fit the steroetypical stoner mold.

so I say this study is about as useful as a poopy flavored lollipop

not to mention if weed damages your memory than xanax rapes, pillages, and sells it into slavery

i got my degree while smoking copious amounts of cannabis every single day, pretty sure there are millions of others who did the same. Study needs to be replicated many times over for this to be proof of anything. I've now quit cannabis for over 3 months and my memory/cognitive performance is about the same. I agree with shimazu.

This. I got my undergrad degree while being permanently under the influence of drugs, and taking a break from drugs afterwards has not changed a thing in my memory/cognitive performance. I started my masters without drugs but finished it while taking various drugs daily...

I wrote much of my PhD dissertation while under the influence of cannabis.
It might be detrimental to memory, but it also enhances creativity, and helped me make connections and find patterns.
Did someone out there expect that cannabis only does good things?
Is the fact that it has both positive and negative effects relevant to the question of whether it should be legal?

they don't tend to call side effects from pharmaceuticals "damage." i guess the word is justifiable since they proved the earlier daily use starts, the worse it is.

i'll take the short term memory hit, because my brain connects to itself like a supercomputer on this plant. it's like programming- and writing- juice.

Same here. Including a programming degree about 17 years ago. In fact one night in the lab, the last night before a project was due, there were 9 people struggling to find the last bit of code to get the project to work. 9 sad faces worrying about failure at 10:30 at night and we only had till 11:00 in the lab. At 10:30 I went out to my car and toked. Sitting there something came to me, because I realized the answer exists and has to be allowed in through the crack of least resistance. Trying too hard is resistance. As I was toking something came to mind, a light went on and I went back to the lab and tried it. It worked. People found out because I was like YES! People wanted to copy my bit of code (and yes i let them because anyone left was truly intelligent anyway) So people come to my desk and jot down the code, go back to their desk to watch it work. One straight nerd is copying it down and says out loud "you reak like pot". I said yes I smoke a lot, do you want the code or not? He begrudgingly copied the code and his project worked. I was top in the class, and this guy was second and didn't like that a pot head figured out code while he was stoned and he didn't. (arrogant f*ck!) So I did rub it in.

Many many many people I know went to Universities and were honor students as well as pot heads.

This study doesn't account for the people in which pot helps them to learn. So this study can go you know where! I have seen the exact opposite effect on myself and others.

Yeah, I got through medical school as a stoner. As long as I wasn't at the peak of my high while the professor was firing loads of important facts at me, I didn't find it detrimental. In short, there's a cost, but I found it very affordable.

I found the 2~3 days after a drunken binge, benzos, and the comedown from Adderall could take far worse tolls on my ability to learn.

personally, i never took a shine to the old grenola, but i posted this simply because it is DitM and makes some strong, albeit commonly held, assertions.

I think the truth here lies in the lifestyle that some people who are potheads lead. I DON'T think that pot causes this. I am not trying to judge here but if whether or not you smoke tons of pot, if you don't use your brain, of course you will have memory loss. If someone smokes a lot but keeps that motivation up and studies a lot, then I don't feel like you can blame marijuana for causing their inabilities as obviously a lot of people that have responded to this thread are successful, even when smoking copious amounts of pot.

I talked to a buddy that use to be a hardcore addict to various drugs. He talked about how he didn't use his brain. He is now highly educated and successful. He simply said to me "use it or you'll lose it." because I had asked how I could improve my own cognitive function. I think that same thing applies here. If you smoke and then vegetate on the couch or whatever, the results are going to be same with or without pot.
