Tanned skin grays and peels back
meat-red blossom of brittle, bleached bone
pretty, treated hair pales, tangles into a rat's nest, falls away
so much for beauty everlasting

eyes shrivel at the center of deepening craters
lips part, then dry and recede
sunken cheeks meet at their backsides
no artificial odors can defeat this sweet decay

so much for beauty everlasting
decent into a bout of lonely, listless wandering
then back to another belly
retreats a calloused soul

we all bear the agony
so we shrink from the memory
going on to chasing fictitious immutability
when enveloped in new skin.
