New organisation: The Psychedelic Society + launch event with Prof David Nutt

Hi all,

The Psychedelic Society is a new (UK) organisation aiming to connect those interested in psychedelics; encourage public understanding of the benefits and responsible use of psychedelic substances; and lobby for their reasonable and effective regulation.

The launch event will take place on Mon 3rd November with contributions from Prof David Nutt, David Babbs (executive director of 38 Degrees) and Arielle Nylander (Welfare Enough festival support). Full details are below, hope some of you can make it

Psychedelic drugs have fascinated and delighted humans for thousands of years. Studies indicate that they can leave people calmer, happier, kinder and more open-minded, and they are being investigated as a treatment for a range of psychiatric illnesses.

Although the authorities continue to attempt to prevent their use, there are signs that the time may be right to push for their legalisation.

At this event, we will investigate the benefits of psychedelics, the arguments for legalisation and ask: how can we mainstream psychedelics? What are our strongest arguments, and the current political opportunities? Can we learn from other liberation movements? What's our vision of a 'psychedelic society'?

Looks like an interesting society. Of course it won't get far with advocating legalisation in the UK. The powers that be have shown no sign of being open to suggestions about loosening up legislation. They add new compounds to the banned list almost as soon as they are introduced. You need to move to Spain if you want a rational approach to drug control. It may be a good topic for discussion, but in the UK that's as far as it will ever go. I'm actually amazed that they still allow the sale of Cannabis seeds.
