Hi..I am new to Bluelight. Need some suggestion on how to deal with a spouse who is addicted to opiates. He has been taking this now for almost 10 years due to a spinal injury. There are times when I think he is ok and then other times he is just off the hook. Does not care about his surrounding, hygiene and just does what he wants. Our house is just a mess with all his hobbies and its like taking care of a child not a husband. The worst part is that I think I am his biggest enabler. Just don't know what to do or how to get through to him. We talk and talk..but nothing gets done. It's a vicious circle every month. It's affecting my health. Any suggestions....please!

Hi,
Welcome to BL ! :)
Good questions! Has he expressed a desire to get help? It seems like he is at, or nearing a bottom if the discussion is happening. I've been on both sides and there is nothing you can do but help yourself, and … as you say not enable him. When one is addicted in the house it becomes the central organizing principle in the environment and effects everyone involved. It's very difficult to live with someone who is in the place you describe and stops caring.

I've been on opiates before (clean now), and currently live with a roommate that is going through it. I've had to detach myself completely from him for peace of mind. I would check out recovery support below in the Dark Side area for support if possible. Good to have you here!
