I am a 63 year old male diagnosed and disabled due to peripheral neuropathy. My healthcare provider is the V.A. (Veterans Administration). They give me pills without any description or warnings other than "Do not operate heavy machinery while taking this drug" My goal is to find out what these pills do for me and in which case should I dial 911 if I double dose. I would not purposely take more than I was prescribed.

I take, with prescription, 3000mg of Neurontin, 30mg of Vicodin and 30mg MorphineSA for Peripheral Neuropathy, which is progressive, and sciatica. I also take 1mg of Ropinerol for RLS and 20mg of Baclofen, muscle relaxer, at bedtime. My healthcare provider is the Veterans Administration. My concern is that I might overdose by accidentally taking more of these drugs as they seem to affect my memory. I often can't remember whether I have taken the prescribed dose or not. At this point if I can't remember, I don't take anything for fear of overdose, unless the pain gets intense, then I will take just half of what I am supposed to. The Ropinerol and Baclofen aren't an issue as I take them right before bed. I know Morphine and Vicodin can cause problems but what about the Neurontin? Does anyone know how much would be too much? Would it cause death or perhaps turn me into a vegetable? No desire to die here which is why I am asking these questions. Thanks very much for your help.

^^

You need to get one of those pill calendar boxes then. They have little compartments with the days of the week, and you pre-fill them with the pills with the exact dosages you need for each day. That way you don't have to worry about missing doses, or taking the wrong dose, etc. You can buy them at the pharmacy for cheap.

They look like this.

Excellent idea! Thanks very much. I guess more than my memory has been affected. Do you know anything about the Neurontin? Like long term affect or possible overdose?

Glad I could help.

Gabapentin (Neurontin) is a fairly harmless drug. There really aren't many long term effects from it. It's not very recreational at all, either, so it's not commonly abused. It is sometimes helpful in opiate detox as well.

Check out the megathread we have on Gabapentin. Gabapentin Megathread FAQ . Also use the search engine. There are a bunch of threads on it.

Feel free to post some questions about it in Basic Drug Discussion or Other Drugs if you still have questions after using the search.

Baclofen can be quite a dangerous drug - the liver should be checked regularly when taking this medication.

I've been on the same cocktail as you and often used to forget and dose multiple times, which nearly killed me.

Get a diary and write down what you take and when and any side effects, straight away.

Morphine is a habit forming drug and over time, bigger doses are needed for pain and due to tolerance. See my thread for more info. I'll try to write more later.
