Hello all!

I have degenerative discs and bulging (herniated) discs.

I've been on morphine ER 30mg 3x a day and 10mg Percocet 2x a day for months. I'm not getting any relief. So my pain Dr tried switching the Percocet to 2mg dilaudid 3-4 times a day. But I might as well have been taking vitamin C, it did, or I felt, nothing. He told me dilaudid was a strong drug, but I literally got no relief. (I didn't even feel it, in a "buzz" type of way.

So now I'm doing the 3 30mgs of the ER and on top 4 times a day taking 15mgs of morphine IR. Again, no relief, plus I don't feel like I'm taking ANYTHING.

I believe my tolerance has built up, but I need help. I don't know if he is just not giving me meds that will help, or what. He is constantly telling me I'm on a VERY high dose. But I know morphine comes in 15, 30, 60, and 100. So I don't understand how my dose is "so very high".

I don't like the idea of my pain med and my breakthrough pain med being the same medicine. It seems like it wouldn't help.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Better medicine to request? Should I switch Dr's? I need advice.

Unfortunately I can't help you with your questions, but I can give the advice, that people how can probably won't see your post here.

Yeah, your doctor is sort of correct that it's a 'high dose', for someone without any tolerance and limited pain anyway.. on the other hand the first time I did dilaudid I injected an 8 mg pill and caught a good nod but at the time I wasnt really in much pain and my tolerance was pretty low as well, I wasn't strung out on anything at the time, had only been recreationally using scramble heroin (pretty low purity) for a little under a year (and not daily). I was also 14 and while I was 5'7 at the time I was probably only 120 lbs. So this should give you an idea of about how useful a 2 mg dilaudid should be to an adult in severe pain with a moderate tolerance and taking it orally. Not very useful at all. I definitely wouldn't suggest injection, while it will help you feel it more intensely there is a major stigma surrounding it and it'll destroy your veins quickly especially using pills. There's also a drug (I'm pretty sure I know the name but I'm going to look it up first to verify I don't give you bad info) that isn't a painkiller but it strengthens the effects of the opioid painkillers that you are taking. The way I see it you have a few options available to you: you could ask your doctor to increase your dose, look for a new doctor, or illegally obtain extra meds. Obviously this last option would be last resort if at all. Do some research online, you could even look into pain management clinics. Get some second opinions before you make your final decision.
