The state is working to pull the bubble gum flavor of "Smacked!" from stores after at least 44 people have overdosed on the brand of synthetic marijuana. The man-made product is legally sold as potpourri, but many users smoke it because it mimics the effects of pot.
New Hampshire is reporting a high number of fake pot overdoses.
Gov. Maggie Hassan declared a state of emergency after at least 44 people overdosed on the bubble gum flavor of "Smacked!" this week.
The man-made product is engineered to mimic marijuana, but it is legal to sell as potpourri. Gas stations and convenience stores typically sell the synthetic cannabis.
Since Monday, 41 people have overdosed in Manchester, and 20 of them have been hospitalized, Gov. Hassan said in a statement. Another three people have overdosed in Concord.
No one has died from an overdose.
"These products pose a serious threat to public health, especially to young people," Hassan said.
