New Dilaudid causing weird side effects

I've been on hydromorphone for over 6 years. I'm prescribed both injections and tablets, which I convert to injections 50% of the time. I'm aware this is not the best practice but I use wheel filters and water designed for injections.

I got my script filled for tablets today and took one orally immediately as I was in a lot of pain. By the time I got home, a 45 minute drive, I started breaking out and just generally felt not so hot. I attributed it to the lunch I'd had earlier - Mexican fare at a restaurant I had never frequented before. However when it was time for next dose- same thing happened, although not as bad rash wise. I then tried injection. I did not get a rash, but I also did not feel anything, which was very unusual.

I checked the Med and realized it was a brand I had never heard of or had before. It is Aurolife Pharmaceuticals, 8 mg hydromorphone hcl. Has anyone had any experience with this Med? I can't find anything except perhaps it was just introduced in the US. I'm in a huge dilemma. I can't stop taking it because I will go into withdrawal. It will take a few more days to get a new script from my dr as she lives a few hundred miles away, 3 day mail time. Even then, I'm not sure what to say. Aren't all dilaudid tabs the exact same? I will sound like a nut! More so than usual:) I would love some advice, experience reports with this Med, anything! Thanks so much and I'm sorry the post was so long.

Response to Aurolife generic

Greetings Hydroluv,
In this area I do not believe you are a NUT or sound like a NUT, although some will say you are. I know it has been a few months since you have posted and would like an update. I just got my hydro's filled and realized they used 3 different brands to fill my script. The U 45's were part of the fill. I take them on and in the same manner as you. I didn't realize they were different brands until after I took my first dose, but the next dose I will try the U 45's and let you know. I know there are a ton of articles and a ton or two of "people" in forum's on many other sites that are adament about all pills functioning the same whether generic or brand name and the only difference is the fillers. I strongly disagree. I have been on pain meds for about 18 years for chronic pain and to me, my opinion, (and there will be people to chime in and say i'm wrong and it is psychosomatic but i know my body). Don't get me wrong but there are some companies that make excellent generics and they perform as they should but some are subpar. For instance, Malinkrodt pharmaceuticals are CRAP whether it is oxycodone or hydromorphone. I don't take them for the hit, I take them for relief and being able to function ut for Mals I had to take 2 pills do what 1 pill should. Purdue so far has been the best. I now have purdue, aurolife (U 45) and lannett (LCI 1354). It will be a few hours til next dose but i will respond. If you see this post I would like to know your outcome after taking it a few times. Til next time....

Nobody here thinks that you're crazy man. I've injected Hydromorphone tablets countless times. The fact is, that even with the utmost observance of the principles of Harm Reduction, it is not a "safe" practice.

You do not have many options in this scenario. I'm not making accusations at all, but we can't provide advice for how to acquire different pills from providers and such, although I understand the dilemma that you are in. It's okay though and the world is not ending. You have, at most, a few days of moderate withdrawal ahead of you while you figure out a permanent solution to the problem.

I'm by no means trying to minimize your problem OP, but you don't even have to go the route of zero Opioids in the body, which is quite a bit different from even a sharp reduction in daily dosage. You can do it!

I have cancer and have been on dilaudid for over 5 years...I used to get the 8mg triangle pills with the 8 on one side and the 2 p's on the other...all of a sudden approx 6 months ago they changed my prescription to aurolife ...they gave me no relief my Dr raised me to 12mg and now I am getting 4mg and 8mg again from aurolife ...when I took one 8mg purdue I would usually get relief for about 3 hours now the pain is unbearable. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do because my pain is just not going away with this brand I don't get how the fda approved this company there is seriously something wrong here...If anyone else is having the same issues please reply and tell me what else to do...thank u all

I think you should be able to request brand name only? If you tell your pharmacy beforehand, you can have them order you a different brand.
