'Dusting' Gives Teens Cheap High
Young People Inhaling Compressed Air

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- A common cleaning product has become the inhalant of choice for a growing number of teens.

Teens once inhaled nitrous oxide from cans of whipped cream, but now many are inhaling compressed air from cans of computer dusting products and the results can be deadly.

The practice is called "dusting."

Ben Goudberg, 15, of Roseville, said he tried it once and regretted it.

"I couldn't move for three to four minutes. I was staring at the door thinking I wanted to get up and touch it, but I couldn't do anything. It was one of the scariest feelings in the world," Goudberg said.

Goudberg survived his "dusting" experience, but his brother did not.

Last summer, 17-year-old Nicolas Goudberg and two other Jesuit High School students were killed in a car crash. A can of compressed air was found inside the vehicle and authorities said a chemical consistent with the computer cleaner "Dust Off" was found in the bloodstream of one of the teens.

"There's a likelihood because a can was found empty that they all had been sharing or had been using prior," Goudberg's father, Frits Goudberg, said.

Jon Daily, a drug counselor with New Directions in Sacramento, said he's treated a few dusting addicts.

"This is the inhalant of choice for young people nowadays," Daily said. "I had a kid who had been using it and had repeated nose bleeds. He had to see his doctor and get part of his nose cauterized."

Inhaling the chemicals can give a feeling of euphoria for a few minutes.

In some cases it can result in paralysis, slurred speech, a staggered walk, permanent brain damage, and even death.

Experts said teens like it because it's cheap, easy to buy and hard to detect.

"No smell ... no trail ... no ashes," Ben Goudberg said.

To combat the problem, retailers such as Wal-Mart, Office Depot and Staples have made it more difficult for teens to get their hands on compressed air products. At Staples, customers must be at least 18 to purchase Dust Off or similar products.

Falcon, the maker of Dust Off, is also taking action by placing warning labels on the top if its cans.

"Clearly the stores and the manufacture of this product know it's a product that's being abused by young people today," Daily said.

It is estimated that as many as 150 American teens and young adults die each use from abusing aerosol inhalants.

It seems American teens are not the only ones getting hooked on dusting. British scientists are currently experimenting with adding bittering chemicals to aerosols and compressed air products, as well as to glue, paint and gasoline.

"Dustbunniers. Eventually they get tired of it."

Yeah if they don die first :)

Stupid kids, why dont they just get som weed, swchag or whatever...

i dont get it tho those chemicals are incredibly bad for ur entire body n each use completely fucks u up y not get a safer drug like marijuana "teens like it because its cheap and simple" more like"teens are so misinformed about drugs by schools and the media they'll try anything"
cuz when that first pill felt good and didnt kill u ya gunna start thinkn ya invincible

One night I was coming off some strong MDA and I wasnt really thinking straight so I decided to inhale this stuff (several times). Its pretty powerful- it had me thinking I was a fish and my friend had to catch me at a specific time in a specific place (???). I woke up from that hallucination with 3 of my friends holding me back because I almost stumbled into a campfire (we were in the woods camping). I have to say it was a lot of fun but after coming off it, I never wanted to touch the stuff again. As soon as I stopped I got the worst headache and felt quite retarded. The sight of a dustoff bottle now makes me sick. Dont do this

Haha, I saw thirteen. Arent they inhaling duster and smacking each other as hard as they can in the opening of th movie?

^ Yeh. This is really sad, it's because of drug prohibition shit like this happens.

I did that once in gym class in high school. it was fun for a few minutes, got the "wa-wa's" but not worth the risk.

ok lets say some young teen who only knows about drugs from what he learned in DARE reads this article. this is what he will remember

...in some cases, well that wont happen to me. you can get high off of this stuff? you can buy it where? at walmart? at staples? awesome...

heres what they should tell them: duster contains compounds which cut off oxygen supply to the brain. there is no pyscoactive ingrediant and it is equivalent to choking yourself.

the funny thing is, many kids will use duster to get a high, but refuse to smoke weed as an alternative because they have been told it is far worse.

now im in favor of being non-judgemental about most drugs, the user is usually to blame, but duster is not a drug. it is just an unhealthy aerosol solution. get some nitrous for christs' sake :D

Getting dusted is fun maybe once a month or something, but not to do it at all more than once a week.

It is the drivers fault for dying. I do not even know how stupid you have to be to huff that stuff driving, it's his own fault. It is not a new craze what so ever, people know how stupid it makes you and once you take maybe 2 big huffs you can't take anymore because your to dizzy or you'll throw up.

You can move around, very slow, and it's not scary at all. In fact the few times I did it I couldn't not stop smiling.

All of these reporters and papers are turning into those dumb black and white magazines that have a head line saying, " Angel Shot Down By lightening".

In fact I think I may do some right now, take that Sacramento and shove it! ;)

I have a question.
My friend likes to do duster, and he compares the high to nitrous.

So can someone explain to me why duster is so bad for your brain while nitrous is apparantly not bad for you if you take the proper precautions?

Is it because duster's only psychoactive effect is caused by cutting off the supply of oxygen to the brain? From what I have read, nitrous's psychoactive effects are not due to lack of oxygen, but if so why would it's effects be similar to duster?

Of course my friend could be full of shit with his comparison. I have never done duster so I can't personally make the same claim that it is similar to nitrous.

it is different. nitrous (N20) stimulates the release of the neurotransmitters that bind to GABA receptors - much the same way ketamine and other dissociatives do. alcohol and benzos work in a similar mechanism. now you can huff nitrous until you pass out and eventually you will have a lack of oxygen in the brain. this is why in the dentists office they give you nitrous for 20 minutes, but dilute it with pure oxygen.

duster just prevents oxygen from leaving the red blood cells into the brain cells. your brain needs oxygen for energy. without energy, brain cells die. the "high" you get from duster is simply "asphyxiation". its like drowning, but it prevents oxygen from getting to your brain much quicker than simply not breathing

Why the fuck would you do this? Good way to make yourself retarded, if that's what you're going for.

This article will inevitably do more harm than good.

Thats a great way to teach kids about drug use. Give them the name of the drug, tell them its cheap, easily accesable and cant be detected and produces a "great" high. Brilliance!!!

Sorry to get off topic, but I thought ketamine and other dissociatives primarily affected NMDA receptors, not GABA. I also thought that the cause of nitrous's effects was more complicated than a simple release of neurotransmitters. If someone could enlighten me or post a link containing relevant info, I would greatly appreciate it, thx:)
